A submitted question... share your thoughts!
What would elphie’s , Galindas and fyiero’s favorite food be ?
There’s something I noticed about “No One Mourns the Wicked”… Glinda refers to Elphaba as “you know who”. I feel that she did that because she couldn’t bare to call her the “Wicked Witch” after watching her die. Actually, throughout the whole song, she never says it’s the witch who’s wicked. She could be thinking of Madame Morrible and the Wizard.
imagine glinda creating her own private memorial/grave for elphaba because no one else wants to give her one
imagine glinda putting a lily on her best friend’s grave every day
imagine glinda sitting at elphaba’s grave and just talking to it when she’s had a bad day
imagine glinda not being able to defend her best friend to the people who condemned her
imagine glinda not being able to mourn the death of her best friend publicly
imagine glinda who’s trying to keep herself and Oz together even though she thinks elphaba and fiyero, her two closest friends in the world, are dead
imagine glinda who thinks if she had treated boq better at school then he would still have a heart today
imagine glinda who mourns for nessarose as much as she does elphaba because no one else will mourn either of them
imagine glinda with the weight of the world on her shoulders but learnt how to have the brightest smile in all of Oz
On nights when Frex would beat Elphaba and send her to her room without food, Nessa would sneak up after hours with a plate she stole from the kitchen, and the two would stay up together. All the servants and mansion staff knew, but none told Frex, allowing the sisters their time together.
Elphaba: I saved him.
Boq: You fucked up a perfectly good Lion is what you did. Look at him. He's got anxiety.
Oh My God guys I just realised something horrible. It’s horrible.
Ok so in the musical, during No-One mourns the Wicked, one of Glinda’s lines is ‘and she had a mother, as so many do!’ And the audience laughs, because Glinda is being her usual bubbly playful self. Of course she had a mother, everyone has a mother. It’s so obvious, Glinda didn’t need to point it out.
But to what extent did Elphaba have a mother? If you have the background knowledge of the book, you know that Melena took drugs from the moment of Elphaba’s birth to detach from the reality of having a freak of a child. She was an alcoholic, and she had no care for Elphaba at all. She joked about drowning her year old infant, and dies when Elphaba is around 8 years old. And in the musical it isn’t much better; Nessarose can only be a few years younger than Elphaba. Elphaba was probably about 3 when Melena died.
Elphaba never had a mother at all, and Glinda knew that. But she makes light of it, and maybe it’s because it’s Elphaba’s secret. Maybe the only secret Elphaba ever told her, during the ‘popular’ scene. It’s her little bit of Elphaba that no-one else knows about. And she promised never to try and clear her name, so there’s no point in sharing that information. It’s just a token of Elphaba’s trust that nobody else had, and even in her death she wants to keep Elphaba’s trust. Even if that means making light of the worst thing that happened to Elphaba, the thing that haunted her all of her life. She powers through it, makes jokes about it, for her friend.
Elphaba got mad when Boq asked her help to talk to Galinda because she had a crush on him, not on her. That’s why she was always with him, hugging him and kissing his cheek for no apparent reason.
Whenever Elphaba smiles a toothy shy smile because of something Galinda says, Galinda falls in love all over again.
Poppies as a sleep inducer
Poppies were used as a sleep inducer all the time in Munchinkinland. It’s where Elphaba got the idea to use them as a surpessant for that wretched farm girl in the first place in the first place.
Elphaba Boq, and Nessa’s speaking voices
Elphaba and Nessa have parents of Gilkin descent, so they usually speak in this upperclass accent, not to put on airs but because it was simply how they were raised. Boq, on the other hand, was raised by common Munchkinland farmers, making his own accent more noticeable around the upperclass Shiz crowd (particuarly a Miss G. Upland).
biq! do u realize who that is!! thats fiyero tigelaar– that well-meaning, beautiful arjiki prince who’s at shiz to do the best he can for his people!!
Standing at something around 175cm, Elphaba is taller than everyone she knows, her father, Nessa, all the Munchikins and she's almost two heads taller than Galinda. Her height only made her feel more the aberration until she meets Fiyero, who stands at almost 200cm and is basically a giant, which make her feel almost normal and a little short.
Elphaba: He could be that boy
Elphaba: But I'm not that girl
Elphaba: Because I'm gay for Glinda
Do you ever think about how scared Elphaba would have been during Defying Gravity? Like, sure she’s inspired and passionate and ready to kick ass from the Emerald City to Munchkinland. But do you ever wonder if she was in that moment really terrified too? And maybe that’s why she asked Glinda to go with her. Because everything was chaotic and scary and her future was so uncertain, but if Glinda was next to her then nothing would ever be that bad. And do you ever think about all the potential Elphaba saw in Glinda? Because she wouldn’t have asked her to come with her just to be nice, or even just to make herself feel better. She knew that Glinda could be powerful and smart and brave. She knew that the two of them could do anything. But Glinda couldn’t see that about herself. For the first time in her life, she doubted herself. So she stepped back and didn’t go with Elphie. Do you ever think about how totally and unfairly heartbreaking this entire scene is? Because I do. A lot.
added bonus: in the book it was the other way around. when elphaba wanted to go into hiding, glinda begged her to let her come and be a part of her life, and support her, because she knew what was happening in Oz was bad and that if elphaba got herself involved she could be hurt, and glinda didnt want her to be alone. and then, elphaba kissed her, told her she loved her, and then hardened herself. she cut glinda off and insisted on being alone. As evidence by the rest of the series, both of them regretted that moment the rest of their lives, but especially glinda, who never stopped thinking of her dear friend and what could have been years later.
Fiyero and Elphaba had a daughter along with Liir. When Fiyero goes to her dance recitals, he sometimes tears up because his daughter is taking after him.
