“   oh,    but if not you,    then who will be there to look on the bright side of things?   ”     such a late hour has his words coming out lazy and sardonic,  but entirely sarcastic.     wind ripped through the sky at this time of night,   and especially with them so high up.    alastair’s fingers gripped against the railing,   like he could throw himself over the edge trying to get a closer look at the thames from here,    tower bridge standing like twin sentries in the view,    a monument the size of his thumb.     it was a rarity for him,   to feel this weightless.    but perhaps it was the presence behind him.    thomas,  taking the brunt of the wind,  hands ready in case alastair did lean too far over the edge.   every few minutes,   he would steal a glance his way to read of any hint of bother on his face,   but it never did.    thomas just stood there,   as close as they could be without touching, only half a smile.   they haven’t kissed since,   but that was their own doing.    at least,   alastair thinks it’s mutual.   showing a little restraint,  or else it might just be the two of them flung off the railing tangled in each other's coat pockets.    he steps back,  but nears the edge all the same.  his back against thomas’s chest,   close enough to feel his breaths rise and fall.    it just took a little push, really. pulling back onto his heel, and the gap between them closed.   “   i’m only joking.   ”     his words quieter now,  eyes fixed ahead.   “   you don’t have to hold it together.   not for them.   ”   the dip in his tone implicates his friends inside. he can imagine them, revelling in their party,   drinking themselves stupid.  have they even noticed thomas wasn’t there?    would they come looking for him?     alastair would.   acutely aware of where thomas happens to be.   whether in a crowd,   on a roof,   or out of sight.  it was starting to get him into trouble.    “  and certainly not for me.  ”    he glances up again,   so intent on reading the look on his face,  instead of just asking.      but the questions linger there,  the silence growing as they play through his head.  who are you,  when you’re not faking smiles?    did you know i could tell the difference?    –   can you touch the clouds from here?    –     and instead what he says is :     “   you continue to surprise me,   thomas.   ”
