A random hedgehog anecdote

I woke up this morning at the ungodly hour of 6 am and immediately noticed that the power was out.

I didn’t know how long it had been out and I was slightly cold because the gas heat was shut off. But of course my first thoughts were of my hegehog, Thistle. Her cage is in a spare bedroom next to mine so I got up and went to check on her cage temperature. 69.1 degrees Fuck.

No electricity = No CHE System = Cold hedgehog = Dead hedgehog

Time to dig out the hand warmers. I bought a few over winter. After digging through an immense pile of hedgehog stuff under her cage (and waking up everybody in the house - sorry) I found them. Her royal sassy pricklebutt decided that these foreign objects were forbidden from the inside the igloo. So I opened up three and placed them on the outside edge so she could snuggle up to them. This was a good compromise after stuffing her in the igloo followed by a large handful of bedding. (For God’s sake stay in the only place in your cage that is warm!)

In summary…..

Make sure you have a back up plan for when the power goes out. A non-electrical source of heat is a lifesaver (literally) in a pinch.

If you don’t have a plan, start thinking about it now. And go buy your hedgehog some hand warmers.
