Sera held onto her coffee for dear life, as she made her way to one of the occupied tables, her empty palm finding the surface as she quickly took a seat. “Look, i know this sounds odd and i’m pretty sure i wouldn’t normally ask you since i can handle things like this myself, but somehow i don’t feel like yelling anymore today.” She said with a slight roll of her eyes as her hand clenched tighter around her cup. “That weird guy over there can’t take a hint when a girl’s uninterested and refuses to leave the table. Even after i straight up said ‘no’ and 'leave me the hell alone’ and i dont know how much clearer than that i can be, so just – is it okay if i sit here for a while? please say it is You are my ONLY hope..”

Engrossed in her Instagram stalking, Heidi didn’t even look up from her phone as she was joined abruptly at her table. 73 weeks deep was serious business and Heidi wasn’t about to let her finger slip into a double tap on screen again. Music flooding her mind, Heidi tapped her heel, bouncing her leg that was crossed over her knee as she scrolled through the memories of a musician she was absolutely not obsessed with. After a few minutes, Heidi felt the uncomfortable weight of eyes on her and she quickly looked up, startled at the sight of someone sitting at the small table with her. Pulling one of her headphones out by the cable, Heidi smiled across the table. Having not heard anything the girl said, Heidi simply started to put her headphone back in. She hesitated and looked up again, confused, “sorry-- did you say something?”

Heidi wandered the streets of St. Augustine with her headphones plugged in and her music up loud enough to drown out the familiar sounds of the city. She had heard enough of the random conversations of strangers and the whistles of police officers on the corners of busy streets--  so instead, she filled her mind with music. Music that made her feel at ease, as if her body was filled with a light kind of something that lifted her, helping her to float just above the chilled concrete.  And across the city she would float. Blonde hair appearing golden under the orange street lights that reflected in the still water of puddles flooded against the curbs of the cobblestone streets. But something that glistened and twinkled brighter than the reflection of light on water caught Heidi’s eye. Taking a second glance, she stepped down into the street, bending to reach into the shallow puddle that had pooled against the curb. “Woah...” She breathed out, rubbing her thumb over the string of diamonds that formed a bracelet, water dripping from the jewelry.  Lights flashed and created orbs of bright, blue light in her vision. Squinting at the headlights, Heidi brought her forearm over her brow to shield her eyes as the driver laid on the horn of the vehicle. The driver slowed and once realized Heidi was actually clear of the road, sped off. Clutching the bracelet in her hand, Heidi looked up in utter surprise as she glanced around to see if anyone else just witnessed what she just experienced.                     ( open )
