i do think ff3 (the DS remake bc it's the only one I've played) might be the platonic ideal of a generic jrpg. Like i don’t even mean that in a good or bad way its just… So Straightforward. The game plays everything really earnest and direct and kinda doesn’t do anything absurdly interesting or subversive.
You really just do fight progressively stronger enemies and upgrade your gear, fighting ambiguously towards a chosen one goal of saving the world. The job system is good but not absurdly deep, so the game stays pretty well paced and entertaining, but not like in a way that stands out.
It can be super easily compared to ff5 but ff5 is such a good fucking game that i feel like it fails to meet ‘generic jrpg’ as a standard. Even though I wouldn't say ff5 is particularly subversive in it's content, it's just so well designed and fun with such well fleshed out systems that it feels distinct just by being at the pinnacle of what it's doing. And the fact that ff5 is doing this with essentially the exact same gameplay system as ff3 makes ff3 feel even more generic by standing in it's shadow.
I think if you wanted a game to have someone play so they could like, understand what games like moon and undertale and earthbound are playing off of, final fantasy 3 would be a genuinely really compelling choice.

Here's the art I did for the Traveling Chocobo card for the MTG x Final Fantasy crossover set, what a dream to work on one of my favourite Final Fantasy creatures!

it is of course easier to performatively ban children from social media than to do things like "actually challenge and regulate the abusive tactics tech companies use to extract people's data and money via social media" but if we did the second thing we wouldn't have any excuse to force people to use digital ID :(
Image description: it's an illustration of Golbez and his Four Kings from Final Fantasy 4. From left to right, there is Barbariccia, Golbez, Rubicante, Cagnazzo and Scarmiglione. Barbariccia is drawn in green and yellow colors, floating above the rest. Golbez is in the center holding up one arm with a sphere floating above it. End of description.
kids were roleplaying with minecraft figurines and one of them had their figure go up to the other and say “i’m in love with you” and the other one replied “sword slash to the chest. and you’re on fire”
