Worldbuilding Jotunheim: Food Chain Fundamentals
When it comes to food chains as we know them, every single one starts with an an autotroph, organisms capable of directly taking energy from an environmental source and storing it, then using it to produce more complex organic chemicals and power metabolic processes. Most famously on Earth, we have plants, which utilize photosynthesis, a metabolic process whereby solar energy is stored in chains of carbohydrates, releasing oxygen. Some photosynthetic organisms use organic sources of carbon rather than atmospheric carbon dioxide, or use a variation that does not release oxygen, or use other elements in place of water to serve as the source of electrons used in the process. Ultimately, photosynthesis is basically carbon dioxide + (electron source) + light energy = (energy-storing compound) + (a few waste materials). Organisms capable of this process are called phototrophs.
In addition to plants, there are other phototrophic organisms that are capable of surviving in much harsher environments. Cyanobacteria, blue-green algae, and lichens all come to mind. Plants are simply the most complex and most evolutionarily recent- in fact, animals evolved before true plants did.
Additionally, we have chemotrophs, the chemosynthetic organisms. These organisms use chemicals to get everything they need to synthesize organic chemicals and store/obtain energy. Such organisms can be entirely capable of living completely disconnected from any sort of solar energy at all- most famously, deep-sea hydrothermal vents (ie, black smokers and white smokers) support enormous colonies of bacteria that use the chemicals and heat released by the vent to fuel metabolic processes. These bacteria form the basis of incredible food chain clustered around these vents that support worms, crabs, and other, higher life-forms.
(Fun fact: This black smoker is part of a collection of smokers in the mid-Atlantic ocean nicknamed âLokiâs Castleâ)
For life to have evolved and to continue surviving on the harsh surface of Jotunheim, similar cornerstone organisms must exist. Thereâs no two ways about it- the biological niche of the autotroph must be filled to support any sort of life.
Which brings us to what organisms are most likely to fill those niches on Jotunheim.
On the surface, lichens and single-celled algae that grow on bare stone or in the ice itself. Given that Yggdrasil seems to impose a certain convergence of evolution of the creatures living in it (humanoids as the dominant sentient species, a guard creature on Jotunheim that follows the general body plan of a large vertebrate, horses on Asgard(!)) we can guess that the Jotun equivalent of lichens and algae are fairly similar to those found on Midgard, though adapted for a consistently colder climate.
Lichens in particular could provide a valuable food source, not just for animals but perhaps the Jotuns themselves. It would be simple enough to cultivate lichen for consumption, or for herd animals (akin to reindeer) to browse on. Lichens do not necessarily require soil to grow on- many Midgardian species grow quite well on bare stone, which would be very useful on Jotunheim.
We do see that at least some Jotuns possess pointed teeth. If these are natural, and not filed for cultural or war purposes, then we have a hint that the Jotun diet contains a fair amount of meat. In general, it is easier to support a population on animals that are raised rather than hunted in the wild because you can guarantee a constant supply. Perhaps the conjectured âreindeerâ, grazing on the lichens and herded by watchful Jotuns?
Algae could easily grow in blooms on the surface of, under, or even in ice that gets decent access to light. Algae on the surface could be scraped off by other organisms to eat, while others may be adapted to break off and chew up mouthfuls of ice in order to eat the algae within. Algae beneath ocean ice can be scraped off and collected by small creatures akin to krill, which then get eaten by larger creatures.
Hydrothermal vents- black smokers and white smokers on ocean floors, and hot springs on the surface, can also support autotrophs. While most of Jotunheimâs terrestrial lifeforms, adapted for the extreme cold as they must be, would likely be unable to venture near hot springs for food, the sea floor is unlikely to drop below 0C, due to salts and other minerals dissolved in it as well as the pressure. In these regions, you could conceivably find entire ecosystems based around the hot, mineral-rich vents. The bottom of the food chain here would be bacteria that form dense mats around the vents.
My apologies for forgetting this for ages!
I tend to think that a lot of the life forms on Jotunheim are based in the seas, since there are those areas of varying colour on the planet that could correspond to seas. With the Yggdrasill-imposed similarity and the cold climate, it is quite likely that equivalents of many of our polar animals have found it relatively easy to evolve, but I hadnât thought about lichens and chemotrophs and so on.
They appear to keep the stones of Svartgardr very clear, which is interesting; it implies time and will to do it. (for other readers, silvergryphon has also talked basics and the stone of Jotunheim. Go read!)

Why there are less female Jötnar
When the Jötnar were new, they were far more savage than they are now and at the time there were only the two; of Fire and of Frost. The Jötnar of Fire and of Frost showed their savagery not only toward their environment and that which shared their worlds with them, but against one another. Males fought males, and dominated females. Consent was not even a word.
Ymirâs solution to this problem initially worsened it; he lowered the birth rate of females. In the doing of this, he made them something to be handled with more care, which made the males even more vicious in their acquisition, but also in a twisted way it made them protect the females. It was once this new system had been established that Ymir created the second part of his plan; the Soul and Heart bonds.
With the Frost Jötnar, this worked as intended. They found themselves drawn to certain individuals and so formed alliances and clans, friendships. They were drawn to certain females, and became docile when bonded to them, the need to serve their female of such importance to the point where they would tend to not even war with other males she chose. Thus were the rules and titles that governed bonding created; half of instinct and half of design to make a system that worked.
With the Fire Jötnar however, this two part plan fatally backfired. Far too vicious to be tamed by bonding and enraged by the idea of being in any way subservient, these males instead brutally savaged both their own females and any males that had managed to be âtamedâ by bonding. At the time they shared the same world with those of Ice, and so they were chased off world to the one that ended up serving them far better. Muspelheim turned out to be perfect for those of Fire, as they could craft more of themselves from the lava and no longer had a need for females at all. The last female Fire Jötnar died, and only males of the species remain.
Ymir intended to give back to the Frost equal birth rate between genders again, but before he could do this, the sons of Bor, Odin, Vili and Ve murdered him. Though Ymir still holds a great amount of power, he no longer can undo this which he did, as it would require a physical form.

What lives below
Jötunheim is a dangerous world where pretty much everything wants to, or is capable of killing Frost Giants. Not even the water is safe. Now given how cold the planet is, and the fact that the ice covering their bodies of water can be up to 15 feet thick, one would think the only problem would be getting at the water, but this is hardly the case.
Enormous beasts live in the depths, beasts that can punch through the ice to attack prey on the surface. Detected though vibrations, they tend to seek areas where the ice isnât as thick to strike. In spite of what the Jötnar think, they arenât large enough on their own to create the right vibrations to gather the attention of one of these beasts, though a large group moving close together might.
The danger also lies in that snow has often covered the ice, masking its presence. Though again worse for large creatures or well condensed groups, the snow means the attacked has no time to see it coming before it happens.
There are no names for these beasts, they are simply terrors from the depths.
South Sea pearls are among the largest commercially harvested cultured pearls in the world. The worldâs largest round South Sea pearl is 24mm in diameter. Currently, Indonesia is the most important producer of South Sea pearls in the 9-12mm range while Australia produces most of the larger sizes. Australiaâs first pearl farm was established on the Northwest coast at Kuri Bay. The silver lip (Pinctada maxima) oyster is the main oyster used for cultivation and it can produce up to four pearls inserted at different times with a period of growth may ranging between 1 to 2 years. Australia tends to produce silvery white pearls while the gold lipped oyster produces creamy, yellow, and golden pearls in the more tropical waters of Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

An Unexpected Surprise
âA listenerâs journey is taken just before or after a shaman becomes a shaman.â Byleistr explained, expecting that not all stars would know the termâif indeed any did. They just shared stories with him without asking where he had come from, so it was entirely possible. He smiled and shook his head. âI donât think they do, become rock and dust. The things we call falling stars probably arenât stars at all, but pieces of rock that were a planet or something at one point. But maybe sometimesâŠ.I donât know.â
He clucked his tongue then. âMost of us canât hear the starsongs.â He said. âThatâs why we need the shamans, to hear the songs of the stars and tell everyone else whatâs being said. I have the gift, but my twin doesnât.â He paused and his expression saddened. âYmir didnât grant him any magic at all. I got all of it.â
Yvaine listened to Byleistrâs explanation and hummed quietly, it was interesting. While she didnât always watch the people on Earth she was still fascinated by them sometimes. That fascination seemed to transfer here too. She nodded and looked down at her ankle. âWe do not last when there is not enough belief or magic to keep our shape.â She explained to him, it was why she couldnât cross the Wall, however, it seemed like that was changingâslowly mind you, but still changing.
Brows rose at that new information, really these people were so interesting! Her face fell slightly as well, feeling a sudden need to try and help, although what could sheâher expression brightened and she shifted on the bench. âI cannot help with giving him magic, mostly because I donât have any to give,â or at least she didnât consider anything she had magical, âBut, if he wants he could hear at least the song of a star.â
Byleistr brightened. âI think he would like that.â He agreed. âHearing your song, I mean. I donât actually know if heâd want magic, even if you could grant it to him. The only way he should get magic is if he gets it from me if I die before him, but that rarely happens and I donât exactly plan on getting myself killed.â He shrugged.Â
âSo, I never thought to ask this while my spirit was among you, and I hope it isnât a rude question but....our legends say the stars are drops of Ymirâs blood. Obviously youâre a someone in your own right, but....where do you come from? Are you drops of his blood given life? Something else?â He hoped he wasnât asking an impolite question, but a listenerâs journey was just that; you listened. He didnât actually get to ask many questions.

Natural Zircon is known for its distinctive beauty and occurrence in a broad range of colors and has sustained the interest of gemologists for years owing to its variation of specific gravity and refractive indices. But most curious and less known are the tenebrescent properties of some zircons. Also known as reversible photochromism, tenebrescence refers to the ability of minerals to change color when exposed to the natural radiation in sunlight.
Falling into Place
âYes.â Helblindi said and sighed before he sat down again, figuring his height might be an issue, but not willing to reveal he could do anything about it yet. âLoki is my youngest brother, which was a big enough shock for me and my family. We had thought him killed at the end of the war with Asgard, butâŠ.evidently not.â He pursed his lips, eyeing his nephew. âI imagine this is a shock, to find out this way that you carry Jötun blood.â
He glanced down, remembering what he had been doing before they had startled him and made a bit of a disgruntled face. He knew Aesir and Vanir didnât treasure these sorts of things the way Jötun did, and offering Ullr a shiny after this shock wasnât really the right thing to do regardless. That would be like trying to placate a child, and Helblindi was well aware he was facing a man. He returned his gaze to Ullr, but found himself at a loss as to what to say next.
It was a shock, a big one which Ullr was quite unhappy with his mother for springing on him the way she had. His feelings made quite clear by the expression on his face when he turned to look at her as if he was the disapproving parent, and she some wayward child. For almost seven centuries Sif had not given him a single clue about the identity of his father, none at all. If he brought the man up, she changed the subject, and now, within the period of an hour, he met a man who knew her, loved her clearly, while she was pregnant with him, was introduced to the man she was currently with, and told that his father was the disgraced Prince, a Jötun who had been taken from his home.Â
âIâm not good at talking about things, Ullr.â Sif explained, feeling guilty and anxious. âI didnât even know how to broach the subject; though I admit that finding Helblindi hereâŠ. I thought he would still be at court, threw me off. I did intend to try and ease into things.â Except she hadnât. Sheâd been as blunt as she ever was.Â
Ullr sighed heavily. âI knowâŠ.â He looked back at Helblindi. âIt actually explains some things, but itâs a lot to take in.â
âI understand.â Helblindi said, and began collecting his shinies to put back on his shelf, feeling more and more awkward by the minute. It likely would have been better for everyone if Ullr had been eased into the meeting, but what was done was done--and of course, his nosy twin had to compound the entire situation by stepping into the room just then.
âOh, hello.â Byleistr blinked at Ullr, then squinted and stepped a bit closer. âOh, is this my nephew? I donât know why, but I thought youâd be younger. Probably wishful thinking on--â
âThis gaping craw is my twin brother, Byleistr.â Helblindi said dryly, inwardly mortified that Leis had decided to show up like this. He facepalmed. This was not going well at all. All heâd need at this point would be his mother bursting in on them. By Ymirâs frosted backside, this was his room, not a communal area!
Falling into Place
Helblindi smirked slightly and crookedly, an expression more like his twin would make. âUncle indeed.â He murmured. âI can almost see the lines he would wear.â It was, all considering, somewhat unnerving to meet in this way, though Helblindi took solace in the fact that his height seemed to have thrown Ullr, putting them on more even footing. He could also see that the utterance of âuncleâ had confused him, but he could see the resemblance clearly in a way he had denied when heâd gotten his good look at Loki the day he had walked boldly into the throne room and offered Laufey an offer he couldnât refuse.
It wasnât just the eyes that gave him away to Helblindi the way it had to Haldor, however. It was the shape of his jaw not unlike what he saw when he looked in the mirror. It was in the way he stood, and yes, it was his motherâs eyes staring at him. He wondered why his youngest brother had been the only one to inherit the snake eyes, but that was hardly an issue that could be answered by anyone anyway. âIt is my pleasure to meet you.â He continued and inclined his head to Ullr.
Ullr was so not amused by any of this. Heâd spent nearly seven hundred without the slightest clue who his father might be, no indication that his mother had any interest in telling him anything about the man, and now, suddenly, in the period of less than an hour, he had not only met a man who had, apparently, nearly killed him before he was even born, someone was still so hung up on Sif that it was painful to watch, but also found himself face to face with a giant who was supposed to be his uncle.Â
Just what, exactly, was he supposed to say to all of this? âUncle⊠right.â Sarcasm was easy when he didnât know what else to feel, and to his satisfaction, he saw Sif tense as she always did when he took that tone. âJust which of your brothers managed to knock my mother up, I wonder?âÂ
âLoki,â Sif answered quickly. âYour father is Prince Loki.âÂ
âYes.â Helblindi said and sighed before he sat down again, figuring his height might be an issue, but not willing to reveal he could do anything about it yet. âLoki is my youngest brother, which was a big enough shock for me and my family. We had thought him killed at the end of the war with Asgard, but....evidently not.â He pursed his lips, eyeing his nephew. âI imagine this is a shock, to find out this way that you carry Jötun blood.â

That would be like trying to placate a child, and Helblindi was well aware he was facing a man. He returned his gaze to Ullr, but found himself at a loss as to what to say next.
Falling into Place
Helblindi had decided to take down his shinies to keep himself from pestering Sif and jumped right to his feet when she showed up the way she did, having not expected this entranceâof course, she likely hadnât expected him to be there either, he supposed. He quickly tried to gather his composure when he saw she wasnât alone.
âSif.â He intoned and eyed the Vanir-looking young man before looking back at his mate. Barely biting back a curse at how she had startled him, though he let her feel that he was startled and not angry, in spite of how his tone might have sounded. He looked at Ullr again. âWho is this with you?â
She should have expected to find Blin in his rooms, but she had been too distracted to consider that he might have retreated when her emotions got to be a lot to handle. In the end, she had ended up startled herself when he had leaped to his feet in surprise. âI should have told you we were coming.â She said apologetically, and glanced over at her son who was a bit wide-eyed himself.Â
Ullr had, of course, knows that Frost Giants were big, but having never been near a true giant of any sort, he had not appreciated the true scale. He felt tiny looking up at the Jötun. He pulled himself together quickly. âIâm Ullr, and you must be the man who has usurped my mother.â The little twitch of his lips gave away the good humor behind his words, but that turned to confusion when Sif spoke again.Â
âUllr, I would introduce you to King Helblindi, my mate, and your uncle.âÂ
Helblindi smirked slightly and crookedly, an expression more like his twin would make. âUncle indeed.â He murmured. âI can almost see the lines he would wear.â It was, all considering, somewhat unnerving to meet in this way, though Helblindi took solace in the fact that his height seemed to have thrown Ullr, putting them on more even footing.
