Tonight I met Dr. Jane Goodall, one of my greatest heroes, and heard her tell the story of her life’s work. I am in such awe of this remarkable woman and to have been in her presence alone and listen to her wisdom was enough of a blessing. She is charming and funny and witty, even sassy, and she is reserved, humble, kind, warm and so captivating, I seldom took my eyes off her the whole evening. Meeting her was the icing on the cake and a dream come true except I never dared to dream I’d ever meet her at all for fear of disappointment if it didn’t happen. Better to not get my hopes up. And yet the dream I didn’t quite dream came true. Magic must be real.
As I stood in line and purchased my books which I am excited to read, I thought about what I wanted to say to her. She’s probably heard it all before – all the ways she inspires people and all the thank you’s and how amazing she is – so what could I possibly say in the few minutes I would have with her? I decided on the truth. I would tell her the truth and speak from the heart.
I approached her and she smiled as she was handed the 2 books I bought for her to sign.
“Hello, Dr. Goodall,” I said, a bit nervous.
“Hello,” she replied with another smile and began to sign my book. She was signing but attentive when she was being spoken to so I boldly spoke the words from my heart.
“It is an honour to meet you and I just want you to know that your message of hope really resonates with me especially now as it’s so hard to witness all the conflict in the world.”
“So horrible, isn’t it?” she interjected, still signing away but fully listening to what I was saying. I was moved to know she was paying such close attention and not just going through the motions as most celebs are wont to do. She was present with me in our brief but meaningful moment together.
“Yes!” I replied. “But I am inspired by your work to be an agent of change and I hope to move back to my homeland Guyana soon and hopefully start a Roots and Shoots program to help the environment and people there.”
“Guyana?” she asked, looking up at me into my eyes.
“Yes, British Guiana,” I answered.
“Speak to Susana,” she said suddenly, turning to the woman who was assisting her and getting her attention. The woman turned out to be Susana, the VP of Founder Relations for the Jane Goodall Institute. “She’s from Guyana, give her your card,” she told Susana who grabbed a business card and handed it to me.
“She’ll be in touch,” Dr. Jane said to Susana, looking at me with a smile. Gratitude rushed from my lips as I thanked her and Susana, for this was more than I expected. Dr. Jane Goodall on board with my wild idea to affect positive change in my beloved homeland! Wow. Could she be more amazing?! I am blown away by her time and effort to have me connect with her people to make my seemingly impossible goal happen.
Then we took this photo, I thanked her again and wished her a good night and she smiled once more. A beautiful peaceful and grateful smile that warmed my whole soul. She had given a part of herself to me in these precious minutes spent with her and I am now filled with a renewed spirit that is so determined to make my wild ideas a reality and do this woman proud. The indomitable human spirit she speaks of so often as she travels the world sharing her story. The spirit within her. And I feel connected to the earth, the heavens, the most high being above, and to this lovely, lovely woman who healed me a little more so I can continue on my journey. I am blessed beyond measure.
If you zoom in, the book I am holding says “A dream come true” … though I didn’t dare to dream this dream, as I look at this photo and see the joy on my face and serenity on hers, it couldn’t be more clear that this was a dream my heart knew it wanted before my mind did and it came true just as it was meant to.
