“Yeah and no,” Nate answered. Everywhere has its rough areas, including the so-called city of angels. Nate grew up in the bad areas, making his way to the rich areas when he got older only to con and scam people, sometimes selling drugs in the process. The rich were worse than the poor, mostly because they pretended like they were all perfect. Most of his customers had been socialites and politicians anyways. “It is beautiful for the most part. Just as long as you avoid the rough areas and stay out of trouble,” Nate continued with a shrug, “But here’s different. My home back in L.A. was nothing like it is here. The Desert Willow apartments are quiet, no annoying neighbors. It’s a dream come true. Trust me when I say you aren’t missing out on anything back there.”

“it must be gorgeous over there. but i can definitely understand about the rough parts. everywhere’s got a bad area you want to avoid, i guess,” lola remarked. truthfully, boot hill didn’t really have a bad area. it was almost like the town was stuck in time. nothing seemed to change, for the bad or for the good. lola grinned once she heard nate continue, growing joyful. “you live at the desert willow apartments too? oh, so do i! we’re practically neighbors and didn’t even know about it! this is so cool,” lola replied. it definitely made things more interesting since lola wouldn’t even have to go far if things between them progressed. which a part of lola hoped they would. she hated using the guy but lola was in need of a distraction.

      nothing about the hick rodeo event that had been plastered all over town for the last week appealed to dorian in the slightest. cheap carnival-esque games made to con you out of money ( okay that was up her street ), roller coasters and other corny fair rides, local food trucks charging ridiculous prices, and some kind of beer garden with equally expensive drinks. okay that last one had it’s bonuses, a fresh preying ground for her to work her magic on those gullible local boys and girls out of their hard earned cash. and while she’d been planning on heading in for perhaps an afternoon, closer to evening where the men would be so beyond drunk it’d be easy picking, of course life had to decide to throw a wrench into things.

       she heaves an over the top sigh, teetering into her friend’s personal space with a put upon expression across her face. not quite pouting but so very close, and her tone full of petulant complaint, “ why are we here so early lo’ ? the sun’s still up and my head’s still pounding from my last round at bucking horse from last night. ”    she’s expecting her whine to go without sympathy, and so she sighs again, heavier and with a weight to it, “ you’re lucky you’re so attractive. i’d have abandoned you for bed hours ago. ”

lola wouldn’t say she had forced dorian to go with her to the rodeo for today. but she might have been a tad bit demanding when she asked for dorian to go with her. lola simply wanted her to enjoy the rodeo like she and the countless residents of boot hill had. and if that meant getting up early to where there weren’t that many people, then so be it. “we are here early because this is the best time! there’s hardly people here so we don’t even have to worry about lines. and i brought some water. it usually helps with hangovers,” lola explained. she then chuckled at dorian’s next line, a smile on her face. “uh-huh, sure. don’t act like you didn’t want to join in on the festivities. good looks or not, i still would have made you go with me. aren’t you excited? we can play the games, you’re never too grown up for a friendly game of ring toss. i could win you one of those stuffed animals as a little memento. something for you to remember your first rodeo by,” lola offered.

           while he never draws attention to it, the sudden shift in stature every time someone realizes who exactly it is they’re talking to never fails to amuse him ( can’t help the hastily stifled laugh it brings out of him ). len leans forward, elbows propping up on the table-top as he crosses his arms and aims a languid sort of smile up at lola. her bright attitude and seemingly never ending supply of energy made him a little jealous, though he knew well enough that her work was just as hard as she worked. though lola made it seem effortless, with that sunny smile of hers whenever he happened to drop into the cafe on, or off, shift for a chat,   “ of course, but i hope they’ve got someone helping you out with all this, ‘cause otherwise i might have to lend a hand. can’t have you too rushed off your feet now can we ? ”     it’s mostly said in jest, though he does give a cursory scan of the food truck area for other volunteers, nudging the dog at his feet under the table a little to make sure the pooch hadn’t wandered off to cause chaos that’d come back to bite him on the ass later, before turning back to practically beam at her, easy laugh falling from his lips.   “ god yes - the rodeo’s always been a great time and it certainly hasn’t skimped out this year. you had the chance to check out all the attractions yet ? or have they had you toiling away all this time ? ”

“i did see a little bit of stuff but i've been working here for most of the time. if i don’t get to see everything today because of this, i’ll definitely try again tomorrow. thank goodness the radio lasts for more than a day, right?” lola replied with a chuckle, “but don’t think i’m complaining or anything like that. it’s nice helping out people. and the food truck needed all the help they could get. so as long as it’s for a good cause, i’m fine with it.” despite how a majority of the boot hill residents treated her like crap, she was still eager to get up and help them. no matter how much stuff she had been through, her heart of gold had never been tarnished. sometimes, lola hated how nice she was but there were moments ( moments like these ) where she appreciated it. she then smiled once she noticed the dog near len’s feet, bending down to where she was making eye contact with it. “who’s this fella?” she knew she should probably get back to work but she figured a minute or two more wouldn’t hurt.

He offered her a small smile and a quiet thanks as she put his mug of coffee down in front of him, immediately wrapping his hands around the thing and absorbing the warmth of it as he waited for it to cool. Jake knew just what she meant about the loneliness at work. It was easier in a gym, having to constantly check up on people, but he could only imagine what it would feel like dealing with so many customers every day who never even thought of you as more that waitstaff.

“you know I’d stay here all day for the company if I could,” he shot back with a smile, “I can’t see you being anywhere near an embarrassment, but if you want I could teach you a few things to make sure you wouldn’t hurt yourself in the process? You know the door’s always open.”

“really? you’d do that?” lola asked. she wouldn’t say she was necessarily difficult when it came to working out. she did run a couple times, although it was mostly to the grocery store whenever the chef ran out of something in the back. and cheerleading, she couldn’t forget that one. “ok then, i’d love to. only if you’re ready to deal with me asking a bunch of annoying questions and passing out within the first two minutes,” lola agreed with a chuckle. she figured it wouldn’t hurt to work out. in case any jerks showed up at the cafe, she could at least not be so weak as she usually was.

          “Ah well, it’s good to know you can stick up for yourself, but if you ever do need help telling some idiots to get the hell out, you know where I am, yeah?” Jake didn’t tend to be an aggressive person, in fact he had probably never raised a fist to anyone in his life outside of combat and training, but he was still very aware that he had an imposing frame, and that really did come in handy sometimes… so why not offer a helping hand should it be needed every now and again?

          “Same old, same old,” he said with a shrug, watching her ready the sweet, sweet cup of coffee from across the counter. “Usual crowd’s starting to be the only ones left now that everyone’s starting to forget about their new year resolutions, y’know? Not so great for the business, but means that I don’t have to spend all day coaching. Not that I mind doing it, but it’s nice to be able to run through some serious workouts again now too…”

lola nodded as she finished up his cup, walking over to his table before handing it over towards him. she was never the athletic type, never having properly worked out a day in her life. unless you counted cheerleading and she had only done that for about a year or two. she’s a weakling compared to some of the people who’s walked into iron fitness, jake included. the most she could do if she needed to defend herself was throw her high heels and hope for the best. “i’m sure someone will come along soon enough. believe me, i’d offer but i wouldn’t last five seconds. i might as well save us both the embarrassment. in the mean time, you can hang around here more. not to sound desperate or anything but it does get lonely in here at times,” lola replied with a small smile.

autumn had heard a lot about the setup of the rodeo, what with it largely going back to the church and, therefore, her husband. carol had wanted all of the details on what this year would be like, but carol couldn’t have them !! fuck carol !! the food always seemed to be the part helen was others were most curious about – what would be there this year ?? would it be the same as usual ?? would there be food trucks ?? you know, mandy, sometimes a person just doesn’t get all of the details !! all of that to offer the worst segue possible: ultimately, she was pleased. “ the fries, ” she confirmed, adding a slight nod. it didn’t take a genius to tell that the other wasn’t having the easiest time that night, per se. “ it’s pretty overwhelming here, isn’t it ?? ” – it was as close as she could come to saying ‘ya i get it’ without saying ‘ya i get it’.

“sort of,” lola replied with a shrug, trying to downplay it as more than what it was. truth be told, she was tired. and she was sure she was gonna smell like popcorn and corn dogs for a whole month after this. but one great thing about lola was that she managed to somehow make everything fun. growing up, she’d even make doing chores fun. so this was far from a challenge for her. she was close with gabriel, due to her parents really. so naturally, she was close with autumn and lola definitely appreciated that the woman was concerned about her. “don’t get me started on how pissed people can get when they don’t get their corn dogs on time. it’s insane. but i’ll be fine honestly,” lola assured.

        len’s grateful that the town has been quiet as of late in terms of crime, finally getting to enjoy his absolute favorite part of life in boot hill - the annual rodeo. the perfect opportunity to get out and see folks he wouldn’t normally have the chance to chat to, and give himself a nice break from being hunched over a desk most of the day. the sun’s hot, as always in the middle of arizona, but pleasant enough for february, and the deputy spends the first hour or so wandering the various stalls, taking in the games, the wares up for sale, great dane at his side. eventually, and with no end of effort on scoobert’s part, lennox ends up sitting at one of the many temporary tables in the designated food truck portion of the fair waiting for his order to make it’s way over. it’s nice, surrounded by the sounds of the townsfolk having fun, and he’s so distracted by the whole vibe that he almost misses the question from his left. he startles a little, twisting toward the waitress - ah, lolita, of course - with a small smile of polite confusion on his face, “ definitely not the funnel cake, sorry. but if i’m not jumping the gun and stealing someone else’s order, those fries are mine. ” he half stands, long arm reaching out to help take the plate from her in an effort to lessen her load and stress. “ guess catering to this kind of deal is a lot different from the cafe huh ? ”

lola can’t help but stand up a little straighter when she realizes who it is. lola would be lying if she said she didn’t have a stereotypical schoolgirl crush on the deputy. her secret kink happened to be a man in uniform, after all. and it didn’t help that he was always so nice to her. truthfully, he was nice to everyone but lola did always feel just a little special whenever he stopped by the cafe and they’d talk from time to time. but lola knew better than to go further than that. she didn’t want ruin whatever friendship she had with him anyways. “definitely,” lola replied with a chuckle, “but in a good way, of course. sure, it’s a little hectic out here but it’s nothing i’m not used to. are you having fun out here, by the way?”

This was Valerie’s first rodeo so needless to say, she found herself having a great time. She had been to a carnival maybe once in her life but that was about it. Nothing like what Boot Hill had to offer. Valerie quickly found it dangerous when it came to her sweet tooth, the girl finding herself unable to fight the temptations that came with all the sweets there. So when a blonde waitress offered her either funnel cake or fries, Valerie already knew what the option was. “I was the funnel cake, darling. Can’t seem to stay away from anything sweet even if i tried,” Valerie replied, a chuckle soon following behind it. “I’ve never been to a whole lot of rodeos before if I’m being honest but I didn’t know they usually had waitresses there.”

“i’m with you there,” lola agreed as she handed over the funnel cake over to her, “i’ve got a sweet tooth that’s almost impossible to get over.” she didn’t recognize her before, figuring that she was probably new to town. new people were rare in boot hill but when they did arrive, lola was eager to meet them. she could also hear a slight accent in the woman’s tone. her suspicions were confirmed once more when lola heard the next woman’s statement. “no, not usually. but the food trucks needed a little more help so i volunteered. wasn’t exactly what i had in mind but anything to keep the rodeo going smoothly, right?” lola said with a chuckle.

sophia grinned back and leaned her elbows on the table. “love you, girl,” she sing-songed after the other blonde girl. it was true that it probably hadn’t been that long since they met but in all honesty, it felt like her home in boot hill had been her home all along. it was an odd feeling but one she rarely questioned. “perfect - i am so excited to find out!” sophia called, settling down and rubbing her hands together. if small towns were good for anything, it was…well, interesting stories about their residents.

lola didn’t waste any time placing the order for sophia, making her way back over to the table where she sat across from her. she knew it was wrong to gossip about people behind their backs. but people usually said such venomous things behind her back ( some were bold enough to say it to her face ) so lola honestly didn’t feel too bad afterwards. this town had a history of judging others without looking at themselves. her whole family pretty much grew up that away. “rumor has it that rachel who works over at the florita cantina was stealing from the cash register and everything. it hadn’t been a whole lot. just enough to where she’d be able to do it without getting caught. but she eventually did and you should have seen the look on everyone’s faces,” lola replied. “oh, and you wouldn’t believe who was caught sleeping with the very married arnold baker. the pretty church mouse, tanya reynolds. looks like innocent little tanya isn’t as innocent as everyone thought,” lola added with a chuckle. she found it funny because everyone usually labeled her as the promiscuous one when there were people worse than her.

Nate knows he could be at home, passed out. Or wasting some more time at The Bucking Horse. But he had managed to let Lola convince him into going to some rodeo he didn’t even want to. He wasn’t sure what was going on but the woman was quickly growing on him. He knew it was scary to get attached to someone. But there was something about Lola that made him want to reconsider. 

“Yeah, yeah,” he said playfully while rolling his eyes, looking down once he felt her fingers intertwine with his. He was shocked to say the least. Nate felt a fluttery feeling in his stomach the entire time, mentally scolding himself for it. He sounded like a high school girl for goodness sakes.

Upon hearing Lola continue to whine over some dumb teddy bear, he sighed. He knew he wouldn’t hear the end of it if he said no anyways. “Fine. But only because you promised me free food,” Nate reluctantly agreed. Definitely not because I like you and I’d probably do whatever you asked me anyways. He then made his way over to the game, Nate figuring he’d win this easily. It was a simple game, something he had played before growing up. Much to his amusement, he did end up winning thanks to his one good arm. He then held the ridiculously oversized teddy bear in his hands as he turned to look over at Lola, saying, “I think this is for you.”

lola cheered, watching from the side as nate won the game before helping take down the teddy bear she had wanted. she tried to hide the growing smile on her face but it was hopeless. “oh, thank you!” lola replied as she held up the teddy bear, figuring it’d look perfect amidst the others one she had back at home. she then pulled him in for a hug, showering him with kisses.

“sorry,” lola quickly apologized once she let go of him, “i’m just so happy.”

it was true. out of all the crappy jerks she had dated over the years, being with nate felt different. sure, he was secretive and not nearly as affectionate as lola. but she knew deep down that he was a nice person and lola was determined to bring out that side of him.

“alright, we can do something you’d like now. how about one of the rides then? they’re kinda fun,” lola offered, looking up at nate as she waited for his response.

Juliet was glad that she managed to take the night off to go to the rodeo, even though she’d been here for years, she’d probably only managed to get to the rodeo one other time. After wandering around for a while, trying to take everything in, she had picked a food truck at random, which had seemed less busier than most, but after a few minutes she realised that that wasn’t the case. After she’d ordered she sat down at one of the plastic tables and chairs that had been set up around the lot, watching people as they past by her. She spotted Lola holding her food, and walked closer to the truck “I was the basket of fries.” Juliet said with a smile “Busy tonight isn’t it? I don’t know how you mange to keep up with it all.” 

“i don’t know either,” lola admitted as she handed juliet her fries, “but i’m used to it by now.” the cafe was packed pretty much every day so the rodeo was kind of a breeze compared to what she usually went through. speaking of work, that was how she knew juliet in the first place. but then again, her job was how she met most people. she wasn’t a frequent customer but she stopped by every now and then, chatting in between. “glad to see you could make it, i know how busy your job is and everything. how do you like it at the rodeo so far?

eri had been waiting off to the side for her order, half wondering what was taking so long and half not caring at all. instead of being on her phone ( the thing didn’t work half the time now ), she’d been watching the rodeo unfurl around her. kids ran in all different directions, couples won each other prizes. all of boot hill came out to play, it seemed, and she wasn’t surprised. this was probably the most exciting thing she’d seen since she arrived. “oh!” her attention was brought back to the blonde carrying two plates of wonderfully greasy food. “you think i can have both?” she joked, teasing smile on her lips. “kidding. mine’s the funnel cake. haven’t had one of those in forever.”

lola had seen the cheery girl from time to time, usually stopping by the cafe but they never really talked until now. she giggled once she realized that she had only been joking about taking both orders. “right, i knew that you were joking,” lola said with a small smile, “but here you go. the funnel cake’s my favorite but i know i need to stay away. my sweet tooth’s gonna get me in trouble one day.”

lola had hoped to have a little fun at the rodeo, away from her job. but it appeared as though her responsibilities as a waitress had yet to disappear. one of the food trucks needed a little help passing out food to the long line of customers and being the kind person she was, she immediately offered to volunteer. i already have experience, she had jokingly replied when asked if she was able to do it. surprisingly, it was a lot more fun than it usually was at work. maybe it was due to the cheery atmosphere that came with the rodeo. or lola was probably just overall in a great mood. she was currently holding two orders at once, lola already forgetting which one belonged to who. she smiled when she saw one of the people who had already ordered, making her way towards them. “here’s your funnel cake,” lola replied, “or were you the basket of fries?” she furrowed her brows in confusion, mentally cursing at herself for messing up.

it hadn’t been the easiest thing in the world to convince nate to come with her to the rodeo. it was one of the few fun things that happened in this town so needless to say, lola was practically a regular. it was one of the few times she’d be able to have fun and see people besides work. seeing as nate was new to town, she figured he’d be the perfect person to go with her. lola really liked nate a lot, more than she knew she probably should. and she could only hope he liked her back.

“told you this would be fun,” lola remarked, holding his hand as the two walked side by side, “definitely a nice change from being cooped up in that auto shop all day, huh?”

it was then that she noticed a stuffed teddy bear hanging from one of the carnival games. it was huge and pink and everything lola wanted at that moment. she turned to look at nate, putting on the cutest puppy face she could muster. “can you play that ring toss game over there and win me that teddy bear please? pretty please! i’ll get you free dinner at the cafe for a whole week. forget that, a whole month! please, please, please!” she knew that she sounded like a five year old but she didn’t care. plus, it’d be kind of romantic for nate to get her something. a scene right out of those old rom-coms she adored.

Jake only managed to survive his daily routine with a (not so) healthy stream of caffeine. Back home in England it would have been a cup of instant coffee or some other shitty alternative, but working at Iron Fitness… well it was just easier to pop in next door and grab a freshly brewed cup (especially when Americans apparently despised the idea of an electric kettle). He’d even been doing it so long he had become a fabled regular, something that was easily achievable in a small town like Boot Hill, but he’d only heard about in stories back in London.

          “Alright, love?” He greeted, breaking out into a grin to match her smile. Lola was the waitress Jake had managed to bond with the easiest. She was always quick to smile and looked like she’d never had a bad thought in her life – Jake envied the innocence of her features, but wouldn’t wish any type of hell like he’d been through on her either – “Yes please, if you don’t mind.” It was almost the exact same routine they had every time he walked in, black with one sugar, no fuss about it. It was another charming factor about Boot Hill that made him forget what life had been like in London, how easy everything was.

          “It looks busy in here today,” he said, looking around at the crowded table, “I hope they’re not overworking you, and that everyone’s tipping well.”

all of the times that jake visited the cafe were incredibly pleasant. he was one of the few people who didn’t prove the ‘all men are pigs’ stereotype and she was grateful for it. truthfully, she didn’t know a whole lot about him except that he was kind and loved black coffee. but that was good enough for lola who was always eager to make a new friend. “yeah, it’s usually this busy around this time. it’s a little hectic but nothing i’m not used to already. don’t worry, i’m fine. i know when to put my foot down so there’s no need to stress about that,” lola assured. she may have been sweet but she could stand up for herself when necessarily. there were rarely moments where she’d get out of character and grow upset. but when she did, it wasn’t the prettiest picture. that was why she tried to keep from being angry. she did, however, appreciate jake looking out for her. “what about you? i hope your day’s going a lot better than mine,” lola asked as she prepared his cup of coffee like usual.

lana smiled properly when lola agreed. “that’s great!” most of her current students were just - not interesting to teach. she hated to think it, but even the most intelligent of them lacked even the dullest spark of creativity or independent thinking, and the majority of them spent her lessons dreaming about leaving boot hill or waiting to leave school so they could get a job as a waitress or something else that wouldn’t take them anywhere. lana cringed internally - that was unfair, some people didn’t have a choice. but it broke her heart to see a complete lack of ambition in so many of her students. in all honesty, her offer was made for her own interest, although she did truly want to help in any way she could. 

she accepted the coffee, still deep in thought. “thank you.” the cup was warm, and she clutched it between her hands gratefully. she smiled warmly at the girl. “i’m surprised it’s so quiet in here, at lunchtime? sometimes i can’t get a table later in the day!”

“i know,” lola agreed, “but i’m grateful for the silence. allows me to think properly without someone always calling for my attention.” moments when the schoolhouse cafe was quiet and peaceful were extremely rare but when they were, lola took advantage of it. not by singing and dancing, which she was sure she’d never do again in public, but by simply daydreaming. dreaming of a life different from the one she currently lived. “i, for one, love it. if it was like this all the time, i think i’d be the happiest person in boot hill,” lola admitted.

Drew would like to think he’s good at socializing with others. That he isn’t nearly the social wreck he used to be. He’s made a couple of nice friends in Boot Hill so far and he’s quite happy with them all. It’s given him hope that maybe there is potential for him in this town after all.

As much as he’d love and stay cooped up in this library forever, he knows he needs to get something in his system to keep him going. So he decides to head down to the Schoolhouse Cafe for a little lunch break. It was while walking through the door that he paused, noticing a beautiful woman walking around. It didn’t take long to realize that she worked there, the woman smiling and occasionally talking with other customers.

The last time Drew had ever stared at anyone like that, it had been years ago at a library and the woman had been his ex-wife. Needless to say, he hadn’t been around a lot of women during his marriage and even after it had ended. He froze when he noticed that she had caught him staring and tried to play it off. But managed to trip on his feet and fall to the ground.

He was embarrassed, looking up to see the same waitress from before now standing over him. She wore a small yet amused smile on her face and he sheepishly grinned at her. “Uh, sorry. I’m usually not this clumsy, I swear,” he apologized, still looking at her.

it had been a busy day at the cafe, lola barely able to take a breath without someone asking for a refill or the chef telling her to deliver another order. but despite people pulling at her left and right, the blonde was still in high spirits. she couldn’t let a couple hiccups bring her down. while working, she could feel eyes on her. it had been a man, looking directly at her. confused, she had begun making his way over to him when he tripped and fell on the ground. the woman stifled a giggle a she now looked down at him. a small smile broke out on her face upon hearing his remark. “i sure hope so,” lola replied, “wouldn’t want any more accidents around here. you wouldn’t believe how many spills i’ve had to clean up in the time span of an hour.” she noticed that he was somewhat embarrassed and possibly shy, lola feeling a little bad for him. “are you gonna keep on staring at me all day or order something?” she asked playfully, placing her hands on her hips as she waited for his response.
