and it gets to a point you’re finally giving up hope and deciding it probably hurts less not to keep trying and yearning to go back to it or hold out hope. to the extent you’re wanting your former flame not to remember you anymore in the same way you’re trying not to remember the past connection & feelings. better to just neuralyse the memories

only for your person eventually and unexpectedly to return and try to get close to you again. after so long they even express to you that their once overwhelming love & admiration & care & interest is rekindled and still there on their side

and on paper it’s ridiculous to accept this insane late-in-the-day proposal and open your cold empty tired heart fortress to all this again. especially at your big ages and after all you’ve both been through. it’s not the 80s/90s/y2k anymore….

but….against all expectation you have now got the only thing you ever regretted losing back in your arms. things like that don’t just happen everyday or to most people. you don’t even really deserve this second chance and maybe your person doesn’t either. yet here it is

so you resolve that even though life is short and you’ve endured so much hurt & loneliness? what you share with your person is the real thing and your lover coming back makes that agonising long while alone waiting worth it in the end. and better yet you actually want to stick around and see it through this time
