Ayato's realistic in the sense that there's a lot of guys like him in real life. Sometimes, I can't tolerate his behaviour in the game as a whole. There's aspects that I like and dislike. I think he's definitely developed in some areas, but others not soooo much.

I recently went through his VC route, and like in chapter 4, I think? After Ayato saves Yui from the fire/being kidnapped, he blames her, saying it's her fault she got kidnapped. Oh my fucking GOD she's HUMAN stuck in a world with TELEPORTING VAMPIRES who are miles stronger than her. WHAT WERE YOU EXPECTING AYATO!?

"I'm sorry I took him to the carnival" it was HIS FUCKING IDEA TO GO OUTSIDE IN THE FIRST PLACE. WHAT DO YOU MEAN. SHE DIDN'T TAKE HIM ANYWHERE. The whole blaming things that are obviously out of her control has to GO.

I have just began watching play throughs of the game, currently on his prologue in haunted dark bridal but trust me i will catch up.

He is realistic in the way you describe, but oh my days does it rile me up when there’s certain dick riders that try to make him out to be this perfect Angel who had a bad childhood.

Ayatos childhood was abusive because of Cordelia and he was made as this golden child. But this is where that experience and environment plays into his personality. Now I won’t say who this person is (bc I did see someone make a post about this) but I think you low-key do need to realise that Ayato definitely would have NPD (narcissistic personality disorder)

For starters, bavk in therapy a couple year ago I was told NPD was a defence mechanism against things such as severe childhood abuse. Ayato would most definitely have NPD but also maybe have some genetic traits he inherited from like Cordelia.

And for the dick riders who thibk hes perfect here is a list of Ayato’s personality traits that are also NPD symptoms:

• Grandiosity & Egocentrism

• Need for Omnipotence & Control

• Devaluation & Projection

• Severe Hypervigilance & Rejection Sensitivity

• Intimacy Avoidance & Counter-Dependency

• Perfectionism & Achievement-Based Worth.

Now, growth and development is needed in characters or else they are boring. But those achievements do not suddenly overpower the fact he is a narcissist and he is a bully. And even though his childhood abuse from Cordelia was unfair and should never happen to a child. It’s a reason but never an excuse.

The fact is, in yui/ the heroines dialogue legit says “sorry I took him to a carnival” when it was him who wanted to go out is holy manipulation. She is a poor human girl who is stuck with these bum ass vampires who project everything onto her and gaslight her, and take advantage of her and are VERY VERY VERY FUCKING STRONGER THAN HER and she is apparently “not a good heroine”. I don’t fucking Blame her for some routes where she ends up stabbing I think it was Shu. I fucking would too.

I was going to make a post mentioning Ayato's NPD, but I was hesitant, too, in case I got some things wrong. I saw a post of someone trying to deny that he has NPD or was narcissistic because, well, "he wasn't always like that. Deep down, he is immensely insecure and thinks he's not worthy of things. He's done some good things, etc." it isn't verbatim what was said, but that was the just of it. I just thought that was a very shallow and simple way of looking at NPD and people who have it. Like, what did you think NPD was? People who have NPD aren't evil caricatures from comic books who are one note. They're complex. There's different types of narcissism as well, I saw a post analysing this, and I believe they put him under grandiose narcissism.

I understand liking a character. I find Ayato to be an entertaining character myself, I laugh at his stupidity often. I just hate when people put a rose coloured lens when viewing him. I feel like Ayato tends to get that treatment a decent amount by people in the fandom. It just makes analysing him and all of the other characters in DL dull. There's also an account that I've seen, I won't name them, but sometimes it feels they put him on a certain pedestal, which I get it. If that's your number 1, that's your number 1, but I find that they rarely ever bring up his toxic behaviour, yet they're always open to analysing the toxic behaviour in other characters. I just found that.. Interesting.
