House of Worth Evening Dress, c. 1883
Silk brocade, silk crepe, silk net, chenille, glass faux pearls, and seed beads
The great couturier Charles Frederick Worth was widely regarded as “an artist of luxury.” He created dresses that were expensive confections of lavish fabrics, trimmings, and embroidery for a clientele of wealthy Europeans and Americans. Worth proclaimed, “We live by and for luxury.”
Mme. Arnaud Dress, c. 1888
Medium: Green silk velvet, green silk faille, multi-color beads and embroidery
Madame Arnaud’s Rue Bassano address did not put her at the geographic center of Paris fashion, but this elaborate morning dress nonetheless identifies her as a talented couturière. Her interest in sumptuous materials is evident in the richly colored fabrics that drape and fold to create the skirt’s sculptural form. The top folds of the velvet overskirt are stiffened to maintain an origami-like shape. This dress also has a more formal bodice to wear in the afternoon.
Callot Soeurs Evening Dress, c. 1909
Medium: Black lace, white taffeta, sequins and rhinestones
The sisters Callot - Marie Gerber, Marthe Bertrand, Régina Tennyson-Chantrell, and Joséphine Crimont - often used delicate materials in their very feminine creations. They were especially renowned for their exquisite lacework, such as the black, imbricated leaf pattern overlaid on pale taffeta seen here. This dress, finely embellished with black and silver sequins and rhinestones, represents the magnificence of fashions in La Belle Époque. In the early twentieth century, for those who could afford it, Callot couture was luxury of the highest order.

I can solve this millennial or gen z confusion
If you had any of the following phones as a teenager you’re a millennial. If you started teenage years with an iPhone you’re gen z.

The funny cats histories
1790s silk coat. “This young man’s tailcoat, with its high turned-down collar, narrow back, and wide lapels, exemplifies the exaggerated silhouette fashionable in post-revolutionary France. Striped textiles, modish from the 1760s, were ubiquitous in the dress of both sexes by the end of the century. In menswear, stripes served as a decorative substitute for the ornate, polychrome embroidery of earlier suits. The trend reflects the influence of Orientalism and neoclassical taste; in earlier centuries, stripes had pejorative connotations in the West and were associated with the clothing of socially marginalized groups.” Metropolitan Museum of Art accession number 999.105.2 . . . . #historicalgarments #menswearmonday #1790s #18thcentury #silkcoat #mcm #dandyism #neoclassical #lapel #France #textiles #fashionhistory #tailcoat #vintagebuttons #fashionindetail #closeup (at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnj2dajl1Bp/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1dhccnipqr6zt

Dancing in the Rain
Perhaps, just maybe, you’d been out for a walk in the rain, or you’d been driving home from dinner or a bakery or ice cream parlor; or a walk on the beach because he knew you loved the beach more than anywhere, and he smirked a little while his eyes were trained in the road, knowing you were watching him–just staring, admiring how sexy he looked behind the wheel. And as he was getting his keys out of his pocket, or finding the house key on the ring of keys clutched in his hand, he would unlock the door and turn to let you in first only to find you dancing in the driveway, arms out and head tilted back to face the sky with closed eyes and a giant smile on your face and jumped and twirled in circles. And perhaps he would smile softly and shake his head a little, his hair getting wet and clothes becoming soaked, but he stands and watches you anyway because you look so happy and that’s all he ever wants for you. And then he maybe steps off the porch step and toes his way to the driveway and maybe he walks over to you in few steps with his long legs and taps your shoulder or catches you when you stumble, and holds out a hand and when you clasp it he pulls you into him and you simply slow dance in the pouring rain. He kisses you and brushes the wet hair out if your face and kisses you again and you wrap your arms around his waist or his neck and his are around your waist and you kiss again in the rain. And when you finally go inside your house he leads you to the bedroom where he helps you strip off your wet clothes and he turns on the shower, a little too cold at first so the hot water doesn’t shock you, and he steps in the shower with you where he hugs you and nuzzle his nose in your neck and gives it a little kiss. And maybe you have some shower sex and maybe you don’t, but you help each other wash up and rinse off and then you stand together in the cool but comforting water as it slides over your bodies and leaves you warm but cool in the most pleasant way. And then he wraps you in a towel as well as himself and maybe he helps you brush your hair and even tries to braid it for you just the way you like. Maybe he rubs your flower scented lotion onto your shoulders for you and after you’re both dressed he goes to the bedroom while you use the bathroom, and when you come out you clamber onto the bed and lay down next to him, laying your head on his chest and he wraps his arms around your body and presses kisses to your head, and with gently whispered “I love you”’s you both fall asleep to the peaceful sound of the rain washing the house and the rise and fall of your chests, the calming scents of your body washes and shampoos lingering, the safe feel of being next to each other, holding each other, touching each other, and the sweet sound of his heartbeat.
