“Mhmm…” Syd hummed in disinterested agreement, not even bothering to look up from her book at Farouk. She could sense when a monologue coming on, and she had long since learned that sometimes it was better to just let it happen. Let him talk, impart whatever wisdom he felt he needed to upon her, and then get back to better things. 

Sometimes, however, curiosity got the best of her. Upon finishing the passage she had been focused on, she closed her book on her finger to hold her place and finally looked up to meet Farouk’s eye. “You’re helping me save it, though. So where does that leave you?”

Farouk lies in bed, his head on Syd's chest. Or, as it were, on his own chest. It's getting easier and easier to do this, to swap bodies and lie together. Natural. He turns his head to look up at his own face, wearing her expressions. "Tell me - do you feel like a woman when we do this? Or a man?"

It’s comfortable; lying in bed with him like this, one arm draped around her own shoulders, fingers gently brushing over bare skin. She’d never tried this with anyone else before him. David gave her away around her powers, but Farouk works with them. Allows her in. Takes her place. It means she can have the contact she’s denied herself for so long, and knowing he’s willing to give over something he fought so hard to reclaim is a wonderful rush.

“Hmm?” She lifts her head - his head - to look down at him wearing her face. “No. I feel like me. As much as I ever do. Bodies don’t matter so much when you never stay in just one.” The irony of saying that to him isn’t lost on her. A small smile tugs at her lips and she moves her hand up to stroke blonde hair back from the face Amahl possesses. “Did you feel like a woman? With Lenny? Or were you just… you?”

Tell me about your mother. She died loading the dishwasher. January 2nd, a Thursday. I was five. We were in the yellow house on Potsdamer Platz. This was when Pops was stationed in Germany. I’m in half pants and a dinosaur shirt playing with Silly Putty on the floor. Remember how you could press it into the funnies in the newspaper and make a copy? 9:15 in the morning. It was raining. Then it stopped and the sun came out. And I’m pressing the Silly Putty into this paper on the floor. This black and white linoleum in, like, a chevron pattern. And the kitchen is warm from the steam when you open the dishwasher. And she finished the plates, and took out the cutlery basket. She’s unloading the dinner dishes, singing along with the radio. “99 Luftballons.” She had a nice voice.

“Do you ever think of it?” Farouk asks, stroking Syd’s hair. They are curled up, lazy and vulnerable, in the White Room. “The future. Legion, der Weltmörder. Our David, ending the world. Difficult to imagine - but, in a way, tantalizing, don’t you think?”

“No.”

It’s not that Syd doesn’t think about that, because she does. It’s an awful thought. David ending the world. Killing everyone, or almost everyone. The end of the world is never something she wanted to think about, but the idea that her man could be the one to do that is almost too terrible to bear.

Her head resting on Farouk’s chest, she stares off at the far wall for a moment as she tries to push those thoughts from her mind. With a turn of her head, she buries her face against him and presses a kiss there. It might not chase away those thoughts from his mind, but she can try to offer him something better to focus on.

“Don’t talk like that,” she murmurs, voice muffled against his skin. “The end of the world isn’t tantalizing. You’d have nothing left, and then he’d kill you. I might not be there to save you again.”
