they say you are a mosaic of everyone you have ever loved.
i think the universe is a mosaic of everyone who has ever lived; of everyone it has ever loved.
the footsteps you leave on the ground are imprinted over those who called your city home before you ever did. the trees growing around you are wise, wise from the hundreds of years they have lived and the thousands of lives they have seen start and end. the language you speak was first spoken a hundred thousand years ago.
the sun has been giving ever since the start of time; your ancestors too, complained about its generous warmth and its absence on cloudy days. there have been those who wanted to photograph the sunsets like you do; in paintings and poems. there have been those who stayed up to watch the sunrise after a long night, just like you still do.
for thousands of centuries, the moon has been lurking in the daylight, quietly witnessing the rise and fall of thousands of empires and only revealing herself in the dark to listen to those who stay up to confide in her. the moon has heard your secrets and holds those of everyone before you as well.
countless people have answered to your name, and countless more will. someone had to draw the lines between the clusters of stars we call constellations. someone had to pave the roads you walk on. someone had to sow the first seed of the oranges you love so much.
the same roses grow in the same soil they have always grown in, waiting to be plucked and gifted. the ocean has been humming this constant rhythm forever, listening to the laughter of friends, and the sounds of little children chasing each other around.
the universe has heard your first cry, your first words, your first argument with your parents, your laughter, and your sobs, and it will hear the sound of your last breath.
if you look hard enough, you will find specks of love left behind by humans in everything they touch; in every corner of the world. people will forget, but the universe will not. it will always remember you.
they say change is a constant, and that is true to an extent. people change, but not the universe.
the sun, the moon and the waves have never broken their promise of coming back.
