pale blue eyes linger on sigrún’s angelic visage for a moment as she begins to stir,  watching the way she adjusts the jacket around her shoulders like it’s a quiet comfort.   it’s the smallest of gestures,  but it hits him right in the chest all the same,  knowing she can find safety in a piece of his clothing.   he just can’t help the soft smile that tugs at his lips as he sits down beside her,  folding a thick scarf over his lap to make for a pillow and tapping it,  silently inviting her to lay her head on it.

“yeah,  a couple more delays,”   he sighs,  rubbing a hand over his face,  his voice still a little rough from the exhaustion of the day.   “this snowstorm is now directly over the midwest and messing with all the flights,  apparently.   it’s gonna be a couple more hours,  but…”   he reaches over,  brushing a few stray strands of hair from her face,  his thumb lingering just for a moment longer than necessary.   “i’m sure we’ll get there before christmas.   you should probably text your family,  though.   let them know we’ll be stuck here a while longer so they don’t worry.”

❛ i'll call them in a little while . ❜ sigrún rubbed the sleep from one of her eyes . her parents were more than likely out and about , or running errands . . . and frankly , sigrún was too tired to talk . it felt like it was surely nearing two or three in the morning , and her heart ached for alex who had stayed awake all this time . pale blue eyes moved towards the sound of his voice , rough and scratchy , and sigrún sighed .

❛ you need to get some sleep , ❜ the woman muttered . she reached her arms over her head and stretched . ❛ i'll listen for any changes . ❜ she wasn't sure if alex would sleep . he was always so protective over her , which sigrún did not mind most of the time . . . though sometimes she reminded him that she had lived alone for many years prior to meeting him , and once that she was not a child . ❛ i think this is the most comfortable uncomfortable couch i've ever slept on . ❜ she teased with a smile . ❛ and once we do get to board we'll be able to get on first . you'll have the whole flight to catch up on your sleep . ❜

alex kneels beside the blonde, the ground’s damp and cold beneath his knees, but he doesn’t care. his fingers are careful on her chin as they turn her face toward the dying light of day, cloth in his other hand. the cut below her lip has something in his gut twisting with rage. “this world is full of people who lie to make life easier for themselves. can’t you be one of those people? at least sometimes? you know, when your health’s at stake?” he asks with a sigh, only partially joking, dabbing at the dried blood with nothing but tenderness. “it takes a particular kind of courage to tell a man he’ll never get what he wants but it’s okay to do the opposite if it means staying safe.” that man could have killed her. alex sometimes wonders if sigrún realizes how dangerous her job can be — does she understand it all and risks her life anyway? or does she remain oblivious?

when she places the pretty plant in his palm, he lets her guide him, examining the leaves and stems and clusters of sun-yellow flowers. “what exactly does it cure? are we stocking up on it for any particular reason?” he inquires, a ghost of a smile playing at the corner of his mouth. it doesn’t quite reach his eyes, though. he’s too worried about her — men tend to take their anger out on the messenger, even if it doesn’t change the fate, it helps them feel better. and that’s all that matters to them in the heat of the moment. “how many should we gather? a full basket?” his voice is softer now, threaded with something gentler than worry. affection.

“better tomorrow, huh?” he exhales, shaking his head. he looks down at the plant in his palm again, then around them, spotting a similar one not far away and moving to pick it up. “doesn’t make it okay, you know? the fact that it will heal soon. i can’t just let it slide. i don’t care who he is. no one can lay hands on you.” but then she says it, that she doesn’t want him to get hurt, and it hits him straight in the chest. he shakes his head slowly, brows drawing together as he places the blood-tinged cloth in his pocket. “i’ve started fights for far less noble reasons than this.” and he’ll be smart about it. he just doesn’t want her to worry about him. “come on,” he stands and offers his hand, “let’s go find more of these flowers before it gets dark.”

blonde brows furrowed over pale blue eyes when alex spoke . sigrún often had to remind herself that they came from two different peoples , that alexander didn't understand . she refrained from wincing each time the cloth was pressed to the angry cut on her bottom lip and ignored the metallic taste that filled her mouth afterwards . the seer shook her head slowly once alex released her chin , tongue probing the tender spot in her mouth to test how deeply the wound cut .

❛ i cannot lie . ❜ if freya or odin or the norns had given her this gift all those years ago at the cost of her sight they could just as easily take it away . ❛ it is a very unwise man who strikes his jarl's seer , and an even more unwise man who strikes a messenger from the gods . ❜ sigrún reached for his hand on her chin , long and thin fingers intertwining with his . ❛ the consequences will be swift , i assure you . . . but please , do not take justice into your own hands . ❜

the seer let alexander guide her to her feet . with her basket in one hand she reached for his arm , trusting him to lead her . behind them skuld stretched on the fallen log she had been resting upon , mouth opened in a yawn before she began to pace behind them . the cat was never far from sigrún , even spending evenings often curled up upon the seer's legs while sigrún slept .

❛ it cures very little , but it aids quite a lot . ❜ sigrún smiled , refraining from allowing herself to wince as the action tugged on the cut on her lip . ❛ as an ointment or a poultice it helps with healing wounds , with bleeding , or keeping infection at bay . as a tea it helps with fevers , sour stomachs , watery bowels . . . it is a useful little thing , isn't it ? ❜ with his second question her smile faded slightly and her grip on his arm tightened . ❛ i've had . . . dark dreams as of late . i worry that there will be a plague this winter . i want to make sure that i am prepared to help those who wish to take it from me . ❜

the question takes him by surprise. one moment they’re talking about the beautiful constellations above and sigrún’s late father, and the the next she’s asking about his mother. gods, alex hasn’t allowed himself to dwell on those memories in such a long time, and still he finds himself nodding softly and humming in confirmation. “not much, but i do remember some things. i see her in little flashes here and there. the smell of her hair when she hugged me, she always smelled of roses, the feel of her sweater against my cheek, the way her laugh made everything seem more cheerful, lighter. but i was only six when she died. i was too young to understand the permanence of it, but old enough to feel the void she left behind… grief is a strange thing. it ages with you, doesn’t it? never truly leaves.” but you learn to live with it, learn to accept that it will always sit quietly in the background, waiting for these soft moments of quiet vulnerability.

alex falls silent again, smiling softly as he listens to the sound of sigrún’s voice. he wishes he could spend the rest of his life in this very moment, with her. a soft chuckle escapes him. “sometimes i forget that your father was once a great warrior. that explains his knowledge of the stars, though. they need to know their way around, their lives depend on it.” no one wants to be lost at sea, never find their way back home. “funny, i never caught an axe to the belly but that’s exactly how i felt when i first laid eyes on you. that’s how i feel, still. you must be a goddess, sigrún,” the blond insists, fingertips dancing on the other’s side, memorizing the feel of her smooth skin on his. “what about these visions?” that he doesn’t fully believe in, that he wants to rationalize and insist are mere dreams, coincidences. “did your mother or father also have those?” he wonders, lacing their fingers together and bringing her hand to his lips to kiss each delicate knuckle.

“a spell or a bad meal, hm?” the blond repeats with a hint of amusement, figuring it really does sound like both of these things. “it’s neither.” he untangles his fingers from hers, allowing her hand to rest on his bare chest. a calloused fingertip tracing a new pattern on the back of her hand. half-man, half-horse. “according to some of those books of mine, a centaur was a strange creature. had the body of a horse, but the upper part, head, arms, and torso was that of a man. they lived down south, on the coast of thessaly, in a place called magnesia. they were fearless fighters.” encouraged by this one question alone, alex never has to be asked twice to share his knowledge and carries on, speaking softly as his fingertip begins to draw a different creature on her skin, “there was also a thing called the minotaur. half-man, half-bull. it lived in the labyrinth and was fed sacrificial youths until theseus killed him. i mean, these are just fairytales, but it’s fascinating what the human mind can create.”

sigrún listened quietly , as she always did when alexander would speak of his mother . she knew that he still felt her loss deeply and wondered , not for the first time , what it must have been like . she was her parents' only child , and she had lost both of them by the time she was seven . she wished that she could take the hurt from him , or perhaps find some way to give him every memory of her as though it happened only a day or so ago . she let the silence be still for a moment before alexander was chuckling again .

❛ my visions ? ❜ she asked . ❛ i thought you didn't believe in them . . . do you want yours told now ? ❜ sigrún joked with a smile . somewhere beyond them something scurried in the brush and skuld , ever vigilant , lept silently from her tree branch onto the ground . the lynx disappeared in the bushes , prowling .

the seer threw her head back with a laugh , one that came straight from her belly with her lips pulled wide in a smile . ❛ flattery does little to change your fate , ❜ she teased and turned her gray eyes towards alexander again . ❛ i am far from a goddess , and i fear that after höðr and baldur , asgard may not open its doors to me . ❜ she was referring to the story of the blind god höðr , who through trickery had slain his beloved brother by mistake and was slain in return . ❛ my father would say that my mother had dreams . . . i was too young to remember . ❜

sigrún was only four when she and her mother fell ill from the same plague that killed almost half of her village . sigrún woke without her sight , her mother never woke at all . she knew her mother through stories she remembered her father telling , through songs he would sig to lull her to sleep that he had learned from her .

sigrún let her thumb brush along his as alex reached for her hand , and she felt every last kiss he placed to her knuckles . she was never fond of touch , but she liked his . his touch did odd things to her heart and her belly , sometimes they would even make her face grow hot . she wondered if her face was red now , as her cheeks began to feel warm when alexander drew on her hand with his finger . she could feel the faint beat of his heart beneath her palm and the smooth skin of his chest and her cheeks grew hotter .

❛ half man and half horse ? ❜ she grinned and her voice took on that impish tone again when she joked , ❛ do they muck out their own stables ? and can they eat meat , or just hay and grains ? ❜ the seer chuckled , smile softening after her joke and she continued to listen to his stories . her father could not read , nor could her mother . she was always enthralled with the knowledge and stories alexander would find in his books . ❛ part man and part bull ? i think you are teasing me now . ❜ sigrún was laughing again , something that was quite easy with alexander . ❛ why did theseus kill him ? what other half-man half-beasts are there ? ❜

alex doesn’t speak right away. instead, he listens to the sound of sigrún’s voice, pale blue hues fixated on the flickering constellations overhead. the fire pops softly beside them, stray embers drifting up to the sky every now and then. it feels like something sacred, the way she speaks of her father and the stars. he figures it’s the kind of memory she’s carried in her heart so carefully that even breathing too loud might scatter it, and holds his breath until she’s done speaking. alex knows a thing or two about memories involving people who are long gone, he has a few of his own that he treasures dearly.

he turns just slightly, enough to see her fingers tracing invisible shapes in the air, creating drawings in the sky that he fails to recognize immediately. his voice, when it finally does come, is low and a little raspy. “they do, yeah.” he presses his lips to her hair, breathing her in, kissing her blonde strands. the arm that’s tucked under her neck, acting as a makeshift pillow, pulls her closer into him. “the books say that when you cross the equator, the whole sky changes. some of the northern constellations vanish and new ones rise in their place. there’s this one large constellation that makes out a centaur, and a small one that’s made of just four stars, called the southern cross.” a pause, then, almost hesitant, afraid he’ll sound like a know-it-all. but he just wants to share his knowledge with her. “the books say you can tell where you are in the world just by looking at the sky. if you know how to read it, that is.”

he looks over at her, just enough to see the outline of her profile, soft in the firelight, looking so serene and beautiful that it makes his heart ache. he’s never loved anyone how he loves her. he wants to give her the world, protect her and make sure she’s happy at all times. “your father sounds like he knew things that don’t come from books but rather from experience. fishermen know a lot more about the stars than people like me.” the ones who read and study a lot, but have never actually tried to use the shimmering compass up above to navigate the seas. his hand shifts, fingertips dancing on her hip. “did he have names for them? the stars? and did you ever learn how to navigate them?”

❛ i don't remember their names . do you remember much of your mother ? ❜ sigrún admitted , the memory fading just as quickly as it rose . when she was younger she never thought of her parents . her mind was too full of visions , of dreams to understand , seidr to learn , and how to adjust to life without her eyes . by the time the fog in her mind had cleared she had few memories of her parents that had survived . she couldn't even remember their faces anymore . she recalled the faded ink of a tattoo on her father's neck , and a thick beard . of her mother she could only recall braided yellow hair and the jingle of jewelry and pouches and keys attached to her belt .

❛ he sailed and raided when he was younger . he learned more of the stars and navigating there than he did fishing , i think . ❜ she smiled , and then after another moment she chuckled . the sound was soft and quiet in the still night . ❛ he told me that he met my mother when an axe found his belly . the wound was not deep , but he would swear up and down that he was sure she was a valkyrie , or a goddess . he said that she was too beautiful for midgard . ❜

sigrún shook her head slightly and heard skuld adjust herself on a branch near by . amber eyes looked towards alex and then back to the forest around them , waiting and listening . she didn't ever learn to navigate by the stars , she was too young when she lost her sight . sigrún let out a sigh and shut her eyes again , content to listen to the steady beat of his heart and the quiet rasp of his voice .

❛ what is a centaur ? ❜ sigrún asked , a giggle present in her voice . she had never heard of a centaur before and couldn't conjure up an image in her mind of what that star design would look like . ❛ it sounds like a spell . or a bad meal . ❜

sigrún stirred when she felt something be placed over her , the smell of cedar that always clung to alex suddenly filling her nose . she reached towards her shoulder where she felt the soft fabric of the jacket alex had been wearing and had draped over her . a smile tugged on her lips and she tugged the jacket a little tighter around her shoulders .

it was so late that the airport was nearly silent save for the quiet whispers of people like them who were still waiting for their flights . sigrún pushed herself from where laid on a couch alex had found near their gate to a seated position and rubbed the sleep from her eyes . she turned towards the sound of movement as she assumed that alex had taken a seat next to her .

❛ what did they say ? are we delayed again ? ❜ she asked and stifled a yawn with the back of her hand . they'd been trying to visit her parents for the holidays near kristiansund on the wester coast of norway , but winter storms in the states seemed to be working against them since the moment they had left .

sigrún could smell the smoke of the campfire in the air and feel the warmth of alex's body beside her own . her eyes were shut and somewhere in the canopy of tree branches above them skuld's yellow eyes watched for prey or danger . she was safe here between alex and skuld , and it was a feeling she hadn't had for ages . it might have appeared as though she was asleep , having been lulled to rest by alex's voice , until she hummed and shifted beside him .

❛ my father tried to teach me about the stars when i was little . he was a fisherman . ❜ she yawned , shifting her body closer to the warmth of alex's side . ❛ my mother would go to bed early and he would take me to the shore . he'd point out the stars and tell me stories . he wanted to teach me how to navigate with them . ❜ laying on her back , sigrún reached one of her hands up . with her finger she traced the shape of one from her memory in the air . the big spoon and the little one . she could still see the constellations in her mind , though her memory of some were more blurry than others .

❛ some of the men who have gone south tell me that the stars are different . ❜ she remembered the drunken stories of men fresh from the boats after years at sea . ❛ they say that the patterns are different . . . do your books mention such a thing ? ❜

“good ‘cause i’m not calling you one!”   alexander isn’t really one to yell either,  but emotions have been running high today and he’s having trouble keeping his usual cool.   his pale blue hues flicker to the wild creature that’s grooming itself now,  maintaining eye contact for a moment before looking back at the blonde.   it feels so wrong,  fighting with her over something so trivial.   “fine!   fight your own battles.   from now on,  i’ll be just standing back,  letting people walk all over you ‘cause that’s what you want,”   he grumbles,  pulling what he assumes must be weeds.   he’s not as skilled of a gardener and herb-collector as sigrún,  but he always does his best to help her out.   though,  maybe he shouldn’t.   maybe she’d feel better if he stopped helping her altogether.   oh,  what is he even thinking about?   it’s anger speaking.

“siggy?”   he says in a much calmer manner,  taking a deep breath as his fingers dig into his sandy mane.   he may be a little overprotective of her,  but it’s all in good faith.   it’s all out of love,  not because he thinks she’s incapable of defending herself.   “i don’t think you’re a child.   i don’t see you as weaker or lesser than myself.   but you can’t expect me to sit by and let men hurt you ‘cause they don’t like what you’re telling them.”   he isn’t certain whether he believes this gift of hers —   can she truly see into the future?   regardless whether she’s telling lies or imagining things or has a genuine gift,  no one will ever lay a hand on her in his presence.   “what did you tell that man anyway?”   he wonders,  kneeling beside her and gently touching her chin,  trying to turn her face towards him.   “i’m alright,  are you hurt?   your lip’s bleeding.”   he pulls out a clean handkerchief and presses it tenderly to her skin.

❛ the truth . ❜ sigrún shrugged her shoulders , hearing the rustling of leaves and pine needles beneath alex's feet as he approached her and knelt beside her . his fingers brushed along her chin and she felt a girlish flush rise to her cheeks as he turned her face towards him , pressing some kind of cloth to her sore lip . ❛ many want to know their fate until they know their fate . he wanted to know if he will feast with the gods , i told him that his fate rests in niflheim . ❜ niflheim , the cold , barren land ruled by the goddess hel for those that died of disease or age , hardly the fate a warrior wanted .

sigrún let out a breath and reached to take his hands in hers . she drew one of the plants she had collected from her basket into one of her hands , and then pressed it to his . with her hands over his she guided his hands down the stem of the plant . ❛ large , feathered leaves . ❜ sigrún moved his fingers along each structure of the plant as she spoke . ❛ a stem that forks , clusters of small flowers on each of the smaller stems . ❜ she plucked one of the small yellow flowers from the stem and crushed it between her fingers so he could smell the strong , sweet smell of the flower .

❛ yarrow . it is medicinal . can you help me find more ? ❜ winter usually brought with it illness , amongst other things . last night she had a dream of barren fields , bodies wracked with coughs , young and old with gaunt faces . a plague ? perhaps one similar to the illness that had swept through lunden however many years ago ? sigrún intended to keep her stock filled for any who would take her help .

alex reached for her face , touching the cut below her lip gently . her jaw clenched briefly from the pain before she shook her head . ❛ it will be better tomorrow . ❜ she paused and let out a breath , the rest of her fight leaving her with the puff of air that left her lips . ❛ that man is one of the jarl's best men , he has never lost a battle or a duel . i . . . i do not want you to get hurt because of me . ❜

@4lexnilsen sent : [ CONFLICT ] during an argument with the sender, the receiver realizes there's an unspoken depth to their feelings, and takes a second to consider them closer.

❛ i am not a child ! ❜ sigrún was not one to yell , and even skuld flinched as she was woken from her nap atop a fallen log . skuld's yellow eyes flicked about the area before settling on alex , where her ears turned forward . she raised a massive paw to her face and began to groom herself , though one ear remained turned towards him .

sigrún's fingers traced along the stem of an herb in her hands . she felt large leaves with feathered edges and then how the stem forked into three smaller stems . atop each stem was a cluster of small flowers , and when she crushed one of the flowers between her fingers the already strong scent of the plant grew stronger . yarrow , she thought to herself , and began to collect the plant in a basket beside her .

❛ i do not need you to fight every battle for me . ❜ sigrún's voice was quieter , more gentle , but the frustration was still there . ❛ the fates continue to weave , and often men of ambition and pride fail to remember that our stories were spun from our first breath . ❜ sigrún's lip still stung from where the man's ring had caught it when he struck her . she let out a heavy sigh . ❛ are you hurt , alexander ? ❜

first off, mega massive thanks to my lovely and brilliant friend @whatspoilers for the EXCELLENT title!! hi my loves! so this is a list of scenarios in which the receiver has an opportunity to look at the sender in a different light, resulting in... something. a kiss? a punch? a declaration? a confession? i know you guys, i know how spicy your brains are, so spice away! i do want to stress that the outcome of the "feelings" does NOT necessarily need to be a romantic one. it could be anger, it could be a sudden revelation, a betrayal, a heartbreaking plot twist, whatever you want! i insist on making this very clear: if you send this, there is NO expectation of the receiver to make it romantic UNLESS they want to. likewise, if the feelings ARE romantic, it's not force-shipping, this is just the receiver's muse getting a minute to evaluate their relationship with the sender and how they want it to continue! and ofc DO NOT ADD TO OR EDIT THIS LIST!

[ DANCE ]: while the sender and receiver are slow dancing together, their close proximity and the intimacy of the situation causes feelings to rise to the surface.

[ BED ]: while the sender is sleeping beside them, the receiver has a moment to watch them and consider their own feelings, resulting in clarity and a realization.

[ CONSTELLATION ]: as the pair lie down in a field and watch the stars overhead, the receiver turns to watch the sender gazing skywards, leading to them confronting their own feelings.

[ NURSE ]: after a battle gone wrong, the receiver begins to tend to the sender's wounds, fading adrenaline and rising fear causing them to realize their feelings.

[ OBSERVATION ]: when showing the sender something they've been working on, the receiver can't help but address their feelings as the sender gazes in wonder at their work.

[ ENTRANCED ]: while the sender works on something they're passionate about, the receiver has a chance to look at them properly and consider their own feelings for them.

[ DEFENCE ]: when the sender rushes to defend the receiver against a threat of any description, the receiver takes a moment to consider how they feel about the sender.

[ COLLABORATION ]: as they work together on a project, the receiver has a moment in which they contemplate their true feelings regarding the sender.

[ CONFLICT ]: during an argument with the sender, the receiver realizes there's an unspoken depth to their feelings, and takes a second to consider them closer.

[ DEFIANCE ]: after realizing there's a situation which could threaten one of their lives in order to protect a larger group, the receiver and sender have a fierce argument in private, leading to a realization of their real feelings.

[ TRAINING ]: during a sparring session, the sender and receiver end up on the floor, leading one of them to seizing the upper hand and straddling the other. the receiver has an unexpected realization of their feelings regarding their sparring partner in the process.

[ FAMILY ]: watching the sender interacting fondly with others, the receiver (from afar) takes a moment to take a closer look at their relationship.

[ STORM ]: when the two of them get caught outside in a rainstorm, the receiver uses an umbrella/jacket as a shelter, which the sender shares with them, causing the receiver to be confronted with the truth of their relationship with the sender.
