In Odin's Name....
.... why is there mistletoe everywhere I turn today? The smell of it is nauseating. "all-heal", my backside.... *huffs*
Mother says I'm exaggerating, it's just a little plant, but still....
Please reblog if you are a mythological RPer.
I’m having a hard time finding mythological based characters and it would sincerely be appreciated if you could reblog this. Once I get a definite list of URLs, I’ll put it on my blog as a masterlist. Your character can be Percy Jackson based, Norse, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, it doesn’t matter. If your character has a mythological base, please reblog this.
((Norse Pantheon, myth-based.... <3 ))
"Hela? It’s Höðr, I hope I am not disturbing you?"
He stopped where he was, listening, trying to track where she might be. Of all his family and loved ones, she was the most difficult to trace. “I thought I would come for a visit. If this is not a good time, I can come back.”
Precariously and deathly silent, she rose like a corpse clambering from it’s place of rest, “You’re very fortunate, you know.” Her words were spoken with a softness, familiarity ill afforded to most, “You’re one of very few to have ever caught me on a day off, one that I don’t mind sharing with company.
"I am honoured," he said without a trace or intention of irony. "Thank you." Höðr meant the words with a sincerity not generally given. After all, he knew he made most people feel uncomfortable; few really liked winter, after all, and even fewer still appreciated darkness. They seldom had the courage to come right out and say it, though. But Hel had always seemed different in that regard; if she did not want his company she said so, in a way he had yet to take amiss. And when she did not mind, as was apparently the case now... well, she said so with a wry honesty that he appreciated.
"I truly did not mean to interrupt a time of repose for you, dear lady. If welcome, I am glad to spend time with you."
Shrill air swept up dirt that spiralled back to the ground with ease and the sun stood above all that the park offered shelter to. Hel sat alone in the middle of the grass area, watching the opaque water in the pond ripple and reverberate. It wouldn’t have been long until she was required, to guide a soul to her home. But for now she relinquished an exasperated sigh and allowed the music of trees singing in the wind to bring her, if even temporary, serenity. It was shortlived, however, as the scrunching of grass beneath heavy feet drew her attentions back to a reality most unkind, “Who’s there?”

You are our kinswoman, Lady, and I cannot imagine you being anything but welcome here in my father’s halls. I would dare anyone to say you have no right to rest and be free!
*Höðr absently brushes at the chips and curls of wood he is certain are sprinkled down the front of his tunic. He’s never been one to make a great show of appearance, though the servants who attend him generally make sure he’s at least tidy—and he hates to make his family sigh at the sight of him. He smiles wryly.*
We’ll tell them you are working, if anyone is fool enough to ask. You’re helping a blind man ‘see’ a wolf well enough to carve one—perhaps someday I can meet one of your battle mounts in person with your permission, instead of sneaking to touch one as I did when I was a child.
That is a kind, if not someone naive way to put it. Not all see it that way Höðr. *She smiled at him. It was true that she would probably not be challenged, but there were some faces among the Aesir that she could live happily without ever seeing again. Höðr’s father being one of them.*
I think you could get on just fine without me, but I would love to sit here and keep you company. *Her smile widened when he spoke of her wolves.* Aye, maybe one day they will let you. It is not my permission to give, but theirs.
Well--I have been told that I am sometimes a kind but naïve person, *Höðr replied in his calm way, smiling wryly.* I know he is not always the easiest person to get along with, but in reality, what would Odin do without you and your Valkyrja?
*He moved his fingers carefully along the back of the little carving to properly find its flagged tail. Holding the knife by the blade near to the point, he deftly began carving thin lines to mimic the thick coat of a proper wolf.* I would like to visit them again, the wolves. I remember being so drawn to their calls and cries--I was very young and people kept watch over me all the time, except when they thought I was asleep. I waited until it was quiet, then I climbed out my window and down the vines. I followed the calls until I found them--the silence was deafening when a whole pack of wolves went silent at once. *He smiles at the memory.* They seemed to know me. A few of them licked my face; they allowed me to touch them, but then three of them herded me home. Nevertheless, it remains one of my happiest childhood memories.
((Why yes, Höðr does mean a lot to me. <3 I wanted to share this with you all. This is a gorgeous horn made for me on commission by a craftsperson on Etsy; she was the perfect choice for SO many reasons. We designed it together. The second pic shows Höðr's name in runes carved into the actual horn (which is big...) along with mistletoe sprigs. The runes are Hagalaz, hail, the controlled chaos that leads to harmony; Othila, ancestral property and inheritance, that which holds one's spiritual heritage; Dagaz, dawn, the breakthrough or awakening, growth and release; and Raido, the wagon, harbinger of travel, journeys both physical and spiritual, the Dance of Life. The green leather bands slip off and are used to carry the horn. Carved into the bands are some Ravens of Odin, and these words: "heilsá er kvað, heilsá er kann (Hail to the speaker, hail to the one who understands)". This is Verse 164 of the Hávamál. The words are the inspiration for my RP blog.)) ((Anyway, just wanted to share! Hail to the Winter King, and Happy Solstice!! <3 ))

I suppose that is one of several things I am certainly known for: my hearing. *Höðr lifts one wry eyebrow.* Of course Thor makes it easy for all of us; with his duties I daresay he doesn’t need to be quiet.
*The lack of a promise makes Höðr pause.* Is there warring among the children in Midgard? Getting it out of their systems before the snows come, perhaps?
No, no. [Tyr shakes his head with a faint smile] No. Nothing like that. I do not know where my duties will take me next and I cannot promise that I will be there only to find out I must away for a bit. I would feel bad. So, thus far, do not expect me to show. I will certainly try, though.
Well, I am glad to hear that, at least. Not often being allowed on a battlefield despite my odd skills as an archer, I still do not recall them as happy places. All should be happy at the Solstice. *Höðr draws himself up in pretend lordliness.* I, as King of Winter, command it should be so. *Then he laughs a little, with a wry smile.* Regardless--I will be glad of it, if you are able to be there. It is good to have brothers.

I am as well as usual, *Höðr replied with a dip of his head.* Thank you for asking. Of course you may sit with me, I would welcome your company. I haven’t had the pleasure in some time—I daresay you have been busy.
*He raised his face to the wind and smiled slightly.* All the Nine Worlds seem busy, lately. The wind is placid, but it buzzes with portent like a bee’s hive. I wonder why that can be.
Mmm, indeed. [he murmured softly as he plopped down beside the other. a content sigh blew past his lips and he drew his knees up casually so he could rest his hands atop them]
A lot happens all across the Nine. ‘Tis difficult to say whether what you feel is merely the lives of living souls or if there is, perhaps, something going on. I am afraid I am not nearly as perceptive as you are. I do not believe anyone is.
I am not certain how perceptive I am by comparison, say, with the All-Father or far-seeing Heimdall, *Höðr replied quietly, with a lift of one eyebrow.* It could simply be that I listen. I am not distracted by the physical beauties of the Worlds, so other things become precious: scent, sound, taste... *He tilted his head toward the sound of Loki's voice.* I have often found the sound of your voice to be very interesting. In its way, your voice is beautiful.

A Blessed Solstice to you all....
... from the King of Winter. May it be a time of peace, reconciliation, calm, quiet introspection, and joyous celebration.
And may the new year be kind to us all.

*The winds are wild and much seems to be happening somewhere in the universe, as Höðr sits quietly listening under a tree. He hears the sound of someone approaching, and lifts one eyebrow.*
Kinsman… good evening to you. How fares my father’s blood-brother?
((Thanks for the follow!))
He fares well. And yourself, Höðr? Such a lovely day, perfect for sitting outdoors, no?
[Loki’s lips twisted into that menacing scarred smile, not that it could be seen at the moment]
May I sit with you?

I am almost always well. Except when I am not. *He smiles a bit puckishly and tilts his head toward his brother.* Things are going well—and you sound tired. I knew it was you because you walk with great deliberation and purpose, while Thor seems to like trying to sneak up on me. As if someone his size could sneak. *Still, Höðr knows better than to challenge the Thunderer on that score, because Thor takes challenges with deadly earnest….*
It’s nearly the Solstice. Will you be home for the feast?
[Höðr’s first response managed to bring a grin to the war God’s face, albeit a small one]
I am always tired, brother. [but not in the sense that he required sleep or that his stamina was low. No, certainly not that sort of tired.]
Thor attempts to sneak up on everyone and he fails miserably. Though I cannot imagine why he would attempt with you, of all people. He knows he is doomed to fail in such an instance. [which, it was true. Thor was not the most graceful being in all the Nine and he made more ruckus than the average being even when he was attempting to be quiet.]
Mm, I know not. Maybe, but I am not making any promises.

I will take your word for the creature’s looks, Lady, *he says with a bit of a smile.* I can see her with my hands, and she seems to be a decent portrait of what I have experienced. *He pats the wall on which he’s sitting.* I’m generally quiet, why not sit for a while and take a breath? If anyone has the temerity to question you, tell them we were talking of important matters.
*Freyja smiles and takes a seat on a nearby stool.* Why thank you Hodr. Though what we would have to talk about that would be so important as to steal me away from my valkyrja I do not know. *Her smile widened.* But I doubt man will question you in such matters. At least when I am at Sessrumnír no one dares to question me and I am free to do as I please. *She let out a sigh.* It is why I seldom leave my home unless I am working.
