bohyun can't help but scrunch up her nose because while yejun speaks the truth, she's still disappointed in the choice of song they've been given. "well, at least it gives me the opportunity to act all cute and charm the viewers," she states with a chuckle.

"there's not much challenging about it. i got a nice line, though. one that'll make people remember and love me." with that, she gave a silly wink to yejun, mimicking what she'll be doing on stage later. truthfully, she hasn't been paying too much attention to the trends these days, so she just nods as she listens to what yejun has to say.

"yeah, that's what seems to be selling well. i mean, look how well girl next door did with that sort of sound." she shrugs before running a hand through her hair out of slight frustration. "guess i really shouldn't be complaining, huh? since i'm one of the chosen few that get to even stand on stage!"

"no complaints," yejun agrees, smiling in return. "except its always better to speak aloud about how you feel... to friends at least." complaining to the people in charge? there's a chance that could backfire completely in their faces. "i feel like even after debut, there's a chance that the idols still have zero say in what music they want to do. please at least give people a chance to choose or veto a horrible stage name though."

"and for some reason, fandoms love to see trainees or new idol groups debut all wholesomely.. especially for the girls, right?" maybe that's why they went with that song choice and not with anything more 'girl crush'. even then, yejun didn't think that was pushing anything - didn't groups want to show all different sides to them? then again, it's not like he was any expert at this. "so speaking of if you did have a choice... what type of song would you have preferred to do?"

yeonseok has spent nearly half of his life trained in the art of self-defense: jump kicks and hand strikes, joint locks and throws. motion. redirection. control. — so when this irritable stranger reaches down to chance a look behind his collar, his body moves almost of its own accord, flooded with the adrenaline. heartbeat echoing in his ears. in an instant, he wraps one of his hands around the stranger’s wrist. twists it and pulls him close. too close for comfort, eye to eye, nose to nose, free arm pressed cleanly against the jut of the other male’s clavicle.

“… why didn’t you just say so?” he asks, more out of curiosity than judgment. “i’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

he releases him, then, after a beat. gets up and off his knees with a long-suffering sigh. reluctant, indisposed, like he’s the one being subject to some undue punishment and not, well, … the other way around. “you don’t have to imply that a tighter fit doesn’t suit me. firstly, it’s not nice. secondly, ’s not true.”

now standing at his full height, he allows his eyes to skip across the stranger’s face, to observe him. contemplate him. “been curious to know what kinda person would willingly buy something this ugly. … but i guess that’s you, then.”

"...i'm glad something this ugly hasn't tarnished either one of our images." the way the other has this magical way with words that has him irritated at the maximum capacity, but it doesn't help that he's also carrying it on. call him sensitive. ( seriously though, yejun's not usually this easily irritable. it must be the sweater. the cursed sweater. maybe he ought to relinquish it or something -- he doesn't know. )

"the one i'm fated to meet... who would have thought. over this ugly sweater." this isn't quite the olive branch that he was supposed to drop, yejun admits internally. his foot remains stilted over the pieces from the game that the sweater thief was playing. "tradesies?" yejun reaches down to collect said pieces.

"one man's treasure is another's trash, but i can't tell if that applies more to you or me, all things considered." yejun clears his throat and takes a step back. its not just anyone that can carry off a shrek-shaded hue after all - he's not being egotistical here. it probably doesn't even include him in that equation.

would you believe that i got sick at the beginning of february, was ok for like 3 days and then got sick with the flu ?? anyways, i'm hoping this is my comeback story but i am down to plot if you are down to plot ! yejun sometimes wonders how he got here. but it's not a shock that he ended up auditioning off a whim, only to spiral whilst actually beginning his training schedules. what started off as empty pages with notes in his head, and possible lyrics and compositions slowly began to form actual possibilities. rejection and failures? yejun had to grow thick skin, fast. it's a good thing that he already doesn't falter too hard when he flops, considering he's flopped through so many side jobs before he signed. but god, if it doesn't sting! his thumbs fidget every time a coach stares and scrutinizes down his musical scraps that seem to improve but don't quite make the mark. his body is tired but improving in stamina from constant practice and lack of sleep. this is the life he signed up for when he passed auditions. all stemming from an out of the blue discussion with jaeyi back in the day when they wore their matching diner uniforms. how quaint.

even with all the setbacks and growth, yejun finds it hardest to deal with trying to sing while dancing or running. yea his stamina has improved but he wasn't the best baseline singer to begin with. the lessons were pulling their weight for sure, but damn, if he wasn't embarrassed the first time he tried to sing a single line while on the treadmill. back to the drawing board. instead of focusing on things that he could distract himself with, such as the skillsets where his areas weren't so rough, yejun knew he had to start paying attention to his vocal control and stability. otherwise, he knew that the assessments would always know how to sus out his weaknesses. that's what they were there for - for him to take advantage of the criticism (constructive, yes), and work towards being a better trainee that did not lag behind. he surely wasn't going to improve by doing what was lazy. and hey, if he looks back at all of his scribbles in the last year, he's pretty happy with some of his melodies and lines that he may be able to utilize and implement one day. one day.

"look, i'm not complaining, per se, but i feel like there could've been a better song to showcase our skills over gee, you know?"

they had just wrapped up their final run-through before mma in a couple of days, and bohyun can't help but feel that the song choice was off, especially knowing what girlnextdoor had in store for their next comeback. was this really the best way to show the potential of all of them?

"i feel like you guys got the better end of the stick. though, your idol may have been cooler," she admits with a shrug. bohyun could understand the why behind soda pop being chosen, with how well the brighter concepts are being received and all, but she still thinks it's a little cheesy.

letting out a sigh, she kicked off her shoes, quickly changing into the pair of slippers she always had on her. "guess i shouldn't be complaining since i'll be standing on stage anyway, right?"

"but gee is timeless," yejun says loosely back, having contemplated about the two song choices for some time now. "it seems they wanted to stay away from girl and boy crush this time around and go much more... light. energetic. youthful." he releases a breath of air he didn't realize he'd been holding in, subconsciously. looking at the choreography it looks like gee had a lot of feet shuffling, and soda pop had a lot of shoulder shrugging. hm. "did you at least get one of adlibs or some of the more challenging lines?"

the truth is, he isn't even use to wearing so much colour, when the company went over their prospect outfits - but it's not about what the trainee, or even idol wants, but what the label wants for them. the idea of debuting and being stuck with some ugly hairstyle seems to be more and more of a possibility, although it wasn't quite as bad as the first to third gen days, if he can admit aloud.

"anything to be closer to debut, but if we complain, it's alright in private. we can always complain, otherwise we might be too tightly wound up once the going gets tough," yejun laughs, sighing again. "i've heard that the bright, fun concepts seem to sell well. it must be the same audience that loves it when people do... aegyo."

minhyun is midway through folding fabric when the knock comes, and he looks up with a small smile that grows the moment he recognizes yejun. “oh—yejunie,” he says, excitement softening his voice, already gentler than it was earlier, when nothing on his sketchbook's newest pages had felt worth keeping. he sets the fabric aside with care, palms lingering a second longer than necessary as if to keep the thought intact. his posture opens as his gaze flicks to the drinks. “you always time it right,” he adds with a low laugh, reaching for the cup meant for him and taking a sip before speaking again. “thanks for remembering my mortal enemy—still don’t know how you can drink that with a straight face.”

as yejun moves further inside, minhyun’s attention drifts to the way the fabric falls on him. his fingers twitch before he smooths a wrinkle at the shoulder—an old habit he doesn’t bother apologizing for when it’s directed at people he’s comfortable with; he knows the younger is probably used to it by now. he also notices the way yejun’s clothes drape over his body carries a certain heaviness, the instinct to ask are you okay? rising and settling just as quickly. instead, he turns toward one of the racks in hopes to clear his mind for the time being.

“i can’t tell you exactly what it’s for, but help me choose?” he says, pulling two pieces free. “this one’s reliable—pretty, and you don't have to think about it once you're onstage.” the fabric holds its shape beneath his fingers. the other drapes looser through his hands. “this one breathes when they move. beautiful, just not great at following rules.” he exhales, almost fond, glancing at yejun. he knows it wouldn’t be an issue for experienced performers—but he isn’t acquainted with the one who’ll be wearing it. “ignore the logistics. pick the one you like more.”

"mortal enemy..." yejun's eyes cannot help but lilt as he laughs. so dramatic! but he'd probably feel the same in other circumstances with specific foods or drinks. "shh, it might hear you," he holds out his hand, covering his green drink before he sets it down out of the way. being in here already clears his mind in a way, being out of the hustle and bustle of the training halls and practice rooms. it's different. the energy, there's something he can't quite put his finger on... yejun's eyes track minhyun's movements out of intrigue and well - this isn't his territory and he's kindly intruding.

"ohhhh, spoiler but spoiler-free," yejun says jokingly as he moves closer to stand by the stylist, looking at the fabrics. he's no expert, so he's thankful for the disclaimers and reassurances as he tilts his head from left to right repeatedly. "mmmm. i know you said to ignore it but i'm always a fan of breathable... especially if someone is supposed to wear it multiple times or for longer times. but when you say its a rebel - how annoying is she going to be?" his lips purse and he reaches out to lightly touch the fabric between his fingers, as if it would make a difference. "as in, is it going to be annoying for you to work with or the wearer. or both, perhaps?"

it's interesting that even hyun doesn't get a whole look into what the concepts are all the time, such as in this scenario. to not get the full picture while delivering could be tough. "i like the finicky one more unfortunately, but not if it's going to be a pain in the behind for you to actually deal with it..."

it’s not that easy, she wants to say. from years of building herself up and from the weight she still feels on her shoulders, she’s used to diminishing her wants for something else of more value. jaeyi knows, though, that yejun is somebody who understands what that translates to. nobody else she knows picks up these shifts at the dead of the night, so it’s really no use arguing with him. “i know,” she responds, pride tugging at her heart due to the mention of her parents. “no, wait, we’ll sing a duet. what song should we sing?” “maybe that duet will tell me if you’re cut out for any artist stuff,” she continues. “not that i know what real talent sounds like, obviously. but i think i have the skills to know if a voice sounds good,” and if he does, she imagines walking side by side with him into the convenience store near some company, complaining about instructors rather than customers. wouldn’t that be nice? “i think it’s like winning the lottery a little bit. one out of, like, fifty? think i could beat those odds, yejun?”

he makes her laugh then, and she pushes him away. “oh my god. i haven’t even thought about that,” she swats at his shoulder lightly. “can you really imagine me with pink hair? wait, we should both dye our hair some crazy color. you should do green. with a buzz cut. i think you’d fit it.”

"half and half hair. i heard that's in right now. we can both be pink and green. buzz cut is kind of killing my vibe though but i can't knock it until i've tried it, i suppose..." his facial expression does a 0% match to his words, the lack of commitment truly apparent. there's a flashback of one of sia's wigs when she was truly viral as an artist globally that comes in images in yejun's mind right now and he does his best to dispel that bubble.

"a good old classic like... candy in my ear." the way that is the first song he can think of probably is already a bad omen, but it's only after that leaves his mouth that some other more compelling songs come to mind. "or... any of akmu's songs- might be better. but y'know. candy in my ear might be more eye-catching." yejun clears his throat then smiles bluntly at jaeyi, thankful for how quiet it is during these hours. they were keeping their voices low enough where that one singular pair wouldn't get irate at them for chatting. but can anyone blame them? day in and day out of doing this job could only be mundane during the graveyard hours. it isn't as bad as it sounds, but that's what yejun thinks the customers might think.

"i think the chances might be better than winning the lottery... certainly it has to be, right? who even knows anyone that's won the lottery? in contrast to... at least knowing of someone who knows someone who became a trainee at a larger company....?" even if it didn't guarantee debut. he exchanges a look when the customer raised their hand, and he walks over, only wanting a simple drink refill. hm. seems like they wouldn't be leaving any time soon.

it is probably factual that there are few places that yejun feels comfortable within the vicinity, and one of the places happens to be in @hyunhd's workplace. studio? office? room? the fascinating realm where creativity happens and yejun feels blanketed in coziness? yea. being here leaves him in a state of contentness in a way that cannot be found in most other corners. yea, yejun has been settling in. but here, he's settled. and this week has felt truly so long and painful, that all he wants to do is curl up into a ball and forget everything he's learned this week. instead, he tries to be useful and up his social battery by visiting someone he feels like he hasn't seen in quite a long duration of time.

knocking quickly as a greeting, he pops his head in to ensure that stylist is here first before closing the door behind him. "hi hyun, glad you're here today because i've had takeaway for two drinks. don't worry, the matcha isn't yours," he snickers, taking out the green one for himself before taking a seat down as he takes a look around. everything in here was always such a good representation of the other's creative bubble. and it looked different from the last time he visited. "not sure if you're allowed to share any spoilers but if you wanted to share what's been keeping you busy or your latest project, i'd be all ears. or eyes."

yeonseok narrows his eyes in trepidation. did this guy not hear a single word of what he said, or did he just choose not to? ( either way, admittedly, it’s kind of impressive. )

“mm, what do i look like to you, the home shopping channel?” he returns, both eyebrows raised, an incredulous laugh stalled in the back of his throat. his words carry some amount of bite to them, but for the most part, nothing about this abrupt line of questioning bothers him, really. it’s far more entertaining than crawling around on his hands and knees, looking for bright-colored pieces of plastic. he folds his long legs underneath himself and looks up to offer the stranger a generous smile. “ ‘s the color, isn’t it. — kind of… like, groundbreaking? revolutionary? unconventionally unattractive?” he darts a look down at his sleeve, then raises his arm to consider the fabric side-by-side with the stranger’s face. “could you pull it off? sure. i think so. maybe? unfortunately, y' happen to be shit out of luck.”

yeonseok frowns, then. he idly fiddles with the stones in his hand as he continues, “let’s just say i got this thing used. can’t point you in any direction if you want it yourself.” in his periphery, he can see kwanghyun gesturing wildly, as if to say: WHAT ARE YOU DOING? so his attention returns to the floor. “… now, can you move your leg. i’m… kinda busy, here?”

considering it was clear that it was the other person in this conversation, aka NOT HIM!!!, that had clearly been window shopping with a five finger discount of some sort, his mouth drops at the audacity. so much was happening all at once and yejun barely had the time to blink five times and respond before his mind caught up with his body. his mouth closes. drops again. then closes back up. "uh yea, i would say that i am shit out of luck because i could swear that exact one you're wearing belongs. to. me!"

dude - 1, yejun - 0, at the utter lack of composure he was having in this situation.

reaching down, he picks up the object under his foot and defiantly holds it in his palm, not bothering to hand it over to either of the two boys playing at their game. "you know lost and founds exist. do people actually have to start writing their names on the label of their items?"

yejun has half the mind to reach over and look at the sizing on that sweater right now, but even with the measurement of said eyeballs, he could tell they would have probably worn the same size. even so, clearly some sort of thing up there compels his hand to move and physically reach behind to peek at the sizing. "that is mine! don't you think it's a little small on you anyway?"

setting: a hip little bookstore café in hongdae. the bell above the door rings and hanbin almost regrets coming. it's totally loud, crowded, but then he spots yejun by the back shelves, and it's stupid how quickly hanbin's shoulders drop. like a familiar shape just clicked back into place. he slips into the seat across from him, tapping the table gently with his knuckle so he doesn't startle him too hard. "hey you," he says, the word coming out in a quiet rush. "sorry i'm late. i got distracted looking at a shelf of books i'm never gonna read."

he pulls the little café menu toward himself then stops halfway, tilting his head. "okay," he says, though it sounds more amused than serious, "do you actually order things here based on the taste or based on what looks good in photos? anyway, it's nice catching up with you," he adds, softer now, his thumb rubbing the edge of the menu. "everything's been… a lot lately. so this is kinda perfect."

he clears his throat, shakes it off, and taps the menu with a grin that finally shows. "anyway. pick something for me. i trust your judgment more than mine."

doomscrolling is a horrible hobby, he's determined, if he can even call it a 'hobby'. despite arriving earlier than the original meeting time, it passed by in a fleeting moment, halting at hanbin's declaration of his arrival. "oh you're fine! it's good to see you again. i think it's been..." yejun trails off at trying to think about when the last time they met was- "far too long too even recount. so. lets make it a shorter break in between meetings, yeah?"

"its got to be both, but i do like it to at least look good enough for a photo. camera eats first," he rolls his eyes, mostly at himself. it's a habit he can't get out of, snapping it for later, only later never actually comes to fruition. "but don't you worry your pretty lil' head, i'll go order something for the both of us." disappearing for a moment to the counter, he orders two drinks that he favours, but one is tea-based, and the other one espresso-based. if hanbin had a preference for one, yejun would be fine with whichever was left over. after paying and taking a seat, "if both drinks are a fail, we'll just order something else. but what's bothering you?" shoulders hunching as he leans in closer, attention all focused on hanbin. "i'm all ears. and you know i'd never judge."

NA KWANGHYUN IS ON HIS FIFTH LEVEL OF GONGGI WHEN HE ATTEMPTS A CLAP TOSS AND SUBSEQUENTLY BATS AWAY ALL FIVE OF HIS PLASTIC STONES. yeonseok, who’d been watching the endeavor half-asleep, blinks himself awake as soon as he hears the ensuing clatter. he’s wearing the abandoned sweater he’d picked up ( — okay, stole! ) from the 19th floor last friday, and despite it’s hideously muddy color, he’s found it to be unexpectedly comfortable. shockingly so. he rubs the sleep from his eyes with one of its sleeves.

kwanghyun says, “dude…” yeonseok says, “what, man.” “seok-ah… i lost all the stones…”

and so. this is how gu yeonseok meets kim yejun. he’s on his knees, crawling on the floor, because some moron attempted a clap toss without taking his poor motor skills into account. yeonseok continues forward from his lower vantage point until he hits something solid and startles. it’s a knee. he stares at it in confusion before rolling his eyes upward to regard its owner. a short pause. then, “… hey! seen a gonggi stone around here?” yeonseok looks down at his hands to take stock of what he already has. four stones. kwanghyun has found zero. “still… missing the red one. can you move your leg.”

the odd sensation that tingles like a 'spidey-sense' had been bothering him for some time. but beholder of said tingle could not recall what it was that was triggering this. something he was forgetting... but it remain forgotten as he went about his week. ( you know, that thing where it doesn't hit you until it hits you, or oh, that thing you lost being found in the last area that you looked because duh! where else!? ) and despite him following his routines and schedules, and backtracking a little - he was none the wiser... until. so much happens simultaneously as something pings towards his direction. yejun's nose crinkles as he felt around with his shoe and he was about to pick whatever was under his shoe but there's someone down there and his eyes meet someone he was not familiar with.

but there was something on said person that caught his eye even more. ( yes, it's at this point the radar pinged so hard, he was almost knocked off-kilter. ) whatever stayed under his shoe stayed there for now as he contemplated his next move. he moves his foot, sliding what might be this gonggi stone away with him ( maybe, maybe! ) and he glances towards this guy who looks to be wearing the article of clothing that had been mysteriously throwing him off all week. a strange in between of chartreuse and mustard that looked oddly unflattering on everyone, a la anti-sisterhood of the traveling pants but maybe the brotherhood of ugly cardigans or something. nobody else would willingly buy something in this shade, right?

"where did you buy that sweater from?"

despite her bubbly attitude around the building, bohyun was quite serious when it came to music. of course, the whole training thing could be a bore at times, and she wished to run away from it all. however, it also gave her a place and the time to write music whenever she wanted to.

even now, she's humming a melody to herself, trying her best to jot it down before she completely forgets it when yejun interrupts her. taking out her earphones, she looked up at him with a smile before leaning over to look at what looked like an empty notebook.

"huh, i can tell," she stated with a slight snort. bohyun talked like this, but she was still going to help him out anyway. "okay, tell me what you have in mind. a theme? a story? or maybe even a melody where we could attach lyrics to?" she was always open to figuring out music with others, but it'd be nice to have something to work with first.

at her question, yejun blinks blankly at her a few times, dragging his hands across his notebook and glancing back down and up, as if it would spout out a response of some sort. that would be a key problem, wouldn't it? he was trying to draw something out of a rock. or too much, too broadly, without focus. "i... think i am approaching it too widely without any specifics. that would be problem one that your question was already able to point out for me. there's no theme."

at least he did have some sort of melody. it was quite basic considering it was his first few attempts at much of anything, but a start was a start, and they truly did have to begin from somewhere, even if it was possibly from the very bottom. he's not ashamed or anything, he's simply aware, but also willing to learn from the experience and get some feedback. "here is the beat i sort of have started. i was trying to go for alternative pop, without sounding too dance-floor-edm...." he knows there is room for improvement. yejun supposes that this territory is all new to him. he should have stuck to choreographing instead if he wanted to go with what was more instinctual to him.

"if i would go anywhere with the theme, i was thinking along the lines of something hopeful like a chance encounter, and sort of feelings and thoughts around that." the melody was mostly in the major keys, and stayed relatively light. "i am open to all feedback, including extremely harsh ones. i know i'm new to this." and he could use all the help he could get.

it’s nice listening to yejun ramble like this. the ambience of the karaoke in the background makes it less comfortable, sure, but they’re still working. jaeyi’s traded her high expectations for something else a long time ago. “it’s a little stupid.” she tries to laugh it off, a soft hum escaping her. it’s only her parents who really know. there’s a tentativeness on sharing this that runs so deep, not just with yejun, like she’s scared of the response. “there’s this place that has singing and dancing classes before you audition for companies or something. my parents let me go,” she pauses, because she’s proud of their support and embarrassed about it at the same time. it leaves jaeyi no room for error. “i think i’m doing pretty well. i haven’t reached out to anywhere yet, but i really like it.” yejun makes a joke, and she smiles. she can’t imagine her face being anywhere near etude house, but she guesses that the guy makes her dream big.

“sure,” she nods. “what about you? do you like things like this? do you want your face next to mine on posters or something?” it’s meant to be an absentminded joke, but her mind wanders here, and it conjures up an image of something now. something tangible. and it’s a little foolish to want someone who understands her when she starts anew, but she disregards it.

"we're young. don't be so hard on yourself." considering he could barely hold a job for longer than a few months, having something to aspire to could be a good distraction from all of... this. yejun's eyes flip to her in interest, the little spidey-senses subconsciously tingling out of intrigue. "i think that's awesome your parents support the idea. that's typically the first battle... but now i think i might have to drag you out to noraebang so i can hear you sing," he laughs lightly, not wanting to annoy the two patrons nor have the cook in the back complain ( not that they would - but they could. )

"i've never... quite thought about it ever before. sometimes i think that lifestyle could be so cool but i don't know if i have the vocal cords for it. it sounds like it could be fun if i ever got in." if singing in his room or bathroom could even count for anything. his features contort at the idea of his face being up on a poster next to jaeyi's. wouldn't that be crazy, now? but he's also heard of some of those groups falling victim to the traps of the industries. "what do you think the chances of getting into the big companies are?"

"what about the wild hairstyles that some people get? imagine. all of your hair chopped off, or maybe extensions, but all a funky colour. now i can't imagine that," yejun trails off as he squints his eyes at her, fully turning towards her and trying to imagine it. "blonde? pink? orange. red!"

being a trainee has allowed him access to more resources, and being around people who were like-minded or more passionate than him... it created a recipe for yejun to also feel emboldened to take hold of his own passion and career potential. but without much preparations before getting into the company, that may be his own fault. there were others that had such severe drive to do this and aim for this career. and he? mainly followed his friend here through auditions. not to say that he wouldn't make something out of it -- but it's not quite the same.

he sits here with a notebook in front of him, some ideas here and there, but the words weren't truly resonating or connecting. yejun's trying. there were scribbles everywhere and lines that drew to another thought. but only that once in a blue moon lighting bolt of inspiration would actually lend itself to a page worthy of reading. tapping away at his notebook, the boy gets distractred, eyes dragging around and glancing about at a few other trainees around the area. only to spot a familiar individual which he feels compelled to say hello to, because - procrastination is the name of this game today. gathering his notebook and headphones, he plods over to where bohyun is and sits down across from her, hoping she won't ask him to leave her be.
