Throughout the spring of 1997, Joan Wasser made monthly visits to Memphis to stay with Jeff. Jeff had let the grass in his front yard grow wild, and he and Wasser would lie in it, feeling the sun hit them and green insects crawl over them. One day he allowed Joan to paint his toenails green, his favorite color. He’d always been touchy about his feet- the result of a childhood ingrown toenail- and didn’t even like to take off his shoes. For her, the toenail-painting session and Jeff’s new appreciation of nature was one of the most positive signs of all.
