This is an extremely rare and expensive type of jadeite known in the Hong Kong and Chinese markets as “Inky Jade” or “Mexican Green”.

This stone is special for many reasons most importantly for its extreme rarity and beauty, which makes it one of the most desirable stones to possess for both investment and collection purposes.

The extremely fine texture of this mineral is related to the small size and uniformity of the omphacite-jadeitite crystals within the mineral lattice which ultimately determines the stone’s clarity and velvety appearance.

The stone is judged by the intensity of black color as it appears under normal lighting conditions and also by the clarity and green color that it produces when it is placed over a transmitted light source.  In some ways, this type of jadeite is judged twice as difficult as normal jadeite because it extremely difficult to find a piece that is both extremely black in color and free of white inclusions. It is also judged when placed under a transmitted light source, assesssing it for both its clarity and emerald green color that it emits.

The exact pressures and ingredients needed to create these rare gemstones is an extremely rare natural occurrence. Only one spot on the planet has the perfect conditions where the upwelling of the land and the natural erosion from the Uru river has exposed the once hidden ‘basement’ rocks which contain the small alluvial boulders containing gem quality translucent black jadeite.
