Time to address the elephant in the room. I think my last post about enhypen's trajectory musically has everything to do with why Heeseung left the group.
First off, it doesn't even feel real. Enhypen was the one group that I wholeheartedly believe would never split. Every single member has a place in the group and I do not believe that they can operate as anything other than 7. The dynamic of the group simply doesn't work that way. It's not a coincidence that they're the only group that barely has any friendships outside the group. This is obviously because of their ridiculously tight schedule but I also believe it is due to their closeness. This to me is the equivalent of one of the members leaving GOT7. There are certain groups in my opinion that do not work if they don't have all the members. Enhypen never gave coworkers to me and they still don't.
Now that I've got that out of the way I wanted to focus on why Heeseung is so relevant to the group. It's no secret that Enhypen was formed for Heeseung. I-LAND was there to find 6 other members to suit his style. In their earlier albums they would tune the member's voices to sound like Heeseung. Even moreso on Orange Blood you can hear the autotuning to mimic Heeseung's vocal colour. Enhypen's sound has always been synonymous with Heeseung's personal sound. You can tell when he really loves a song and when he doesn't. I also believe that Heeseung is the most music-oriented one in the group. I could chalk that up to his personal preference but I also think it has to do with his age.
There's been this conversation about idols who are idols for the sake of being popular and idols who actually enjoy music. I think Heeseung (and arguably Jay) genuinely enjoys making music. That's not to say I think the other members only care about the fame but I think they are more attuned to the commercialized music of the kpop industry instead of their own production. Which is ok. Kpop has never been original and we shouldn't act like kpop idols have a duty to be dedicated artists when it started off as a poor imitation of real artistry in the first place. However, with the last few comebacks I believe Heeseung was not happy with the quality of music they were putting out. I think Belift was focusing too much on trying to recreate the HYYH era of having complicated concepts that they neglect the actual appeal of the members.
Bringing this back to his age. Heeseung is turning 25 this year. It gets to a point where he's going to be tired of this corny boyfriend shit. I think he wants to embark on making age appropriate music and not just fan service. There is such a clear shift after Romance Untold where the music isn't the focus but rather the concept. Desire: Unleash was goonerbait damn near and everything after is basically the same thing. I think it's particularly egregious because Belift waited until Ni-ki turned legal to immediately push these "sexy" concepts outright. I find it quite ironic because I believe the songs from Romance Untold are far more intimate than anything from Desire: Unleash. Moonstruck exhibits way more desire and yearning than Bad Desire.
To stay on topic, Enhypen's fandom has become a festering chamber of touch-starved teens and young adults. There isn't anything inherently wrong with that but I think a company has to draw lines. It's ok for Enhypen to make mature music but the fan service is unnecessary and it only encourages uncomfortable interactions. As an adult, when you start to recognize that, it becomes almost impossible to ignore. Once I turned 20, it was almost like a switch went off in my brain. The mainstream kpop fandom almost immediately becomes distasteful to you because you understand that there is no genuine discourse. It's an echo chamber of ignorance that everyone upholds until they get too old and phase out of it. Then they're replaced by younger, more ignorant people. I think Heeseung had enough of not only that kind of uncomfortable environment, but also of not having autonomy as a grown man.
If you're new to kpop you might not notice but if you've been watching the industry for a while, there's always telltale signs that a group is starting to fall apart. My personal thought is if the music starts to feel like it's just following trends, it means the members have stopped caring or the company is putting all its efforts into cash grabs. At that point I already know a hiatus announcement is coming.
I know it's probably irritating for some that I'm saying the group is falling apart but it is the truth I fear. Enhypen is 7 and only 7. Heeseung's musical influence is what made Enhypen. Musically they will never have the same quality without him. If they continue as a group, the only thing the fandom is going to talk about is Heeseung leaving. Coming up on their 6th year, I don't expect any of them to renew in the future and I think it's very unfortunate. Though it's unfortunate, I do also believe the only thing kpop got right in its early days was the prevalence of groups only lasting about 5 years. When you look at the progression of many groups, especially those under big companies, it all starts to fall apart generally around the 5-6 year mark. BTS and SVT weren't under big companies when they debuted so this rule doesn't apply to them. TWICE is an exception because I think they made it a point to build individual brands for each member.
The members are so young and I think it's a shame they've met this type of bump in their career. If we're being frank, there's no way any of them can debut in a new group. And, you can call this a personal opinion, but no one other than Jay, Jungwon, and Heeseung have the potential to make standout music as solo artists. While I don't want to be super negative and downplay their talent, the reality is talent isn't what gets you by in the kpop industry. Your perception and your history makes up 90% of what the public sees of you. Having a pivotal member leave a group almost 5 and a half years into their career isn't something that you can skate past in the modern era of social media. Especially not a group like Enhypen.
Personally, I already made comments on how I felt like Enhypen was losing their colour musically. I think its unfortunate that this is the wakeup call for many fans. But I think it is commendable on Heeseung's part to pursue his goals even if he's gonna have to take some heat. I wish him and the rest of the members the best.
on the topic of enhypen's world tour. I went to their concert on i think the very first day of the US leg, and I'm gonna be 100% honest. i was pretty disappointed.
I paid $400 for my ticket, which is neither here nor there. I willing paid for it. but this was my first kpop concert and after seeing all clips of their previous tours, i was so excited to see them live. enhypen is basically the only group where I knew every single one of their songs word for word.
to get the easiest point out of the way, simply the energy was just not there. I went to the NY show on day 1 and i was only able to attend one day because I had work. frankly, i dont even think i should have to attend both days to get the full experience. sure it's not gonna be the same but I shouldn't have people telling me that they're gonna be even better the next day. imo the point of having 2 days is so people like me who can't go on certain days can still attend the next.
but yh the energy was way off. jungwon said it himself that he felt like he couldnt match our energy. which is okay imo, i know they're overworked. but there are so many ways to make up for that. for example, they had no dancers with them. it was just them dancing all their songs. that to me immediately brought the energy down. i went to txt's concert in october and the energy was just so much better and livelier, and i didnt know like 80% of the songs. i hadn't listened to txt in over 2 years atp, but just the energy from the dancers and the members was enough to keep me engaged. i dont like to compare but when im spending my hard earned money to watch someone that i like, i expect some energy back.
and my frustration is not towards enhypen. there's only so much you can do when you're pushed to the limit. like i said, i think hybe could've structured the concerts better to make up for their exhaustion. for example, to me, it felt like i was watching a music show like inkigayo and not a concert. almost all of the songs they were performing the choreo for. i just dont think that's necessary. you have a secondary stage and a runway, i think they could've utilized them a lot more and cut out some of the choreo. tbh the concert felt very sterile and robotic. just perform some songs, go to the secondary stage once or twice, perform more, say our remarks, then encore.
i paid for this concert because those older tours were so much more interactive and it truly looked like they were enjoying the stage with the fans. pass the mic is the biggest example. i was expecting the performance to be super hype, i didnt need to see the choreo for that, i just wanted to enjoy the atmosphere. i honestly dont remember the performace clearly but there was just a lack of audience interaction to really create the environement i associate with pass the mic. plus the absence of dancers just made it fall flat. this is the US yk, plus it's NY. yes, a lot of the fans are terrible and just on their phones, but this is a drill song...and you're in NY. i dont gaf about the choreo. get some dancers out here and have some fun with the audience.
moreover, i just think the setlist itself was just poorly constructed. i know it's technically the fate tour, but like those songs are old asf. get something new in there. they literally only performed bad desire. like wtf. one new song??? i know that other US cities got helium, but even that is unfair. why are you changing up the setlist like that. i understand wanting it to be new, but you give us a song you've been performing for like 2 years and then give other cities brand new songs?? we got no outside, no helium, not even fucking daydream. but the asia leg of the tour gets lighthearted moments, sections of them being more candid, and more thought out performances and stages with dance breaks.
i cant lie that's a terrible first impression to make. and it really pissed me tf off. i understand that they're more comfortable in asia but i also dont gaf. without the US, enhypen wouldn't be half as big as they are now. all their popular songs are Black American genres. the US deserves more than what we were given. i hope hybe cuts that shit out.
i went to the txt concert after that and literally almost every song was new and they actually looked like they were enjoying themselves. i paid way less for my ticket and enjoyed myself way more. it looked like there was actual effort put into every stage.
like i said i know this isn't enhypen's fault, exhaustion isn't something to play with. I would hate to see them be injured trying to overexert themselves. but also this is your job. there needs to be provisions so that this kind of disparity with quality isn't so noticeable. i really hope hybe gets themselves together for the next tour because it's not a good look and honestly so disrespectful to fans who are the reason they're even able to tour in the first place.
idk if people really care about opinions on tumblr but now that we're a few months out from desire:unleash, I have a lot of opinions I wanted to get off my chest. this is a very long post, sorry in advance.
first, I personally think that was enhypen's weakest album creatively. i dont think any of the songs are bad. i listen to all of them, except the tt. but for comparison, I think that dark blood and orange blood are their best albums altogether. the quality of not only the songwriting, but the artistic vision is completely different with these 2 albums. i also love romance:untold.
for the same reasons i also believe manifesto was a pretty weak album, it was clear that they just wanted enhypen to have some hype songs so they did pass the mic and paradoxxx invasion. but the rest of the album is pretty weak compared to how it starts. love tfw and shout out but when the album is only 5 songs, i feel like you cant start it off with drill and hiphop and then immediately mellow it out so much.
but back to desire:unleash maybe it was due the hype from coachella but I felt like it was gonna be a lot more impressive than i thought. however, the songs are not cohesive and honestly idek what the running theme was for the album. to me it felt like hybe was focusing on putting out trendy songs rather than something to fit enhypen's artistic image.
i've always admired how every enhypen song somehow tied it's way back to their vampire concept, as well as just sounded very in line with the image that they've made for themselves. i dont believe that every song on the album has to sound the same or be the same genre, but they need to blend into each other at least. dark blood and orange blood are pretty cohesive genre wise but romance untold is pretty all over the place and it still comes together very beautifully.
i feel like they baited and switched me with the concept photos a bit. coachella was crazy, it gave the vibe of enhypen maturing. when i saw the album name teaser and the tagline i was expecting something a lot more mature coming from them. especially with those 50 shades of grey ass concept photos. i dont think i was being too unreasonable to think the songs would've had more intimate themes. im not saying they had to go straight to some nct, weeknd levels of freak, but it felt very lackluster. especially when they have other songs from before that were already in their own way to being thirsty asf. i mean there's fever, criminal love, fatal trouble, sacrifice, shit even moonstruck. if you put all those songs on an album, i would consider that more fitting for the album name.

bad desire - 3/10 - I actually don't really like this song. i dont like the mixing that they have going on with their voices. as everyone noticed, it gave Justin Timberlake reheated nachos. and enha never gave reheated nachos. i see what they were going for but imo they already have songs that have themes of yearning and desire that fit their concept without reheating any nachos like i said before. very disappointing.
along with the autotune, i didnt really like the lyrics. they were kinda cringe, and not in the normal cringe way that you always get from kpop. just kinda disingenuous and they sounded almost detached when they were singing. also i dont know wtf is going on with enhypen but this 2 min title track shit needs to go. why are your b sides longer than the title track. the song imo just isn't interesting, the arragement is boring, the lyrics are unimpressive, the vocal performances are ok. heeseung's vocals sound out of place because of the vocal mixing. it sounds like it could've been a b side on dark blood.
also to side track, i thought the mv was so bad. it looked so cheap and like they just put a whole bunch of shit together. there was just a lot going on with ugle cgi that doesn't make sense for the average enhypen fan. the sets looked like something out of sharkboy and watergirl. i understand that they were trying to expand on the lore, but honestly nobody gaf. it was just so incredibly low budget and visually unpleasing compared to all their other mvs. it sticks out like a sore thumb. plus the styling was so ugly too. like wtf does blue and white have to do with the theme of the entire mv. if i were new to enhypen and saw that i would've thought it was a hot mess.
outside - 4/10 - it's ok. ngl i think that because fans knew it would have a good choreo, they were more inclined to convince themselves to like it. and that's ok. there are a lot of songs that i didn't start liking until i saw the choreo. other than that, the song itself isn't anything special. it's just ok.
helium - 9/10 - there's a reason this song has so much hype. the best song on the album by far. the fact that jay was involved in it makes it clear why. this song makes you understand enhypen musically. it's very reminiscent of their dimension:dilemma days. this song felt very in line with the standards i hold for enha. i love the vocals, i love the guitar, the song is fun, it's light, and i like the melodies. that being said, i dont think it really fits what i thought the album was gonna be like. sure there's desire there, but as an english speaker, when i hear desire unleashed, i think of something a bit more intimate (not necessarily sexual).
too close - 7/10 - i like it. it's cute, good vocals, but imo not very memorable. just like a good study song to have in the background. i also don't think it fit the name of the album. nothing much else left to say.
loose - 9/10 -i love loose. it kinda gives Jonas brothers but not in the reheated nachos way, but just the vocal style of the song. very DNCE, very Nick Jonas. I liked it when it came out, it was a genre that we haven't really heard from mainstream kpop groups. i liked the lyrics, it was good for a single.
overall this album is like a 5/10. painfully mediocre.
all that being said. i do hope this next album, enhypen can have more artistic freedom. this album felt kind of like a placeholder just to get in some new songs before the tour. speaking of the tour, i have a whole rant on that as well. i felt like their US leg of the tour was so unfairly set up. anyways, i hope for something more authentic with their next comeback. i always look forward to enhypen albums because i know i'm gonna be impressed by how they can fit their vampire theme into so many different genres and creative lenses. this album just didnt make the cut for me, but i wish well for the future.
