sybill couldn’t keep the giggle from escaping, HICCUPS following after each bout of laughter. she smelt strongly of butterbeer, that sweet, strong scent of something sybill hardly got a chance to drink. it wasn’t that she was a light-weight, it was more that she was light, and didn’t weigh much – the beer went straight to her head, leaving her more strange than usual.
“ daisy, daisy, DAISY ! i’m hungry ! ”
GIGGLEWATER might not’ve been on the table that night, but that didn’t stop the two girls from tittering constantly. the sickly sweet scent of the alcohol they had been drinking was still so enticing to dear little daisy, pulling her towards the bar with the intention of getting more.
❝ WE SHOULD HAVE PANCAKES, ❞ she called across the floor, eyes glowing with excitement at her own suggestion. ❝ it’s not too late to have pancakes, right ?? ❞
daisy: i ate a brownie once. at a party in hogwarts. it was kind of indescribable really. i felt like i was floating. it turns out there wasn’t any marijuana in it, it was just an insanely good brownie.
“daisy hookum, you say the most unexpected things to me every time.” dorcas remarked with a sloppy smile, wondering for a second which of them was more wasted. “do you say that to all pretty faces or am i just THAT special?”
daisy gave an almost pained smile, shifting uncomfortably as she tried to find the best position to hold it in. ❝ it all depends, really. i mean you’re SPECIAL but i’d probably say that to anyway --- i mean anyone. ❞
“ i’ve got one bottle of tequila, i’ve got one daisy & i’ve got queen playing in the background. why shouldn’t i be excited? we’re going to a gig in two hours in camden. wait let me correct myself –– who wouldn’t be excited?! ”
daisy grinned, raising her glass as if in toast before taking a long sip. ❝ i stand corrected --- you’re COMPLETELY right. i feel like i’m... buzzing with excitement. or maybe that’s the alcohol... ❞
from the perspective of daisy’s daughter, grace toots, aged nine.
DAISY ROSE HOOKUM hummed quietly to herself as she spooned the cookie dough into neat circles on a tray. it was a song that grace didn’t quite recognise --- but sure to have been released prior to 1976. they always were. little grace’s fingers tapped impatiently on the countertop, watching as daisy danced around the kitchen and slid the cookie tray into the oven. closing the door with a decisive SNAP, she wiped her hands on her apron and pranced back over to her book, flipping through the pages as though looking for a new recipe ( even though she always stuck to the same ones ).
TWIRLING HER RED HAIR around her finger, grace didn’t dare draw attention to herself, afraid for what her mother might say this time should they strike up conversation. but it was too late --- daisy already knew she was there. with a broad smile on her face, daisy turned to her daughter, extending her hand as a sign for her to come and join. with a muted sigh, grace jumped off the barstool, slowly meandering her way towards her mother and tugging at her lips to try and force a smile.
❝ are you alright ?? ❞ she asked, voice calm and quiet as she’d been taught.
❝ oh dear, aren’t i supposed to be asking these questions ?? ❞
SHE WAS ALWAYS saying things like this, things that a mother should say but that could easily come from anyone’s mouth. grace had learnt long ago not to get her hopes up --- it only ended in h e a r t b r e a k.
WITH ANOTHER forced smile, grace nodded. ❝ i suppose you’re right. ❞
❝ of course i’m right --- i’m supposed to be right. ❞ another thing a mother might say. two in one go ?? perhaps... no. surely not. ❝ now i think that we should do something together, don’t you ?? why don’t we make snickerdoodles, my mums old recipe ?? ❞
❝ sounds great, m--- ❞ she cut herself short before she could finish the word. don’t draw attention. she would do as daisy asked and then she would retreat to her room, the routine of almost every afternoon.
❝ i love you. ❞
GRACE FROZE. the proclamation had seemingly come from nowhere --- a random announcement of love, as a mother would do. was this time different ?? perhaps it was one of those rare glimpses she got from time to time, the kind she treasured. perhaps she was aware this time, oh merlin how she hoped it was one of those times. just as she was about to respond ( i love you too, mum ) daisy spoke again.
❝ now we’d better hurry up --- we can’t be late for class again !! one more late class and i might not pass my newts. ❞
AND HER HEART SUNK. it was not different. it was the same, it was the same, it was always the same. daisy had never been aware of her own daughter --- the second wizarding war and the loss of her husband, her friends, her family, it had been enough to send her spiralling, and now daisy rose hookum believed she was 17 years old, before the war and before the tragedy, and she didn’t even know it was her daughter she was speaking to. and merlin, how it filled grace with a n g e r.
❝ y’know, i think i might pass this time, actually, ❞ she spoke, using all her willpower to keep the tears at bay.
❝ oh ?? ❞ came daisy’s reply.
❝ yeah, i’m not feeling all too well. i might just go and lie down. see you later. ❞
❝ oh, ok. i’ll tell slughorn where you are? ❞
❝ uhh... sure. ❞
WITHOUT WAITING for a response, grace turned on her heel and hurried out of the kitchen, pushing through the doors and rushing through the hall to reach her room. her breath was shaky, eyes on the verge of spilling tears, and this didn’t go unnoticed by the hookum’s carer, natalie. following her up the stairs, natalie called out.
❝ gracie, what’s wrong ?? ❞
WITHOUT ANOTHER WORD, grace turned abruptly to face natalie and fell into her arms where she began to sob, sob and sob until she had no fluid left, and then she was frozen.
❝ i don’t have a mother, nat, ❞ she whispered. ❝ and i never will. ❞
summary:
after the conclusion of the first wizarding war, daisy was absolutely distraught about the loss of many of her friends and all of her family. in an attempt to escape the aftermath of chaos and carnage, daisy put her research into muggles into good use and spent the year of 1982 living like a muggle. she later published a book entitled ‘ my life as a muggle ’. as this book began to garner success, daisy continued to live her life, and in the early months of 1984 she met tilden toots, whom she instantly fell in love with. the pair were married in the summer of 1985. both tilden and daisy were desperate to have children, but unfortunately they struggled immensely and suffered three miscarriages before daisy finally fell pregnant for good in 1997. they lived their lives happily, staying as far away as they could from the second wizarding war until the day tilden attempted to rescue a young muggleborn from the hands of a death eater and was ultimately killed. daisy was eight months pregnant at the time. now completely alone, daisy fell into a deep state of depression and after the birth of her daughter, grace ( named after her mother ), she developed a rare strand of ptsd which made her believe she was once again 17 years of age and that none of the devastation which had occurred throughout the first and second wizarding war had happened yet. because of this, daisy and grace were assigned a permanent carer, natalie, who all but acted as grace’s mother. as the young girl grew up, strict rules were put into place where daisy was concerned --- she was to treat her mother as a fellow student, she was never to try and tell her it was anything but 1976 and she could never, ever call her mum. the belief was that if daisy’s dream world were to shatter, she would too, and the absolute last thing they wanted was for daisy to become at risk of suicide. eventually, as daisy grew older and grace moved out, daisy developed dementia and died at the age of 81. while grace tried her best to remember her fondly, it was always difficult --- daisy rose hookum had never really been her mother.
