I love my job, but imposter syndrome is a very real thing, especially since my colleagues are all 20 years older and more experienced than me.

Whenever anyone asks me about it, I kinda brush it off with “oh, well, he had Alzheimer’s,” “it’s for the best,” “he wouldn’t have wanted to live like that” - and that’s all true. But, honestly, I’m devastated.

I didn’t think I would be. I thought I’d done all of my grieving bit by bit over the last seven years or so. Because really I didn’t lose anything when he died two weeks ago that I hadn’t already lost years ago when he stopped knowing who I was.

But I’m still crying every day because suddenly it’s hit me - everything that we should have had over the last seven years. The fact that the man who had such a huge impact on my childhood never really got to see me grow up. The fact that I had to see him like that - have my memories of the gentle, kind, loving, intelligent man that I adored tainted by the memories of the violent, confused shell of a man it turned him into.

He would have been thrilled to see me go off on my backpacking trip. He once did one of his own. When I got back, we might have talked about the history of the places I’d been to, compared stories from places we’d both been to. It’s been so long since I’ve heard one of his stories, I can’t even remember what the last one was.

It’s over and I’m relieved for him and I don’t think anyone could say that Granddad dying wasn’t the best thing for everyone - Granddad himself most of all. But I am so angry at the disease that stole seven years that I should have had with him, that took away the dignity that he should have ended his life with. So I guess I’m still grieving for that.
