"Mary, have you been drinking?" Crewe asked raising an eyebrow. He knew she had, it smelled like she bathed in wine. (hearinginskyblue)

Mary swirled her glass in her hand, the liquid sloshing up against the side. She didn’t know why Frankie had invited all of his bandmates over to their house without consulting her first and she was making no effort to hide her disapproval of their presence. 

“What’s it to you, Crewe?”

Crewe gave her a look of disgust, no point in hiding it. “It’s Three o’clock in the afternoon? Your children are home?” He sighed, why did he even bother bring this up, she never listened to him. Rob took a deep breath in and out, trying to be polite again. “Sorry for dropping by unexpectedly, I need the boys to look over some thing and my apartment is being paint. I would say I hope you understand, but I know you won’t.” Rob wished he had a drink in his hand.

Sometimes, you can get real particular about certain things, and I hate it when you keep us in the studio just cause we don't sound perfect. But it's real nice sharin' a glass of wine with you when we're finally done, just us, where I can finally relax after all that hard work(plus, you're real easy on the eyes). Crewe stared over at Mary for a good minute before speaking, planning to use his words carefully.“I know it does. I have seen the results. It’s not a bother. Are you feeling well?” He said this a rather manner a fact tone but there was more of a gentle tone there as well.

“But he wouldn’t be gone at all if you’d just…” She trailed off, closing her eyes before weakly shaking her head dismissively. “You could have just left him be and he could have kept trying to search for a way out, but at least he’d be at home with me. I mean, Jesus. I’m pregnant again. I’ve done it alone once and I don’t think I can do it again.” She sighed heavily, her resolve seeming to crumble as she buried her face in her hands. “It’s all your fault…”

At this point, something seemed to have finally snapped inside Mary and all of her previous anger had seemed to be converted to pure sadness. She just felt empty as the flames that had just been licking the inside of her stomach seemed to be extinguished. She was tired and arguing had lost it’s appeal. She just wanted Frankie and to sleep. 

Mary felt almost on the verge of tears at this point. Her insides felt as though they’d been twisted up, and a sense of discomfort seemed to settle over her. “I give up. You’re a fucking angel. Is that what you want from me? I didn’t asked to psycho-fucking-analyzed. Maybe I just have a hard time feeling bad for people. It’s not like I don’t, though. I just have to focus on the things in my life first before I can worry about anyone else’s. And having the extra energy to look at other people’s lives and feel bad for them doesn’t always happen. So, excuse me for putting my family first.”

There was so much he could say right now. Words, despite what people said could cut deep. But honestly, he has lost any of his compassion at the moment. Mostly because his mind was running on overdrive. And something hit him, he didn’t have to listen, this all seemed rather intense. He only noticed just now that his fist was clenched. He looked down at it, and quickly stuffed in his hand into his pocket only then did he unclench it. He sighed, even if his body loosened, his eyes still had that dull glow. He was quiet for what felt like ages, before he decided. “You know what, I am, I am done. I have my limits, Mary. You could have been upfront with me right away, instead of holding on to your pride, but you didn’t. Frankly my patience has run out. You, have a nice day, hire a nanny, you can afford to now. I don’t have to take this.” He started to walk away before suddenly deciding to turn around, “Oh and you only wanted your husband to stay small time or local? Despite how much happier it makes him?” He rolled his eyes,” Amazing. The phrase, “For better or for worse” really holds no meaning beyond your own happiness, does it?” With that he made his way back to his car.

“You don’t get it. You don’t have to tell your children that you don’t know when daddy is going to be home. I…I just want him to be home.” She sighed softly, almost seeming to deflate as she admitted what was bothering her. She hated the vulnerability of being so honest. About letting people know how much she actually needed Frankie. “Just…never mind. Forget about it.”

But at Robert’s dig back at her, she hardened. She looked at him blankly, pulling her own pack of cigarettes out of her pocketbook and placed the cigarette against her lips and gripped it between her teeth. Mary pulled out her own lighter, sparking it to life and lighting the end of her cigarette and taking a long drag. 

“Go fuck yourself.” She replied flatly, blowing out a long stream of smoke into Crewe’s face. Despite being a married woman with three children, she couldn’t quite squash the spirit of the nineteen year old girl who’s been arrested for assault of a police officer. She couldn’t make herself respect anyone who insulted her. “I like to save my compassion for my girls or people who deserve it. And most people don’t.”

Crewe normally never looked this serious, it was almost like he was a completely different person. It was bizarre in a way. Crewe widened his stance, as to get a better grounding, his arms behind his back. “Hmm well you do have a point, but I have no control over where the band goes. I have no control when your husband comes home, so lashing out at me, because of that, isn’t fair. Not that you care.” He added harshly.  His voice had such a sharp turn, his eyes lacked the sparkle they normally had. His eyes, now dull, narrowed as he kept talking. “Compassion isn’t something you should hand out to your loved ones or those you deem worthy. Humans are flawed, everyone is, that’s why it should be handed out more.” He moved one hand to his chin, the other to his his back pocket. “But I can hear you think , ‘ Oh I had to worked hard to be where I am, so weak people, poor people should just work harder like I did.’ Not everyone is so lucky as you Mary. Not everyone is like you. I am not like you. I won’t let you stomp all over me like you do Bobby. I won’t let you stand around to make me feel like the worst person ever because I showed you compassion, and then fought back when you were cold.”

“Go to hell.” She snapped, her tone so sharp you could almost see the blood dripping off her teeth. “Go to fucking hell Crewe. Sure, I have free time. I have some time to myself. But most of my time is eaten up by laundry and cooking and cleaning and parenting and shuttling my girls from activities and still trying to be social. But I’m alone in my house for most of the day. It takes a pretty big fucking toll on you. Especially when you don’t get the comfort of knowing that someone is going to hold you to make it all better at the end of the day.

Mary sighed heavily, her slender arms folded neatly over her supple chest as she looked back at her husband’s boss incredulously. She was short on patience as of late and this passive way of escaping her blame was testing it. She didn’t need help. She was a woman grown, no matter what Crewe claimed, he shouldn’t be fussing over her like a child. “Well, I’m not your…partner, am I?” The redhead replied with a overtone of judgement in her words, lingering on the word partner longer than she needed to. It was a low blow, but she wasn’t currently feeling very patient with Robert or this argument. “I don’t see why you have to worry about me at all. I’m nobody to you, Crewe.”

As he walked away, she began digging through her purse for a lighter before forcing herself up from the couch and following after the man. 

“Need a light?”

Crewe turned around, just to glance at Mary, the cigarette between his lips but it was unlit. He shrugged, turned back away, and stuffed it in his pocket. “No I thought it over. I am doing fine. Don’t need it right now.” He still didn’t say anything right away, taking his time thinking on what to say. It’s not like the words bothered him, he had heard, far, far worse. Still there was something that was bothering him. Beyond the fact that Mary could afford to hire someone to cook, clean, and do laundry once a week so she could see someone. No, something else. “I am not sure with me saying i cared for my younger brothers has anything to do with how I spend my time. Or that I have to have someone in my bedroom to care about them.” He sighed and turned around to face her, one hand in his pocket, the other on his hip. “ It’s not like I am always with someone, I understand what loneliness is. You might hear rumors I am always with someone, but that’s just silly. Even I have times where I can’t be with anyone.” “You know, I thought you were smarter than this, that of course someone could have compassion for someone they hardly know. Or…maybe…” He chuckled holding a finger up to his mouth tapping it, smiling, before lowering it. “Maybe that’s just you, you can’t find compassion for others you hardly know?”
