Left: Kehinde Wiley Barack Obama, 2018
Right: Amy Sherald Michelle Obama, 2018
Wiley’s paintings are always incredibly, almost TOO, conventionally aesthetically pleasing and this one is nothing short of a masterpiece that will stand the test of time.
But I want to talk about Michelle Obama’s. Take a minute to look through Sherald’s other portraits and see how this fits. I love the slow burn of it. The color choices are subtle and powerful, just like her. It’s quiet, but she’s not loud and that is the brilliance to me, of this piece. It isn’t the most visually faithful representation of a face and a personality we are so familiar with, but let it sink in and it really speaks to who (I believe) she is. It is strong, vibrant, soft and powerful.
