I will plant flowers. I will take up a new hobby. I will read the books I’ve been neglecting. I will scrub the floors and paint my apartment and light tons of candles. I will put my health first. I will let myself trust again. I will explore my city and my planet.
I will, I will, I will. I will get better.
When I wrote this I was in such a dark place: I had fallen out of love while I was being betrayed again and again by the person I lived with, who took it all out of me and gave nothing back. I was stuck in a dead-end job that did not light any fire within me. I no longer enjoyed anything life had to offer. I was wiped out at 22. I was stagnant and unhealthy and so painfully unhappy.
It is now almost two years later and I’m living alone in a cozy, lovely apartment. I’ve painted the walls. I’ve scrubbed the hardwood floors. I’ve grown life through a dozen plants. I light all of the candles all of the time. I read at least five books per month and wake up early to watch the sunrise as I run with my dog (I’m now back up to six miles at a time, six miles per minute, just like I was all those years back). I’m in a grad program that serves my soul every day, and I’m working in the field I always dreamed I’d be in. In the past eight months I have travelled more than I did for years, and for 2017 I am set to visit at least a dozen new countries. Sometimes I do go out with new men, but now I know how to spot red flags like a professional, and I always react immediately and accordingly. I will not allow someone hurt me like he did again, but—mostly importantly— I have learned to trust myself.
Everything got better. It did. It did. It did.
Stop beating yourself up. You’re a work in progress, which means you get there a little bit at a time not all at once.
Adding these to arm day!
Rambling.
I’ve been doing great going to the gym again for the last couple weeks, but this week not so much. I have to remember, my body is sore, it’s okay to rest for a couple of days. Two jobs, one a serving job, is exhausting. It’s okay to take a break. It’s okay to take a break.
I also have been doing better with eating, but I don’t think I’m eating enough calories.
So. No weight loss yet, but I’m going to have a better week next week.
Celebrate the facts. Happy Black History Month!
