Plaything Review, (Spoilers and a long ass post)

Hello hello, insane person here

I’m gonna be honest I’m not surprised about how this Bandersnatch sequel came out, in all honesty it’s not a sequel at all it just “BANDERNSATCH BUT AGAIN.” and a thing or two changed. But if I were to rate it based on it being a sequel I’d put it at like a 2/5, with it being its own episode a 4.5/5 but that’s only due to how much I’ve hyper fixated on this piece of media since forever.

Cameron’s character is, as expected, basically just Stefan but they like turned it up to 10. He’s wearing headphones that are playing his what I’d assume is code, stutters a lot, bro just wants to draw (obviously to show is little goobers to the world but y’know), he got the gamer flavor of autism, and the guy CANNOT keep eye contact.

This also goes along to say that the story hits a bunch of the same story beats in Bandersnatch aswell, the same parental issues as Stefan, ashtray kill, goes to jail, chops up a body in a bath tub, goth clerk, Colin makes a video game reference for no reason, etc. which is fine I guess???? But I feel it ruins the story a bit, like don’t get me wrong I don’t exactly hate the references, I just wish they actually took it a little more seriously.

Lump is Peter in this scenario. He’s one of the main driving forces that moves the story forwards, and is also Cameron’s only friend apparently??? But also I just find it funny how out of giving him an actual name they called him fucking LUMP, like LUMP??? Really??? Alright… Anyways, they make a knockoff LSD scene with him and Cameron as they play Street Fighter, which could be a reference to Striking Vipers if you want it to be lmao. But it the same lighting and all that. But also I kinda feel bad for Lump a little bit because he was just like “Wow video game, let me play a little bit.” But also Cameron clearly covered it up and Lump shouldn’t have messed with it. Then he gets ashtrayed which, yeah…

Thakur’s wig got fucking bandersnatched and he’s fucking bald now with a swag ass ponytail, which, fire. Still has a bit of comedic relief but is a bit out of character. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still great he’s just getting fucking bullied. Although I definitely like how he’s very supportive of Colin and clearly cares about him, even if it’s just from a business standpoint, he’s made sure his mental insanity doesn’t exactly go on the news despite everything even if Colin’s denied him from the looks of it.

Colin Ritman. THE Colin Ritman. The whole reason why I screamed during the middle of math class. Get fucking 3 minutes of screen time. Which… ok??? Colin’s whole point as a character is to just kick start it and then fuck off. Which is fine… BUT WILL POLUTER ISN’T FUCKING STARRING, MR.BROOKER WHY DID YOU LIE TO ME?!?! Anyways, Colin isn’t too bad of a character but definitely feels downgraded from Bandersnatch. I like how much info we can get from Colin on his desk and walls and whatnot, but maybe I’ll talk about that in another post… The things I’m mainly pissed about is the fucking cliffhanger we were left on, like what do you mean he went fucking gaga? Why did he have his breakdown? I would like to know more about that please.

Colin as a character in both Bandersnatch and Plaything feels so vague, which is good and bad, but it just feels like we don’t know anything about him or something we can based him off of. I get that’s why some people like him, but it feels like the writers don’t exactly know what to do with him except use him move the plot forward. I love Colin, I know a lot of people do but his mentalist mindset isn’t exactly developed fully and it pisses me off, like why’d you reference Sonic? Pac-Man made sense but god. I do see the difference in him being more mean in Plaything whether it was his breakdown or not, and his light plot points but it’s still all so vague.

Sorry I ranted a bit…

Anyways, I genuinely enjoyed this season as a whole, it’s really bringing itself back on its feet, and although Plaything might just be an outlier for Netflix to prompt there games and crap, it’s kinda of what Bandersnatch was as well. Overall it’s a fun watch, even if the ending is vague as hell, it like alright.

Black Mirror Playthings

Made this point in a comment then realised I wanted to say it properly

Spoilers ahead for Bandersnatch and Playthings

I both loved it and was disappointed in it for a few reasons, mostly how under utilised Colin was as a character with him being reduced to a plot device with no real personal bearing on the narrative (yes he made the game but it was only significant that it was him because of his role in Bandersnatch, in Playthings he could easily be swapped out for any strange game designer.

Colin was really just a cameo there to make it seem less shitty that Playthings shares similarities with Bandersnatch) one thing I did like was the reason behind Colin's breakdown being subtly hinted at, I just wish they went into it properly and fully paralleled it with Cameron's decline into obsessive insanity.

There's a line said that Colin was ranting about Basilisks which is almost certainly referring to Roko's Basilisk - a thought experiment about an ai so complex and vengeful that it punishes everyone that knew it would be made who either didn't help or actively set back it's development meaning that just knowing about it is dangerous and interacting with is far more so, this implies that his breakdown was him realising that the thronglets were capable of becoming far too complex and he wanted to stop them from becoming a full on Roko's Basilisk to protect people.

I seriously wish it was properly touched on rather than a tiny allusion as it could have made the episode significantly better by paralleling Colin's understanding of the thronglets with Cameron's perception of them with Colin initially seeing them as a tool to better humanity with and realising they're far more likely to seek revenge once they can comprehend violence which due to their worlds being marketed as a videogame is inevitable vs Cameron seeing them as something to aid and protect then helping them become something to 'aid and protect' humanity in return.

I would have loved to watch Colin's experiences with the throng so so much, however I do really love Cameron's role as an unreliable narrator which couldn't have worked with the format change required to showcase both experiences - Cameron's perception of the throng as something to love and devote himself to was interesting and I loved that developing into his apology for exposing them to humanity's instinct to harm what we think of as lesser.

I also found it incredibly interesting watching Cameron alluding to the ways that his connection to the Throng changed him and watching the differences between who he was and who he became especially since technically that's the point of the 'game', it was made to help humans become something more.

Colin's strange behaviour in the episode can be chalked up to a few things. Out of universe, it's obviously been a while since 2017-2018 when his character was first written and in universe it's been a decade since the events of Bandersnatch would have taken place and a mystery mental breakdown he had (quite possibly relating to said events) and since then he's been on some kind of medication intended to keep him from another one.

However. I find it far more interesting to toy with the idea that it's the thronglets that have changed him, he would have been working on the 'game' for a long time by his appearance in the episode and his line "You'll come to appreciate the company of the throng over time" seems to come from experience and his statements that even he can't predict the ways their code will evolve and that they developed the noises (which significantly he recognises as language) unprompted imply that he's spent a lot of time with them in their current iteration. That and the fact he's been known to take acid imply (albeit loosely) that he's experienced some level of communication with them. His incredibly specific request to show the game to just Cameron as well as his choice to leave Camron alone (allowing him to steal a copy without Colin being at all implicated in the eyes of the company) coming from the thronglets' desire to expand the throng makes significantly more sense than he just did that.

If that presumption is correct then the implications of Colin's subsequent breakdown are incredibly intriguing - him having some small moment of clarity and realising what the throng really wanted and what it would mean, realising that he had created a Roko's Basilisk, destroying, ranting, and raving trying to stop it's spread but knowing he would be unable to without Cameron's copy just hoping that scrapping the 'game' and every other copy out there - trying to get the message of what it really is out there ultimately just being labelled as crazy and experiencing another breakdown (to be fair a guy with a history of mental health issues suddenly scrapping his most impressive product, destroying every single copy, and ranting about Basilisks does sound like he's having another breakdown when you don't know what he's on about)

I seriously wish we could have at least seen a glimpse of Colin having an insane mess of computer parts like Camron's so it didn't look like I'm pulling this out of my ass. Give me like a year to actually focus enough and I'll make a fic out of this I swear.

Plaything Spoilers!

Tbh, I was kind of underwhelmed by the episode. I haven't actually seen any Black Mirror episodes (other than Bandersnatch) before, so maybe that could've prepared me?

It just felt really short-lived, like there was more things to unpack but they just didn't. The 'Lump' guy for instance. I sorta liked his character. Unnerving.

I needed more Colin, Mo, and just Tuckersoft in general.

And where was Stefan? No mentions at all.

I get it was a cautionary tale about ai, but the ending was unsatisfying.

Anyway, the best thing about it was the game. I've only gotten to stage 2 but realised what I actually need to do. Time to re-analyse those screenshots and notice them in-game!
