The Vertex in Synastry and Transits (Part 1)
Planetary conjunctions and oppositions to the vertex in synastry can indicate karmic and/or fated meetings with another. The Vertex acts as a magnetic point in the chart that ‘pulls’ towards it encounters in relation to the house and sign it’s located in the natal chart.
These encounters can cause a ‘turning point’ in ones life where the interaction with the planetary person to the Vertex person may shift their perspective and/or course of action in life.
*Note: Not all vertex connections are profoundly significant. Some may last years with another, while others may come and go in matter of minutes. A grand or subtle shift in ones perspective and even mood is often manifested from these interactions.
Because the Vertex is associated with external or outside influences and encounters that come into our own lives, the Vertex (Vx) acts like an auxiliary Descendant, therefore an important point to regard in synastry. The Vertex being an electrical magnetic axis in the chart draws in people and experiences to it.
People’s planets who conjunct the Vertex of another often seem to come from a place beyond our everyday experiences and reality, out of an unexpected encounter, hence the sense of being ‘fated’ and ‘karmic’ in connection is deemed appropriate for these types of relationships.
The House location is where these fated encounters will draw themselves from.
A persons planet conjunct the Vertex (no more than 5° - the closer to 0° the more prominent the connection). The persons planet involved in the synastry conjunction will give further details to the energies they bring out of you and give back. The Vertex person feels the most significant provocation from these contacts.
Planet transits to the Vertex/Anti-Vertex will also draw a person who will bring these energies, traits and lessons in regards to the planet that conjunct the Vertex in transit. Not all Conjunctions to the Vertex may indicate an easy lesson, it primarily indicates lessons around those themes.
Transits to the Vertex often involve events and turning points in relation to interaction with other people, while oppositions (conjunctions to the Anti-Vertex) often manifest events and life changing encounters that are often self involved.
All aspects below are for Conjunctions and Oppositions
Note* Once Vertex lessons are learnt, often the planet person involved may disappear from ones life quite as quickly as they arrived - the primary manifestation of the encounter is to introduce a turning point and change of life course.
(My descriptions are entirely based on MY OWN experiences and understanding. I do not idealise content, and I am honest as to possible experiences manifested due to these Vertex connections).
Depending on the house location of the Vertex in the natal chart, the Sun person will bring a lesson involving the area of the house it’s in.
The Sun person ‘lights up’ this house area of the vertex person and acts as a prominent figure bringing tremendous opportunities of growth in that area of ones life. There can be an instant sense of attraction, as the way the sun person presents and expresses themselves is highly admirable and engaging to the Vertex person. The Vertex person may feel as though the Sun persons vitality is highly magnetic and they may stay close by in wonder as to what the Sun person has to offer them in a relationship and/or interaction. The very essence of who they are encapsulates the Vertex persons subconscious idea of an ideal partner.
There is often a mutual attraction indicated between the two, though they may not always be romantic in their nature.
Transit: The sun conjunct the Vertex will bring events and encounters aimed to brings lessons and interactions in regards to the house and sign located in the chart. Lessons will be learnt around the way you self identify, your ego, how you express yourself, your sense of self worth and self esteem.
Example: Sun transit Vertex in the 8th house (anti Vx 2nd) may bring lessons around how your identity, self worth and ego gets involved in sexual relationships with others. How does the people you have sexual connections with affect your sense of self worth and self esteem? Does sharing your values and the values of others affect your ego and how you express yourself?
The moon person brings a sense of comfort and care to the Vertex person. The Vertex person feels safe and secure around the moon person and there is an exchange of care, nurture and protection for one another. The moon person feels like 'Home’ to the Vertex person, and there may be lessons involving one another’s family, home life, living together and perhaps starting a family together is some of the more major lessons associated with this conjunction. There may be an intuitive connection between the two, where the moon person may be quite receptive to the feelings and moods of the Vertex person. Lessons involved in care, nurture and domestic affairs may be indicated by this conjunction. The first encounter with one another may feel instantly safe and comfortable in each other’s presence.
Transit: A fated encounter from the moon conjunct the Vertex may rely on other planetary involvement in the chart since the moon passes the Vertex on a monthly basis whereby the Vertex is only activated for a brief amount of time. If this transit brings encounters with another, it is highly likely that there was also in transit to the others natal Vertex as the time also, bringing the two together.
The lessons brought by the people in the transit will bring lessons as mentioned above. You will be asked to bring out your more caring, nurturing and gentle side in this connection. Also events and lessons in regards to the home and family may be activated, as well as influential encounters with your mother and/or women.
Example: Vertex in 5th conjunct the moon may bring lessons in relating to a romantic relationship with another that draws out caring and nurturing qualities. How is you sense of security and emotional wellbeing acknowledged in your romantic relationships? How do you care for yourself and your partner? What do you really need in a relationship with another? How does expressing yourself and having fun affect the way you feel?
This can be quite a fun and stimulating connection in synastry, as the Mercury person stimulates your mind, the way you think and speak and may engage in timeless conversations that will leave you thinking about it long after the conversation is over. You instantly feel comfortable and open talking to the Mercury person, and may find them highly engaging in what they have to say. This connection may not stimulate romantic feelings as much, but can bring a sense of a brother or sister like connection. You may have met this person online or your relationship is highly based in a two way flow of communication. The Mercury person may even have something to teach the the Vertex person, changing the way they think about certain things and stimulating new ideas. This connection is often quite lighthearted, unless the Mercury person was attracted to rival and challenge the ideas of the Vertex person. Like the messenger god Hermes, the Mercury person may come and go as quickly as they arrived, simply leaving a message or sparking a new idea before taking off again.
Lessons will be learnt around communication, thoughts, ideas and perhaps short distance travel and siblings.
Transit: Mercury transits to the Vertex may stimulate new ways of communication and a bright spark in ideas and plans. If you experience these ideas - write them down!
Also many people around you may be giving you a message with a very similar connotation. This message will also be important for further karmic growth, and also take their advice, especially if the message you receive is of a common theme. You may be revealed or discover new information or something that you then pursue in learning about. You may learn something new that will help you on your spiritual path. Also events involving technology and short unplanned trips may manifest.
Example: Mercury conjunct the Anti-Vertex in the 2nd house (opposite the Vertex) may bring people giving you ideas of how you can make money. They may encourage you to use your talents to establish a form of income. You may be asked to share your talents and resources with others. How do your values affect the way you think? How can you communicate what you value most to others? What information do you have that you can give to others?
This connection is clearly most focused on in synastry, though there is often more than simply feelings of love and romance, though 'fated/karmic’ relationships are possible with this connection (the time frame of which these relationships last is up to the duration of the turning point of the Vertex person).
The instant romantic attraction you may experience to the Venus person may be incredibly strong. They may be perceived as very beautiful, though you may not have expected to find this person as the type you typically find attractive. The Vertex person will very much want to be close to the Venus person, and it’s possible for romantic connections to manifest at a rapid rate with this Conjunction or opposition. The Venus person can make the Vertex person feel quite valued and appreciated, and an instant friendship can be ignited between the two. It’s even possible that the Venus person comes bearing a gift to the Vertex person. The interaction will affect that way the Vertex person feels in relationships with others, how they socially interact, their definition of what they find attractive, and their sense of self worth, value and self love. Lessons will be learnt in an exchange of love, affection, gifts and friendship. You may even discover something new that you love and enjoy that helps you in your spiritual development.
Transit: Venus to the Vertex can bring sudden lessons around those mentioned above. You may meet someone you instantly find attractive and/or wish to establish a form of relationship with them.
You may unexpectedly receive a gift or make a significant purchase of something you wouldn’t expect that may be a benefit or burden to you in the future. You may also gain (or lose) money. Sudden reveals about love and relationships may come about during this transit.
What do you really find attractive? What are your exceptions when it comes to people your form relationships with? What do you really want in relationships? What do you have to offer others? How did this encounter affect your self worth and values? What are your material possessions really worth?
Example: Venus Conjunct Vertex in 9th house may bring sudden and unexpected encounters with someone from overseas. You may be introduced to a culture you haven’t experienced and you discover you love it so much you plan on visiting the original country for spiritual growth. You may meet a foreign woman who changes your course of life. You may fall in love overseas. You may meet a female spiritual teacher.
Here an instant sexual attraction and possible sexual interactions with the mars person may be initiated. Again, the Vertex person may have not thought that they would feel this way towards someone such as the mars person, or sudden sexual interactions may manifest unexpectedly. There may also be circumstances where the Vertex person comes into conflict with the Mars person, perhaps over and issue primarily involving the location of the Vertex in the chart. The Vertex person may very well have sex with the Mars person also - this may be even more likely if the Vertex is located in the 5th/8th houses. Lessons around sex, aggression, action and conflict may be manifested with this connection.
Transit: The above possible lessons may be involved, and also an event that may include a sudden initiation, conflict or impact may be indicated. Due to the dangerous energies of Mars, it is possible for life changing events due to conflict, aggression, fights, and because mars is involved in weaponry, it may be possible to indicate some form of dangerous interaction with another involving these factors. Car crashes may be indicated if Mercury makes a conjunction to Mars in transit to the Vertex, or fights with a relationship partner if Venus is involved.
On a more positive manifestation, a sudden action may be taken to advance forward on your spiritual life path, as well as encounters which stimulate will power and action of something. There may also be a fated encounter with a male.
Example: Mars Conjunct Vertex in the 6th house may indicate a conflict with an employee that may indicate one or another may possibly lose their job. Other possibilities include sexual interactions with a co-worker that will alter your workplace environment and whether or not you want to stay on the job. You may suddenly take initiative in a work project or task that you didn’t expect to. You may also meet a while at work that makes a sudden change in your life.
