Events that went down in history during the Dance of the Dragons 3/18

Otto Hightower arrives at Dragonstone to offer terms of peace to Rhaenyra I

After the coronation of RHAENYRA I, SER OTTO HIGHTOWER, HAND OF THE KING AEGON II, arrives at DRAGONSTONE to offer terms of peace to QUEEN RHAENYRA and her family, accompanied by MAESTER ORWYLE, SER ERRYK CARGYLL, and a small garrison of soldiers from HOUSE HIGHTOWER

The GREEN's envoy was unable to reach the castle gates and was intercepted by the QUEEN's CONSORT, DAEMON TARGARYEN, and the QUEENSGUARD; SER STEFFON DARKLYN, SER LORENT MARBRAND & SER ARRYK CARGYLL, along with a garrison of soldiers from HOUSE TARGARYEN, on the bridge leading to the fortress.

It was there where QUEEN RHAENYRA I arrived on the back of her dragon SYRAX, and while OTTO HIGHTOWER addressed RHAENYRA as “PRINCESS,” the QUEEN made it clear to SER OTTO that she was now QUEEN and that he and all his followers were traitors to the realm.

SER OTTO was the messenger who delivered KING AEGON's offer to his sister RHAENYRA: acknowledge AEGON as KING and swear allegiance to the IRON THRONE; in return, KING AEGON would confirm RHAENYRA's claim on DRAGONSTONE, which would then pass to her HEIR, JACAERYS VELARYON; in addition, LUCERYS VELARYON would be confirmed as HEIR to DRIFTMARK and future LORD OF THE TIDES

And last but not least, her children by DAEMON TARGARYEN would be granted positions of great honor: AEGON THE YOUNGER as the KING's SQUIRE, and VISERYS as his ROYAL CUPBEARER. AEGON also promised to pardon any KNIGHT & LORD who had conspired against his accession

But the politics didn't last long, as the QUEEN's CONSORT, DAEMON TARGARYEN, declared that he would rather feed his children to the dragons than see them carrying shields and cups for, and I quote… “your drunken, usurper, cunt of a king…”

Tensions escalated when OTTO HIGHTOWER declared that “every symbol of legitimacy belongs to Aegon” and that HOUSE STARK, TULLY & BARATHEON had been offered very generous terms. QUEEN RHAENYRA stripped him of his HAND OF THE KING badge and called him a traitor; SER OTTO, for his part, appealed to the QUEEN DOWAGER, ALICENT, and somehow managed to move the QUEEN's heart, just as the ROYAL CONSORT drew his sword to take SER OTTO's head—a thing the QUEEN forbade, concluding that they would receive her answer shortly, and that OTTO HIGHTOWER had safe passage back to KINGSLANDING

BONUS

Something that draws attention is that KING AEGON II’s offer included relinquishing his claim to DRAGONSTONE, since the title of “PRINCE OR PRINCESS OF DRAGONSTONE” is reserved exclusively for HEIRS to the IRON THRONE. This may have been an attempt to establish a new tradition, as AEGON II was never named heir and therefore never held the title of PRINCE OF DRAGONSTONE.

The truth is that, under different circumstances, the positions offered to PRINCES AEGON & VISERYS would be among the highest honors, but in this particular case, both positions would be used to hold the PRINCES as hostages of the GREENS…

Another thing that caught the attention of those present were the insults directed by the ROYAL CONSORT toward KING AEGON II; witnesses report that, during his stay in KINGSLANDING to attend the audience for the succession of DRIFTMARK, the then-PRINCE DAEMON heard from the then-PRINCESS HELAENA that AEGON “ignored her most of the time, except when he was drunk” words that the CONSORT apparently did not forget.

1- Attire for the Great Council of 101 A.C. at Harrenhall: a gold and white tunic embroidered with the sigil of House Targaryen across the chest and on the elbows, accompanied by a white cloak—apparently made of leather—with gold embroidery and metal and ruby embellishments, held in place by a gold brooch encrusted with a large ruby and a gold ring on his right little finger2- Accompanied by two gold chains, one thicker and longer, the other thinner and shorter. The shorter chain, made of square and circular links, is worn by his successor, King Viserys I

2. PRINCE BAELOR TARGARYEN "BREAKSPEARS" "THE HAMMER" of Dragonstone

1- Two-piece travel garment, black long-sleeved undergarment made of thick, opaque fabric. Over it, a long, thick, sleeveless coat in mottled black velvet. Embellished with metal brooches—two small ones on the left side and two more on the right—shaped like dragon scales, one medium-sized and one longer, serving as the clasp for the Hand of the King pin. 2- Accompanied by a thick black leather belt with red trim, with his dagger hanging from it. And his two rings, one on each ring finger. 3- Also accompanied by a thick black travel cloak, open-fronted and sleeveless, held in place by a metal clasp at the neck.

3. PRINCE VALARR TARGARYEN "THE YOUNG PRINCE"

1- A two-piece travel outfit, consisting of a long black bottom piece with different patterns resembling dragon scales and red details. On top, a black coat with different patterns resembling dragon scales, red details, and two metal brooches. 2- For the funeral of his father, Prince Baelor. He added a thick black velvet cloak and a red band with black trim, held in place by a brooch shaped like the emblem of House Targaryen 3- Also accompanied by a thin black travel cloak made of mottled velvet.

4. PRINCE MAEKAR TARGARYEN "THE ANVIL" of Summerhall

1- A two-piece travel outfit; the inner layer is a thick black-and-white fabric garment with long sleeves. Over it is a thick black suede coat with red trim and two metal clasps, accompanied by a thick black leather belt with his dagger hanging from it. 2- Two-piece suit, dark gray long-sleeved inner layer with red accents, worn over a black sleeveless velvet coat with red and black leather accents. Features two metal brooches, accompanied by the same black leather belt and dagger and a ring on his little finger 3- The first outfit, accompanied by a thick black suede travel cloak with a hood, held in place by a metal clasp 4- The second outfit, accompanied by a black velvet cape, held in place by two metal brooches shaped with the emblem of House Targaryen 5- After Prince Baelor's death, his brother Maekar kept his brother's small dragon-scale brooch

It makes no sense for Daemon to be refered to as KING consort, Prince Consort yes but not King, as King outranks the Queen. We can see it from some real world examples as well

None of them has title "King", Ryan and Sara obvuously didm't know that when they wrote the show, as not even in the book is Daemon ever refered to as King.

Hi anon! It directly contradicts the canon of the book, yes.

Whether or not it makes sense is debatable. Martin wrote that Rhaenyra named Daemon Prince Consort and Protector of the Realm, so that is the canon, indisputably.

Now, in the series, whenever Rhaenyra’s husband has been mentioned, he has always been referred to by the title of King Consort.

Now, in reality, both titles exist. I understand that in some cases the title “King Consort” has been used when the husband of the reigning queen already holds a very high-ranking title, such as Philip II of Spain and Mary I of England, or Francis of Assisi of Bourbon.

Regarding Daemon specifically, I think either title would suit him, though I agree that the title “Prince Consort” is more appropriate for him, first because of the context: many feared that Daemon would usurp the power that rightfully belongs to Rhaenyra, and as “king consort” it does give that impression, and also, Martin described him as “brother of a king, husband of a queen, father of two kings, and grandfather of three kings,” but he was never king, so calling him king consort contradicts what I feel is an important part of the character.

On the positive side, I do think it makes a difference that both Rhaenyra and Daemon, as well as their children, receive this “upgrade” in titles; it all feels more official, but it’s just a matter of appearance.

Baela and Rhaena wouldn't become Princesses on the anointing of their stepmother, surely?

Hi, anon! It’s not that Baela and Rhaena receive a formal title, but when Rhaenyra is crowned, their father becomes king consort and their stepmother queen, and from that moment on, some members of the Blacks begin to call them “princesses.” Ser Steffon Darklyn refers to Rhaena as “princess” when Rhaenyra asks him to claim to Seasmoke, and by the second season, in the episode descriptions and promotional material, both are listed with the title of princess. Obviously, all of this is circumstantial since they are in the midst of a war for the throne, but to the Blacks, they are princesses.

The funeral was held privately at DRAGONSTONE, and PRINCESS VISENYA TARGARYEN departed this world in accordance with Targaryen tradition.

That is where SER ERRYK CARGYLL arrives to swear allegiance to QUEEN RHAENYRA I as a member of her QUEENSGUARD, alongside his brothers SER STEFFON DARKLYN and SER LORENT MALBRAND, and to present the QUEEN with the crown of his father, KING VISERYS I, and of KING JAEHAERYS I

It was her husband, PRINCE DAEMON TARGARYEN, who crowned her

The coronation of Aegon II at Dragonpit

In the year 129 AC, following the death of KING VISERYS I TARGARYEN, the GREENS rushed to crown AEGON II TARGARYEN before the common people and chose DRAGONPIT as the location for the coronation.

The CITY WATCH was ordered to gather as many people from KINGSLANDING as possible at DRAGONPIT to witness the coronation of the new king.

In the presence of: the HAND OF THE KING, OTTO HIGHTOWER; the QUEEN DOWAGER, ALICENT HIGHTOWER; PRINCESS HELAENA TARGARYEN; PRINCE AEMOND TARGARYEN; SEPTON EUSTACE; the GRAND MAESTER, ORWYLE; and the members of the SMALL COUNCIL, LORD LARYS STRONG, SER TYLAND LANNISTER and LORD JASPER WYLDE, with the exception of LORD LYMAN BEESBURY and the KINGSGUARDS; SER RICKARD THORNE and SER ARRYK CARGYLL.

The new KING was invested with the CONQUEROR's crown and sword, and anointed not by the HIGH SEPTON, as tradition dictates, but by SEPTON EUSTACE, and finally crowned by SER CRISTON COLE, LORD COMMANDER OF THE KINGSGUARD. The KING was applauded, cheered, and enthusiastically celebrated by the common people

... Until PRINCESS RHAENYS TARGARYEN burst in on the back of her dragon MELEYS, causing death, chaos, and confusion.

Witnesses claim that the PRINCESS'S target was the new KING, and that AEGON II fearlessly defended himself against the DRAGON; some say that PRINCESS RHAENYS only wanted to flee the city before she was executed. Others even claim that QUEEN ALICENT pleaded for her SON'S life, appealing from one mother to another. Chaos and confusion prevent us from knowing the truth...
