Feeling inspired is probably one of the greatest feelings that i can think of. Inspiration hits you and its as if suddenly everything you've ever wondered about makes sense. As a musician inspiration is the exact thing that drives us. Sometimes we listen to The Song Remains The Same and the only thing on our minds is recreating Jimmy Page's tone or learning the solo from No Quarter. The way that Zeppelin turned a dark and mystical song from Houses of The Holy into a 12 minute trip of emotion and dynamic is exactly the kind of thing that makes me pick up my Les Paul and jam away for hour upon hour, finding new licks and scales and feelings within this improv jam that has no structure and no linear path. Its just a constant flow of artistic expression that you as a player feel connected to. Now take that same feeling without the inspiration of just previously listening to an amazing jam or song. When you pick up your guitar it probably feels different. You sit and jam for a minute or two. Nothing really special comes out. Usually you feel stagnant. You turn ur amp off to avoid further dissapointment. The point i am trying to make here is that inspiration is what drives us. When i look at this picture above, i see Paul McCartney trying to find his own inspiration to write and record a song. This picture is from the RAM recording sessions in 1971 i believe. And someone like Paul McCartney doesnt exactly need help writing a song and making it something special. Hes proven that since 1963. I recently have felt so inspired by Paul's writing. Theres some kind of magic about it. If you break down his music.. its generally quite simple. His lyrics dont really convey a special meaning like say.. a Rush song would. He doesnt play 15 minute blues jams that show any kind of virtuoso-ness about him.. he just writes songs with some pretty amazing chord progressions and sings his heart out. And there is something about it that only on an artistic level can we understand.. or maybe i just havent found the words yet. So my message to all musicians.. keep searching for inspiration. It will always be there. And most importantly, listen. We all know theres 2 ways to listen to music. You can listen to music... Or you can feel the music. I find my inspiration from guys like Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, and Paul McCartney everytime i listen to them. It keeps me goimg thru all my troubles and stressful times. Its a release. Our art is our way of expression. Live what you do. Love what you do. Feel inspired.
