there was never a point in jumi's life where she was never being controlled by someone else.

when she wanted to do dance instead of cram school, her mother signed her up for an extra one just to punish her for the thought. when she was caught learning guitar, her father forced her to perform for her family while the picked apart everything wrong with her technique, her posture, her sound. she was always doing what everyone else said; performing for her right to exist. when she became a trainee, she told herself she'd never let that happen again. so who was surprised when she became the trainee every instructor groaned the moment they saw her, that they screamed til they were hoarse at, and the one every other trainee side-eyed for being combative -- including her roommate.

the vibes in their room was never particularly pleasant -- usually because she was coming home from a long day of arguing and was forced to sit in her fury and frustration alongside someone else. no one talks about how hard it is to get used to having someone around all the time. but today felt different.

maybe it was the way she kept hearing a sigh behind her, or the constant shifting of the bed, or maybe she long, inquisative stares at the back of her head -- either way, jumi was irritated more than usual.

with a huff, jumi turned around from her desk with her arms crossed and her eyes narrowed. "jaeyi, if you have something to say, say it. i'm not in the mood for... whatever this is." the two of them rarely spoke, negative or otherwise, but she could still tell that jaeyi seemed like she was holding her tongue about something, and jumi was going to get to the bottom of it.

generally, jaeyi knows what she has to do. keep her head down, focus on her own singing and dancing, be a model trainee with a good personality and an admirable work ethic. she has to be clean, because she has far too much to lose. opportunities as golden yet unstable as this one is one that she’s forced to grasp with her two bare hands. jaeyi’s not even sure what she can go back to if she doesn’t make it here.

jumi is the opposite. she’s someone that she doesn’t see often, despite their shared living space and somewhat close proximity; jaeyi’s either fast asleep or has one foot out the door during the in betweens from training and resting. she does see her at their classes, though, and never does jumi control her expressions and or herself. always, always, she’ll be combative with their teachers.

she understands. at times, it’s tiring to swallow down every word. you should be defending yourself and your talent. what jaeyi doesn’t understand is why this girl takes every chance to be combative, because it only leads to instructors looking at you sideways and scolding you. rather, jaeyi would prefer to save her breath.

“no, it’s just… don’t you want to debut, jumi?” she asks, and they meet eyes now. “i don’t think your attitude with the instructors is going to help with that.”

jumi clenches her jaw and narrows her eyes in an expression she finds herself making often these days. of course jaeyi feels that way— most people do when it comes to her. she hears it all; every whisper amongst the trainees, every scoff amongst the staff and even more so from the trainers. jumi must not want it enough. that’s the conclusion they’ve all come to. even though she’s the earliest to practice and stays the latest, even if she’s putting her all into improving.

“just because i have self respect doesn’t mean i don’t want to debut,” the words come out harsh and in the form of a sneer, which jumi doesn’t even attempt to soften. “just because i don’t let them mistreat me, it means i don’t care about my career?” it was frustrating, not just because of the fact that she was the one looked down on because she wanted better for herself, but also because she hated seeing jaeyi just taking it.

didn’t she want to stand up for herself? how could she not understand that what jumi was doing was a good thing? she was always polite and respectful until they treated her poorly first. yet here she was, like always, scolded. “it’s not right, the way they talk down to us. and it’ll only get worse if we just continue to take it.” jumi huffed and folded her arms, finally looking away from jaeyi to focus on her own lap. bruises from how hard she pushed herself littered her legs as a reminder of the worst of it. they were harming her body, sure, a natural side effect of the way they pushed and pushed their limits. they’d get to push her body, but never her mind. that was the promise she made herself.

if she was like jaeyi and the others, how could she expect things to improve once they did debut? would she be expected to just take it forever? until they disbanded? how many years would that be? the thought sickened her. that wasn’t want she wanted when she decided to become a trainee. so she’d continue to be who she was, arguing back when she had to, and she wasn’t going to let anyone shame her for it.

“i do it for you too, you know. all of us, the trainees.” she said with a much softer tone, her gaze shifting back towards jaeyi with much more neutral expression. not quite kind, but not … aggressive.

there was strategy to everything in life — every relationship, every choice, every word (spoken or unspoken). there was always something behind everything else, and that’s why jumi loved chess.

truthfully, any game like it; chess, go, shogi, mahjong, checkers even. there was something comforting about the straight-forward nature of it that made it easier than having a conversation or making friends. the paths to victory seemed more certain – set in stone – in ways that people simply weren’t. overtime, of course, jumi learned that nothing was ever quite that simple but still, the games remained her best friend and confidant in many ways.

recently, however, something had complicated things. or rather someone.

it started simple enough – jumi was running through one of her old chess games on her own, analysing her play strategies when someone she’s only come across in passing asked to play her. but then that simple game began to make her sweat, clench her teeth, and desperately run her fingers through her hair before ultimately culminating in her loss. perhaps it was because she’s gotten so comfortable playing online, or maybe she’d just had an off day, but she found herself lingering around the common areas with her chess set always set up for a game until haru was around.

that behavior continued – jumi always just so happened to be ready for a game and they’d play until they couldn’t anymore. sometimes, jumi would win and she’d find herself beaming with an almost child-like joy at her victory. other times, she’d be frantically running her fingers through her hair and tapping her finger on the table as she tried to contain her competitive rage. but no matter what, she’d never considered playing anyone else.

on this day (or rather night if you checked the time), jumi sat cross legged and hunched over the chess board placed on the practice room floor with her brows furrowed like she could cry. she’d always been an aggressive player, it was just who she was, but this was one of those times it didn’t seem like it would be working in her favor. she found herself constantly reaching for a piece and pulling back; reaching, pulling back, reaching, pulling back. jumi lifted her gaze to make eye contact with haru – always so composed and put together in a way she never was. though they were both rather anti-social, his way of being always came across to her like it was intentional, whereas she just couldn’t pull off social interaction if she tried.

“...just like this game,” jumi whispered to herself in response to her own thoughts as she lowered her eyes back to the chess board that foretold her terrible defeat. her hair, which had been pulled into a ponytail for the sake of dance practice, was too secured for her to run her fingers through it like usual so she instead opted to bite at her nail in thought.

“would you be willing to call it a draw?” jumi asked dryly, knowing it was far from a draw. with a sigh, she adjusted her seating so she could pull her knee to chest and rest her chin upon it. a small, thoughtful pout developed on her face as she scanned the board. “it feels like you’re inventing new ways to beat me every time.”

it all started on a whim, one of little consequence. there she was, amongst a sea of others who sought entertainment through other outlets. and there he was, open about the hobbies that occupied his free time but never really delving too deep into it because most never understood. except for her, haru soon enough gathered by the frequency of the moments he would oh so happen to bump into her through pure coincidence. as if he could believe it were all pure coincidence.

much to his own surprise, in spite of his preference for solitude, haru was rarely seen without a handful of friends hovering around him. the first time he approached her too, asking for a casual game, he had three or four friends with him who were curious at first and lingered for a while, intrigued by the sight of their friend flexing muscles he never really got to demonstrate much with them. the novelty of that soon wavered off and they said they would meet up with him again later before excusing themselves. which was well and all, because there came a point where he was slightly concerned about the threat of losing, and his friends could do better than to see him in an unfavourable position.

since then, whenever he would 'coincidentally' bump into jumi and she seemed ready for a game, haru would politely ditch his friends and indulge them both. there were times when he lost, times when they mutually agreed to a draw, and times when he reigned triumphant.

tonight appeared to be one of those times.

cockiness could very well ruin the game for him, even if all the odds seemed to be greatly in his favour this time around, so he reigned in his delight and stayed vigilant throughout the game. his years in kyudo probably trained him well in that skill; remaining calm and composed, balancing out heightened emotions (both positive and negative) in favour of neutrality, was the name of the game, and haru came out of it a master in the craft.

he had his arms crossed against his chest, much like his legs on the ground, and he patiently waited for her to make her next move. that did not seem to be any time soon, based on her request for a draw, and haru let out a small chuckle.

"of course not," he playfully scoffed and gestured to his own pieces on the board. "why would i agree to a draw in my current position? whatever you do, it will be checkmate in two. i think you've delayed the inevitable for long enough."

as much as he loved winning, he was by no means rude, and he was raised to always be polite and courteous towards others. so instead of gloating any further, he gave her a gentle smile and spoke with the refinement he was so well known for.

"if you concede now, we can play another game before calling it a night. you'll get me next time." and she often did.

always the gentleman, and jumi did appreciate it ... when she wasn't losing. the itch to be a sore loser was getting hard not to scratch. instead she sighed and repositioned herself to have her legs crossed with her hands in her lap. if she didn't move, she technically didn't lose.

she took the time to analyze haru, her eyes sharp but not angry. just... curious. the two of them rarely had conversation during their games, mostly due to fault of her own. worried she might say the wrong thing or they'd disagree on something that would mean she'd no longer have their games to look forward to. jumi, if she was honest, didn't trust herself not to ruin the friendship she'd managed to secure. but on the other hand, she really didn't want to accept her defeat just yet.

"when did you learn to play? chess, i mean," she blurted out, awkwardly clearing her throat and looking away to go back to analyzing the board. everything has a strategy, like chess. she'd moved her pawn forward by asking a question; simple. easy. no reason to get anxious. her mind knew that, but her stomach turned in a way that showed her body disagreed. so, rather than wait for haru to take his turn in their verbal chess game, she kept talking.

"i kind of taught myself how to play, when i was younger. it was academic enough for my parents to not think of it as a waste of time," she frowned as she thought back on those times. if it had nothing to do with her studies, her parents didn't approve. chess was different -- it was fun for her, but they didn't hate it. they were mostly indifferent, but that was enough. "you're much better than me though, clearly."

jumi was being dramatic, she knew that. childish, almost like a tantrum. it wasn't like she hadn't lost before, but this time felt... different. maybe it was the poor week she'd had, but she'd wanted this win more than usual. she huffed softly and looked up from the board once again, this time with a soft, half smile that was gone just as quickly as it came. "i like playing still, even when i lose."

there were few things that made jumi smile — in fact she could probably count them on one hand. shockingly, education related things took up quite a bit of that list. even if she’d elected to not continue her education past her bachelor’s, it didn’t mean that academic spirit within her had died. she still enjoyed learning new things and flexing her brain muscles in a way singing, dancing, and guitar didn’t.

so when someone like seungho, someone who couldn’t be more her opposite, brought up the idea of her tutoring him, she hadn’t even hesitated to say yes. to jumi, it was an equalizer of sorts — no matter the differences they had, they could come together for that common goal. but god did she severely overestimate her tolerance.

cupping her chin in her hand as she leans against the table, her eyes narrow at the grin on seungho’s face. “in about 2 minutes, i’m going to show you exactly how many apples i can throw at your head before you lose consciousness,” anyone else might miss the slight jokiness in her tone, but after the number of sessions they'd had, jumi sometimes finds herself returning his energy. sometimes. she exhales through her nose and sits up to get a better look at the materials in front of them.

“your extra credit is me not standing up and leaving,” she says before, completely straight faced, flicking a forgotten piece of balled up paper right as his forehead. “focus — it’s good to refresh the basics before you get into the complex stuff.”

the paper hits his forehead, and seungho blinks like the universe just sent him a message written in recycled math. the corner of his lips twitches, "wow," he says finally, voice flat but bright around the edges. "love the hands-on teaching style." the pencil spins between his fingers, lazy, defiant. across from him, jumi looks carved from focus, all sharp lines, quiet purpose, the kind of person who believes in effort like it's a religion.

he leans forward, elbows on the desk now, pretending the numbers might make more sense if he breathes near them. "alright, professor. no apple violence, i'll focus." the grin lingers though, softening when she doesn't quite hide her smile.

the room settles and for once, he actually tries. it's clumsy, uneven, but real. he waits for jumi to look over, for her eyes to trace the mess of pencil marks and half-erased numbers. for a second, there's nothing. something in his chest lifts, waiting to if he got the problem right, suspended.

with eyes like a hawk, jumi scans the pages between them and watches the pencil move across the page like it way her prey. a soft smile rests on her face, satisfied seeing seungo finally putting in the effort she knows he's capable of. once the pencil stops moving, she lets her face go back to it's neutral state and gives a firm nod. "correct," she speaks matter-of-factly and leans back in her chair, satisfied.

silence falls over the room as she taps her finger on the table, her face twisting with a bit of hesitation. being vulnerable and emotional isn't her thing, and her parents weren't exactly full of praise when teaching her growing up. but seungho isn't her, and she isn't her parents.

letting out a small huff, jumi reaches out to lay a hand on seungho's with a soft expression. "you're smart. you know what you're doing, you just get stuck in your own head," she says, her voice low enough to be considered a whisper. she clears her throat and begins again, trying to sound more sure of herself. was this the right thing to say? it was just a conversation between friends, there was no reason to be so anxious. but the familiar knot in her stomach makes her pull back and break eye contact as she opens her mouth again.

"there's no reason to doubt yourself. i wouldn't bother helping you if i thought you were a lost cause," she gives a half smile before gesturing to the other practice pages between them. "you're not off the hook yet, though, keep going."

🪞 HYDE FACULTY FILE: "my wings that will change the world, towards you I fly."

🕯️ SECTION I — Identity

Name & Age: jophiel naya’il, also known as soteria / salus in her ancient form from the time the first child uttered it's first cry, jophiel has roamed. perhaps not in this physical form, but her spirit has lingered. she appears as a young, 25 year old woman to those who call to her.

Species: daimon, spirit of safety, salvation, and deliverance

House Affiliation: 🩸daywalkers --- jophiel holds no alliance with good nor evil in a traditional sense, she views all humanity as her children worthy of her protection, hence why she finds herself amongst the darker individuals as their protector.

Role (Student, Prefect, or Professor): professor of defensive and protective magic; her very existence is meant to ensure the safety of the world's beings, so she naturally took on the role of using her abilities and wealth of knowledge to teach her children to protect themselves and others.

🕸️ SECTION II — Aura & Style

Aesthetic / Monster Fit: jophiel exists as a sea of contradiction: her eyes pitch black with the light twinkle of the galaxy if one finds themselves staring into them, her long and unnaturally blonde hair flows down her shoulders to her chest, her size large and intimidating as she towers over the average human being. because of this, her fashion can't truly be defined as... fashionable. if you were to look at her, you'd think she'd just stepped out of a time machine. she's often adorned in pure white, flowing garments made of silk. they're typically worn as if they were wrapped and tied around her figure including her neck, much like a baby is swaddled at birth. sandals that look as if they've never even heard of dirt are laced up to her knees, mimicking the silky white of her garments. if one was to look at her in the sun, they might be blinded (though, she'd take the time to heal their eyes). her body is covered in a wide range of scars --- all shapes and sizes littered across her pale and glowing skin. beyond that, she's mostly bare. jewels and other adornments have never appealed to her, as material things typically don't fit her due to her size but also because she exists outside of time, space, and reality as others know it. her wings, much like her, are large and feathered pure white like a dove to evoke calm onto all that gaze upon her.

Powers:

FLIGHT: her wings aren't just for decoration --- jophiel is able to take flight like a missile. she isn't burdened by physics in the slightest, able to take off at her top speed at will.

DIVINE HEALING: as the spirit and embodiment of safety and salvation, jophiel is able to heal others by taking on their pain. it is a sacrifice she can make to completely heal someone of any pain they face --- both physical and mental --- through her tears should they call upon her. it has to be by their will, even if she wants to do what she can for them; if they do not call upon her, she must accept their wishes. should she choose to take on mental scars, she strips the individual of their memory and instead takes it for herself for all eternity. physical injuries become scars upon her and she is forced to carry the pain and burden upon her body and isolate herself outside of her physical form until she's healed herself, but it always scars. her healing period ranges and, should the injury be bad enough, she may have to discard her physical form and live as her spirit form until she is well enough to create a new body.

SHAPESHIFTING: as mentioned, she's a spirit and therefore can go between physical and spirit forms. her spirit form is a giant silhouette of pure light. when in this form, she can't make physical contact with objects and cannot speak in a traditional sense. she is only able to communicate by speaking with people through their minds. she can also change her size, though she struggles with it on occasion, mostly because of her wings.

SILVER TOUNGE: with just her words, she's able to put someone in a state of intense peace and euphoria. it's used to help make people feel more comfortable and safe through their transition between life and what comes after. she helps people "see their life flash before their eyes", allowing them to avoid fear and uncertainty in death. it can also be used at any other time, but she'd rather not (unless it's to get her students to attend class.)

Weakness:

BOUND BY HUMAN(OID) WILL: jophiel is bound to the will of those she means to help. this means she cannot act outside of the demands of humanity (and those on it's outskirts). as a spirit, she cannot act upon her own will because she has none (in a traditional sense). no matter how much she wants to do something, or not do something, if she is not called upon for it, she cannot act.

UNABLE TO FEEL: she cannot love in a traditional sense. all of humanity are like her children who she works to protect and keep safe, so humans aren't exactly her type. when it comes to other creatures, while the same sentiment doesn't necessarily apply, she cannot express emotions like love or even like in a romantic sense. she also can't express things like anger, fear, or dissatisfaction. she's rather one note -- only able to feel what she embodies.

MORTALITY: jophiel is immortal --- but not in the typical ways. her physical form can be killed and she can be forced into her spirit form for extended period of time, even centuries. she is able to come back, eventually, but the longer she spends as a her spiritual self, the more disconnected she becomes.

Personality Shift (are they darker, softer, weirder?): jophiel, unlike jumi, is full of compassion to a self-sacrificing degree. the passion within jumi cannot exist within jophiel, for she is only here to serve and protect others. maternal in nature, jophiel takes on all the pain and suffering of the world, without expressing any of her own. she holds a warm smile upon her face, the universe in her eyes, and the world upon her shoulders. she embodies what jumi wishes she could be -- someone who feels at home amongst others, and jumi embodies what jophiel (unknown even to herself) wishes she could be; her own person.

Motivation (blend in, burn the world down, protect someone, seize the stage): she exists to help others --- literally. she is the embodiment of safety, salvation, and deliverance; born from the first cry of an infant. to keep humanity safe and when she can't, help them pass on in a way that eases their pain and worry. as long as their is pain and suffering the world, she will be there to make it all go away.

🕷️ SECTION III — The Blackout Effect

Do they remember the original HYDE? Or believe they’ve always lived here?: jophiel holds the memories of many others --- hyde feels like those. distant, painful memories that others wanted nothing more than to forget. she knows she's lived many lives across many centuries, but never as a mortal being. perhaps she's begun to merge the memories of her worldly children with her own in an attempt to better connect with them.

Any glitch-visions / lingering memories?: there are moments she feels a particular twinge in her heart when she recalls them, and sometimes she finds herself gazing in the mirror at a version of herself that looks back with a hardened expression that she wishes she could heal. she reaches her fingers towards the mirror, hoping to connect with her and take her suffering, only to be met with the cold glass.

A rumor whispered about them in the dorms. her long history is well-known, and documented, within the walls of hyde. some believe and whisper amongst themselves that if you stare into her eyes for long enough you can gain visions of your past lives within the galaxy of her gaze with holds every iteration of the lives you've lived across time. if you were to ask her, she'd simply tilt her head and ask if that's what you truly desire.

seungho's sitting backwards in his chair like this is formal interview, not a tutoring session. knees splayed, varsity jacket half-off his shoulder, quite truly the embodiment of someone who's never taken anything seriously in his life. just lucky, some say. elbows rest lazily on the backrest, pencil tapping against his lip in a rhythm only he finds entertaining. he eyes narrow in mock contemplation, a dramatic pause that feels rehearsed. "so… if johnny has four apples," seungho begins, with that slow, documentary narrator cadence, "why's he got so many apples, though? like… does he sell them? is he a farmer? or just weirdly obsessed with fiber?"

he glances up at jumi then, dead serious, like he's just exposed a fatal flaw in her math problem solving skills. "back home in new jersey," he says, proudly? "we never trusted a man with that many apples. guy like that;s up to something. tax evasion, maybe. or like… apple laundering."

the corner of his mouth twitches, waiting for jumi to crack and bust out laughing. he leans back, chair teetering just enough to make them both nervous, grin stretching wider when it creaks under him. "anyway, miss tutor," he drawls, twirling the mic/pencil on his hand, "where were we? oh right. me being terrible at basic arithmetic. thrilling stuff. don't suppose there's extra credit for charm, huh?"
