FIGHT FOR THE FUTURE - Hate groups poisoning our movement
We’re launching something important for Pride Month.
For a long time, we’ve known that there are some less-than-scrupulous people working on tech policy. It turns out that several powerful anti-LGBTQ+ organizations have infiltrated the movement—lobbying for bills like KOSA and pretending to be experts on what keeps kids safe online.1
The Heritage Foundation, NCOSE, the Ethics and Public Policy Center, and the Eagle Forum are Religious Right groups that have been active for decades.2 They got their start opposing marriage equality and fighting abortion rights. Now, they’re trying to blacklist LGBTQ+ and abortion speech.
This Pride Month, we're asking digital rights groups to cut ties with the Religious Right. If you agree that that anti-LGBTQ+ hate groups have no place in this movement, sign our letter now.

Unfortunately, the digital rights space is small, and Heritage et al. are sneaky. We learned that some digital rights groups have collaborated with the Religious Right—whether they know it or not.
Humanpower can feel scarce in the digital rights movement, and sometimes we work with people with whom we disagree. But we have to draw a line: collaborating with hate groups is unacceptable, especially as LGBTQ+ people are being targeted by a government partially staffed by Religious Right figures.

AGE VERIFICATION ALL-HANDS-ON-DECK MOMENT
BAD NEWS: The House GOP and Democratic members of the Energy and Commerce Committee have been working on a package of age-verification bills and have finally struck a deal (I believe some of these are the same bills in the KIDS Act which they had passed out of committee a few months ago). Theoretically, this means that the House of Representatives could bring this package up for a vote at any time, with some reporters saying as early as this week or next week.
If this package were to pass it would still face an uphill battle as the House version of KOSA doesn't not include a duty of care provision, which the Senate wants.
However, we need to do everything to can to stop this from passing now, so it doesn't advance any further.
We must call House Leadership, our representatives, and our senators to express our opposition and we need to spread the work. If we can make noise and create pressure over how unpopular age verification is, it makes passing bills like these less enticing.
(Note: this is different from whatever deal the Senate and the White House are trying to reach over AI and age-verification)

They have secured democrat support for a once republican only package
Democrats weren’t supporting the package because it didn’t go far enough

• Forces everyone (not just kids) to upload a government ID or submit to a facial recognition scan to create a social media account or post online, even on educational sites like Wikipedia
• Force parents to send even more sensitive information to Big Tech companies to “verify” custody in order for a minor to create an account (think: sending a birth certificate to Mark Zuckerberg to let your teen create an account)
• Allow unsupportive parents to lock queer and trans youth off the Internet, restricting access to life-saving community and information with zero recourse
• Expand the Trump admin’s surveillance capabilities, making it easier for them to persecute people organizing protests, monitoring ICE, and criticizing the administration
• Cost Massachusetts tax payers enormously, as the legislation is clearly unconstitutional and would face legal challenges.
• Specifically harm undocumented folks who use social media to warn communities about ICE activity and raise money for family members
• Fine smaller and non-profit tech platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky out of business, further expanding the monopolies of Big Tech platforms
It is one of many of the worst pieces of digital surveillance legislation right now in the states.

Yeah the internet is far from perfect but adding these awful age verification bills or banning it,will only isolate kids in abusive,hostile households.
In a way Their rewarding the bad people by introducing these stupid laws.
It makes my blood boil, too. I also think there is a government aspect to this as well! 🌐😒
I swear if we start holding these bad parents accountable, this would immediately stop.
That's why I encourage you to be honest with parents and tell them what they are doing will not help kids and state the facts of the situation.
They are not realizing this will push kids further onto unsafe platforms or sites, causing actual problems (Like it already is doing.) Especially with predators and bad things that they claim to want to protect the kids against.
I also think this is a government issue, too.
I think that the government is using these scare tactics to get our information, to silence us, and to push their own narrative. All of these laws would strip away our privacy online for good, proving my points. It's almost like they are trying to push for authoritarianism and fascism in the name of safety. My name is (legal name) I am a (state) constituent, (zip code) and I am calling to urge you to oppose the Kids Online Safety Act.
Even though there have been significant promising changes to the bill, KOSA still fails to address the root issues related to kid’s safety online, and furthermore puts everyone at risk. While I support efforts to protect children online, this bill overreaches in ways that will harm the right to privacy and freedom of speech.
We’ve already seen how poorly this kind of policy plays out abroad. The United Kingdom passed a similar law, the Online Safety Act, which has since faced immense public backlash. A petition calling for its repeal has already surpassed its goal by more than four hundred thousand signatures. The U.S. has an even larger population, if this kind of law sparks that level of concern in the UK, we can expect far greater unrest here.
KOSA would require online platforms to verify the ages of their users, forcing us to hand over sensitive personal information, like government-issued IDs, just to access everyday websites. This kind of data collection creates massive security risks. This information could be exploited for unprecendented levels of identity theft, fraud, and surveillance.
As an adult, I should not be forced to compromise my privacy or safety to use the internet. Age-verification mandates like those in KOSA set a dangerous precedent and open the door to widespread monitoring and censorship under the guise of child protection.
There are better ways to help kids stay safe online without sacrificing the rights and privacy of millions of adults while allowing for the exposure of such sensitive data to malicious hackers.

It drives me crazy how so many people are just...ok with banning kids from social media and actively ignore what we tell them.
I don't think any people who support it are going to see this since like, this is tumblr, but imagine that you can't vote and need to have someone else give their permission for you to go somewhere, just like, go to any place, and your opinions are constantly devalued and you're not taken seriously by the people around you, your freinds might not have that much free time to do anything together and there are basically no public spaces where you can spend time. So your outlet becomes social media. After all, it's the only place where you can really find communities and express your opinions. Now imagine that that one place is now suddenly evil and addictive and every person in the government thinks you shouldn't have access to it because their great grandchildren look at their Instagarmies and TikityToks too much and they just need to get off their damn phones!!
So now, if it gets banned, you would have basically no means of communicating your opinions to the outside world (and yes, the internet is part of the 'real world'), you would be ignored in any serious political action setting because of your age and then all you could do to express any opinions you have would be going to protests. But those happen infrequently, you would have to get permission from your parents, and you can't say anything longer than what can fit on a sign. Every community or fandom that you were in would be gone from your life and you might not have any freinds with the same interests.
The people who support these bans don't care about kids.
Banning social media would be a band-aid solution to the problems of rising depression and anxiety in teens (just speaking personally, my mental health has greatly decreased after learning about these proposed bans and the idea of not having any other way to be perceived besides my physical body because of this has caused me to develop some body image issues.) and if these platforms are as addicting as people say it would still let them hurt adult users.
If you support banning kids from social media genuinely fuck you.

And here’s one of the more important parts: I don’t like sharing this but basically my parents aren’t exactly… the best. If I didn’t learn about what toxic parenting (and parental abuse) looks like from YouTube (back when I didn’t boycott YouTube), god knows what could have happened to me. Banning the internet from tens of hundreds of probably even thousands of kids like me, who unlike me, do not know that how they’re being treated isn’t normal, would severely endanger them. And yes, schools do teach and/or talk about this topic, but none go truly in depth (unless you were to be say, studying the subject of child abuse and the aftereffects and what not). If I didn’t happen to look at videos discussing toxic parenting and how it psychologically affects you, I probably would be in way worse of a mental state than I am now. Matter of fact, I’d probably be dead.
So I will repeat what the original poster said: Banning social media from kids is a bandaid solution at best, and will without a doubt, worsen the current mental health crisis. Barring kids from social media isn’t going to fix the mental health issues of the current generation, because a lot of our mental health issues (in the US at least) stem from some form of social, economic, systemic, or political inequality. And solving those problems take way more than banning the internet. I agree that kids should be careful on the internet, and as someone who taught herself how to stay safe on the internet (ie: don’t say where you live, your name, stuff like that), I also agree that people should definitely teach their kids to be more careful on the internet. HOWEVER, teaching kids basic internet safety is not the same as banning the internet for kids entirely.
