“GOOD.  good.  if  anything  happened  to  you  tonight,  i––”  monty  stopped  himself  abruptly,  eyes  trained  on  the  hand  she  snatched  back,  then  meeting  her  own  gaze,  looking  into  her  eyes  that  he  hadn’t  really  noticed  were  gold-flecked  until  earlier  that  evening  when  he’d  first  seen  her  in  the  form-fitting  dress.   his  gaze,  at  that  moment  as  well,  had  lingered  on  helena  with  all  the  languid  grace  of  slow-poured  honey,  until  he’d  come  to  his  senses  a  few  beats  too  late  and  remembered  that  it  was  inappropriate  to  look  at  one’s  work  associate  like  that  and  had  covered  with  a  breezy  quip  about  not  knowing  she  owned  clothes  outside  of  their  usual  office-wear.  easy,  breezy,  banter. now,  too,  even  though  it  felt  as  though  time  itself  stopped  to  allow  them  the  moment  together,  he  clears  his  throat  and  shifts  from  one  foot  to  the  other,  reaching  blindly  for  the  conclusion  to  the  sentence  he’d  started.  “…i’d  probably  have  to  train  your  replacement  at  work  and  we  both  know  i  don’t  have  the  patience  for  that.  so.  don’t  let  it  come  to  that.”

monty  stopped  and  in  the  second  between  i  and  probably,  lena  saw  so  much  potential.  a  first  kiss  and  a  second  and  a  millionth,  a  little  bundle  nestled  in  the  crook  of  her  arm  as  he  looked  down  at  them  with  pride,  christmases  in  a  home  overwhelmed  by  love,  game  nights  with  friends  and  family,  the  first  hogwarts  letter,  the  proud  announcement  of  where  the  child  had  been  sorted.  she  saw  everything  she  wanted.  for  a  moment  it  was  like  a  wave  of  emotion,  crashing  against  the  shores  of  her  mind  (  perhaps  she’d  admit,  though  not  out  loud  and  certainly  not  to  monty,  to  feeling  a  prick  of  tears  against  the  back  of  her  eyes  that  she  blinked  away  as  soon  as  they  came  )  and  receding  again  back  into  the  ocean  of  her  thoughts.  in  that  second  between  i  and  probably,  she  lived  a  life  that  wouldn’t  be.  but  when  he  looked  at  her  like  that,  she  believed  that  it  might  be  possible.

lena  laughed,  not  quite  as  forced  as  she  thought  it  would  be,  and  she  gently  shook  her  head.  ❛  we’re  going  out  in  a  blaze  of  glory  together,  according  to  our  track  record,  ❜  she  teased,  testing  the  waters  of  her  own  being.  why  was  now  the  time  that  her  feelings  tried  to  be  insufferably  suffocating  with  all  the  good  things  she  couldn’t  have  ?  why  was  now  the  moment  when  he  was  with  odessa  ?  when  he  waxed  poetic  about  euphemia  ?  hadn’t  she  had  enough  on  her  mind  already  ?  ❛  and  i  don’t  think  lazarus  avery  would  turn  us  into  deaf,  mute  cats.  at  least  not  at  a  dinner  party.  ❜

euphemia + helena.

          ❛   it’s  a  beautiful  sunset .   ❜     euphemia  relents ,  but  only  after  a  prolonged  moment  of  holding  her  jaw  in  a  painfully  clenched  position .  with  her  decision  to  loose  it ,  the  words  had  tumbled  out  unstayed .  perhaps  an  appreciation  for  the  beauty  of  the  scottish  highlands  was  not  the  admission  helena  had  been  fishing  for ,  but  one  nonetheless ,  an  acknowledgement  of  her  fellow  society  member’s  words .  another  second  of  pregnant  silence ,  and  euphemia  exhales  quietly .     ❛   i  honestly  —  can’t  help  but  agree .   ❜     the  horrors  that  had  occured  on  the  grounds  at  her  demand  eclipsed  her  fond  memories  of  her  years  at  school  —  totally  and  unequivocally .  though  resolute  in  her  decisions  and  the  ways  they  contributed  to  the  goals  of  the  society ,  euphemia  suffered  from  an  innate  guilt .  she  was  not  built  or  bred  for  killing ,  even  when  she  wasn’t  the  one  who  struck  the  proverbial  blow .  it  drained  her  little  by  little  each  day ,  but  she  made  sure  her  shell  remained  standing  strong .  she  may  have  been  hollowing  herself  out  for  the  sake  of  the  equality  of  her  people ,  but  to  those  around  her  —  euphemia  insisted  that  she  would  appear  whole . 

a  shame,  that  euphemia  wouldn’t  crack.  not  because  helena  necessarily  wanted  her  to,  but  because  deep  down  she  was  convinced  that  euphemia  needed  it.  though  it  was  just  as  likely  that  lena  was  projecting  her  feelings  as  she  tended  to  do  when  things  felt  like  too  much.  those  damned  feelings  would  claw  at  her  throat,  as  though  they  were  trying  to  escape,  as  though  naming  her  feelings  would  release  them  from  the  confines  of  her  ever  so  carefully  guarded  heart  (  a  joke,  really,  to  think  that  it  was  carefully  guarded  —  anyone  could  come  and  go  as  they  pleased  if  they  wanted  to,  like  there  was  a  welcome  mat  next  to  one  that  said  come  again  !  ).  she  opened  her  mouth  to  speak,  to  say  something  that  might  soothe  out  the  conversation  but  anger  knocks  on  her  door,  guilt  on  its  arm,  and  she  can’t  stop  herself  from  saying,  ❛  i  think  you  should  tell  monty  about  that  night.  ❜  a  long,  horrific  beat  passed.  ❛  he’ll  only  believe  it  from  you,  maybe  he’ll  find  peace  in  it  too.  ❜

arabella + helena.

Were any other voice to call her name, the Crabbe would turn and without hesitation offer up a wonderful smile and cordial greeting to make them feel at ease. The sound of the voice that greeted her was one she had to endure seven years of and always  play nicely with a fellow gryffindor. Well as nice as a quite hostility could be. It took a moment but Arabella turned in all her elegant and graceful manner and smiled to Ms. Hyslop. “As do you Helena. We do our house proud by wearing its colors though this affair is quite interesting. Who’ve you come with?” Arabella asked with no desire to ask how she was or what other small talk someone plugged into a conversation that expressed genuine care over the other. “Have you seen, Monty?”

❛  he’s  the  one  whose  company  i’ve  been  delighted  to  share  this  evening,  actually,  ❜  lena  offered  up  with  a  sincere  smile.  the  smile  wasn’t  aimed  for  arabella,  but  instead  a  result  of  the  fondness  she  held  for  monty  (  even  as  paranoia  creeped  in  every  other  sentence,  even  when  he  told  her  that  chamomile  was  an  insult  to  tea  the  world  over  and  established  it  as  their  safe  word  ).  yes,  her  work  partner  had  found  his  way  into  quite  the  flight  of  fancy  that  swirled  about  her  mind,  as  he  routinely  seemed  to  do  every  few  months,  a  constant  reminder  that  she  had  not  forgotten  the  way  his  eyes  light  up  when  he  smiles  or  the  desire  to  run  his  fingers  through  his  hair  when  he  was  unsure  of  himself.  reining  her  own  desires,  thoughts,  and  feelings  back  in,  the  look  on  her  face  found  a  more  placid  smile  —  one  that  arabella  deserved.  did  helena’s  shoulders  sag  as  much  as  others  at  the  thought  of  being  within  the  confines  of  the  norris  manor’s  many  rooms  ?  she  was  glad  that  a  portrait  hadn’t  called  out  to  her  and  that  she  hadn’t  been  tripped  by  the  family  cat  (  that  surely  recognized  her  from  the  last  time  she  was  in  the  home  ).  ❛  the  event  is  certainly  something  to  bear  witness  to.  i’ve  never  seen  so  many  people  bogged  down  with  guilt  over  the  same  event.  as  far  as  monty,  he  just  stepped  out  to  …  powder  his  nose  ?  ❜

fleamont  practically  launched  himself  up  the  steps  toward  the  grand  front  door,  then  faltered,  stepping  back  down  until  his  shoes  hit  gravel  once  more.  he took  the  first  step again,  then  stopped  and  turned,  swiveling  around  to  look  helena  square  in  the  eye.  adjusting  his  tuxedo  jacket,  patting  his  pocket  for  the  carefully  folded  invisibility  cloak  he  couldn’t  feel  but  knew  was  there,  all  the  same,  it  only  took  a  mere  moment  before  he  spoke,  barreling  over  whatever  threads  of  their  previous  conversation  still  hung  in  the  air  between  them  ––  “if  i  say  the  word  CHAMOMILE  to  you,  it’ll  be  our  signal  that  the  night’s  gone  belly  up,  and  a  cue  to  leave.  we  arrived  together,  we  leave  together,  got  it?”  monty  adjusted  the  foeglasses  he  refused  to  take  off  even  as  the  sun  had  said  its  final  farewell  of  the  evening,  fingers  hovering  near  his  smoothed  back  curls,  before  remembering  he  wasn’t  supposed  to  mess  with  his  hair.  his  hand  falls  back  down  to  his  side,  useless.  “chamomile.  memorize  it.  i  would  never  normally  say  that  word  in  polite  conversation,  it’s  an  insult  to  tea  everywhere.  chamomile.  okay?  like  the  color  of  your  dress. TELL  ME  you’ll  remember  it––”

lena  stood  back  a  few  feet,  arms  in  front  of  her  as  she  held  her  clutch  that  matched  so  well  with  the  bright  yellow  dress  she’d  decided  to  wear  for  this  evening’s  dinner.  her  eldest  sister  had  always  talked  about  how  lovely  yellow  was  for  lena,  that  it  brought  out  gold  flecks  in  her  eyes  and  that  it  would  have  been  a  perfect  choice  for  lena  to  be  a  hufflepuff  just  for  the  look  of  it  all.  lena,  always  the  first  to  defend  her  house,  had  always  reminded  her  sister  that  the  hat  had  barely  touched  her  head  when  it  had  called  out  for  her  house  to  be  gryffindor  —  she  was  too  stubborn,  too  full  of  pride,  and  somewhere  deep  down  there  was  a  buried  courage  that  was  bubbling  up  closer  and  closer  to  the  surface  these  days.  monty,  since  they’d  been  partnered  up  at  the  obliviator’s  office,  had  always  had  a  habit  of  making  her  feel  more  at  ease  with  herself,  which  was  part  of  the  reason  that  she  couldn’t  quite  suppress  the  smile  from  her  face  as  she  watched  monty  approach  and  reproach  the  front  door.  

dutifully,  she  began  nodding  her  head  as  he  launched  back  into  the  chamomile  codeword  and  in  her  nodding  she’d  almost  missed  like  the  color  of  your  dress.  they’d  circle  back  to  that  one  later.  perhaps  her  sister  had  been  wrong  when  she’d  called  it  flattering.  still,  she  was  pleased  that  he  didn’t  touch  his  hair  (  she  liked  the  way  it  sat,  liked  a  lot  of  things  about  it  actually  —  about  him,  and  there  was  a  small  part  of  her  that  wanted  to  reach  forward  and  stroke  her  fingers  through  his  hair  herself  ).  she  swallowed,  took  a  breath,  and  nodded.  ❛  arrive  together,  leave  together,  chamomile  is  an  insult  to  tea  everywhere.  ❜  

it  wasn’t  until  her  hand  was  halfway  between  them  that  she  realized  she  was  about  to  touch  his  cheek  to  try  and  bring  him  some  peace.  a  bold  assumption  on  her  end  that  anyone  could  do  that  and  though  a  little  voice  in  the  back  of  her  head  told  her  that  she  could  do  that,  she  quickly  brought  her  hand  back  to  herself  and  ran  her  finger  along  the  top  of  her  ear,  avoiding  messing  with  her  own  hair.  it  was  strange  being  back  at  norris  manor,  a  place  that  she  was  sure  she  never  wanted  to  be  again  and  as  she  pushed  those  feelings  down,  lena  looked  up  at  him  and  said,  ❛  i  promise,  monty,  i’ll  remember.  i’ll  try  to  be  conscious  of  staying  within  ear  shot  all  night.  ❜

❛  i’d  avoid  the  sunroom  if  you  haven’t  been  there  yet.  ❜  helena  advised  softly,  trying  to  be  sure  that  only  druella  would  hear  her  as  she  said  it.  the  lounge  had  a  few  stragglers  in  it  as  everyone  tried  to  decide  what  they  would  do  now  that  dinner  had  ended  and  she  felt  the  same  kind  of  anxiety  bubble  up  in  her  throat  as  it  had  the  first  time  she  was  here.  she  hadn’t  shared  it  with  the  other  members  of  the  burial  society  but  perhaps  it  was  because  they  were  losing  her  trust.  the  more  she  butt  heads  with  other  members,  the  less  she  understood  why  euphemia  thought  it  would  ever  be  a  good  idea  for  her  to  join  at  all,  or  why  helena  had  accepted  the  invitation.  had  she  been  that  desperate  to  be  liked  ?  to  have  friends  ?  ❛  the  windows  all  look  like  the  hogwart’s  grounds  at  sunset,  right  before  the  darkness  settles  over.  ❜

❛  this  must  be  a  lovely  reminder  for  you,  too,  ❜  helena  harrumphed  softly,  careful  to  keep  her  voice  down  given  that  neither  could  ward  the  room  properly  with  all  the  guests  millin  about  the  house.  they  were  as  alone  as  any  two  people  could  be  but  that  made  nothing  inherently  private.  taking  another  sip  from  her  glass,  lena  was  thoughtful  for  a  moment  (  something  that  many  seemed  surprised  she  had  the  capability  to  be  ).  ❛  i  swear,  if  i  never  see  the  grounds  again  for  the  rest  of  my  life,  it’d  be  a  blessing  from  merlin  himself.  ❜  one  day  she’d  have  children  who  would  attend  the  school  that  would  undoubtedly  want  to  play  quidditch  —  too  many  of  her  siblings  had  been  talented  for  the  sport  to  think  it  might  not  be  a  genetic  mutation  —  and  their  graduations  were  also  something  she’d  want  to  attend,  but  perhaps  by  then  she’d  be  able  to  astral  project  so  she  wouldn’t  have  to  be  there  in  person.

❛  you  look  splendid,  arabella.  ❜  it  was  part  of  helena’s  tactic  of  the  night  to  be  courteous  towards  everyone,  as  she’d  tried  to  make  monty  to  subscribe  to  as  well.  she  wasn’t  sure  that  it  took  but  in  one  of  the  few  moments  that  she  wasn’t  by  his  side,  she  had  unfortunately  been  left  in  the  company  of  arabella  crabbe.  hostile  would  have  been  a  fair  evaluation  regarding  their  relationship  but  even  as  they  stood  in  the  lounge,  lena  couldn’t  help  but  remind  herself  that  she  had  to  be  kind.  to  everyone.  including  elitists  who  thought  they  were  too  good  for  a  laugh,  a  joke,  and  an  innocent  prank.

❛  are  you  snooping  around  too  ?  ❜  lena  asked,  teasing  tone  evident  as  the  red  skirt  swished  around  its  wearer.  she’d  initially  arrived  in  a  yellow  dress,  one  that  was  more  form  fitting  than  what  she  wore,  but  an  apparent  outfit  change  was  needed  at  all  the  other  guests  who  had  arrived  in  the  same  color.  feeling  that  she  couldn’t  compare,  she  settled  on  gryffindor  red  —  a  reminder,  though  no  one  could  forget  the  house  that  raised  her.  her  neighbor,  though,  was  a  welcome  sight  at  the  party.  she  knew  that  he  was  also  a  ministry  employee  and  that  he  likely  had  his  own  reasons  for  being  there  (  wasn’t  everyone  just  welling  with  morbid  curiosity  about  the  evening  ?  ).  the  bedroom  they  were  standing  in  was  certainly  too  neat  but  lena  could  not  find  something  wrong  with  a  well  kept  space,  especially  if  guests  were  coming  over.  the  fact  it  did  not  look  lived  in  was  …  unsettling  but  it  was  best  to  stuff  down  whatever  issues  she  had,  as  much  as  she  could.  ❛  in  truth,  i  was  looking  for  a  moment  of  reprieve.  somewhere  that  wasn’t  about  either  of  our  mi—  absent  hosts.  ❜  unlike  most  people  in  the  house,  helena  hyslop  had  an  unfortunately  decent  idea  about  the  state  of  mister  cecil  ashby  norris,  esquire,  even  if  she  didn’t  know  his  approximate  location.

odessa + helena.

               it  was  becoming  more  and  more  frequent  to  catch  odessa  spending  time  in  public  rather  than  closed  up  in  her  apartment.  but  with  that  came  the  increased  ease  of  which  others  could  find  her.  she  had  a  cup  of  water  with  a  small  ring  of  pooled  condensation  sitting  on  the  table,  mere centimetres  away  from  the  book  her  eyes  were  pouring  over  when  a  familiar  voice  crooned  teasingly.  the  brain  fog  brought  on  by  the  fantasy  in  her  hands  was  shaken  with  a  breathy  laugh  at  the  joking  of  fleamont’s  appearance  as  she  straightened  up  in  her  seat.  

               helena.  she  frustrated  and  nearly  enamored  odessa  at  the  same  time.  her  vibrant  exaggerations  and  incessant  rambling  created  more  noise  than  odessa  would  have  preferred  but  the  girl’s  voice  was  enchanting.  surprising  herself,  shakes  her  head  and  smiles  at  the  other  girl.  “all  yours.”  she’s  folding  the  book  over  with  her  thin,  paper  bookmark  holding  the  last  page  she  read.  “i’m  completely  solo  today.”  she  reassures  helena  while  gesturing  to  the  empty  chair  in  front  of  her.  “what  story  have  you  got  for  me  now?” 

❛  solo,  hm  ?  glad  i  could  change  that.  ❜  lena  flashed  her  charming,  pearly  white  smile  as  she  sat  down.  taking  a  sip  of  her  butterbeer,  she  hummed  softly.  it  was  nice  to  be  with  odessa,  with  someone  who  expected  nothing  more  than  a  bundle  of  lies  neatly  packaged  and  wrapped  up  in  a  bow.  but  looking  at  odessa  made  her  forget  the  stories  that  floated  in  her  head  (  except  that  was  a  lie,  too,  one  story  sat  at  the  forefront  of  her  mind  quite  prominently  but  that  was  one  she’d  likely  take  to  her  grave  ).  she  folded  her  hands  and  unfolded  them  just  as  quickly,  a  little  nervous  as  she  reached  for  her  glass  and  took  another  sip  in  the  span  of  ten  seconds.  odessa  was  trustworthy  enough,  monty  clearly  trusted  her,  but  there  was  a  sense  of  apprehension  that  settled  on  her  chest.  she  didn’t  want  anyone  else  to  be  burdened  with  what  she  knew  and  she  didn’t  want  to  be  burdened  with  an  arrest  in  connection  with  the  missing  person.  so  she  kept  all  her  stories  bottled  up  in  her  chest.  what  a  strange,  horrific  feeling  for  a  creature  like  her.  ❛  it’s  been  a  long  …  few  days  at  this  point.  you  wouldn’t  mind  telling  me  with  a  story,  would  you  ?  ❜

rowan + helena.

Rowan Shafiq was weaving her way through all the people, trying to get a quote. With everything that was happening, she wasn’t the only writer vying to get more information. Nothing the press loved more than a mystery or three. Though in her mind, she was felt more concern - she was truly in the dark and had to be open to all answers, making her wonder if one of her compatriots had something to do with it.

Unlike the other reporters however, Rowan was bold enough to begin cold calling on people within the Ministry itself. Let them drag her out, she might get a quote or two first. She stopped and looked around, tapping someone on the shoulder. “Hello, did you happen to speak to Cecil Norris before he went missing?”

❛  hello,  lena.  so  nice  to  see  you,  lena.  helena,  would  you  have  time  for  a  few  questions  on  the  record  for  the  daily  prophet  ?  helena  that  dress  looks  absolutely  divine  on  you.  ❜  in  true  helena  hyslop  fashion,  she  likely  could  have  gone  on  for  another  ten  more  minutes  but  she’d  been  working  on  her  self  control  and  while  a  fifth  quip  threatened  to  slip  past,  she  bit  at  her  tongue.  her  brows  knit  in  pain  as  she  made  a  small  noise  of  dissatisfaction  at  herself.  perhaps  her  overzealous  approach  to  most  situations  was  next  on  her  list  of  things  to  rein  in.  

it  was  best  not  to  answer,  for  as  long  as  she  could  manage  to  do  that.  discussing  exactly  what  she  knew  about  cecil  norris  and  his  disappearance  was  not  something  that  lena  was  particularly  fond  of.  hell,  she  hadn’t  even  told  euphemia  of  her  involvement  and  she  wasn’t  sure  how  much  she  wanted  to  do  that,  either.  so  instead,  lena  opted  for  lies  of  omission.  no  one  could  prove  what  she  knew  and  no  one  needed  to  know  she  knew  anything  about  it  either.  so,  instead,  she  would  make  her  jokes  and  smile  wide  as  she  asked,  ❛  have  you  been  successful  in  stopping  ministry  employees  on  their  lunch  breaks  ?  or  am  i  the  first  to  fall  victim  to  the  press  ?  ❜

“ WHAT  IF. . . “  they’re  the  first  words  he’d  uttered  since  their  arrival  at  the  slightly  dingy  if  not  cheery  diner,  other  than  a  muttered  ‘yes,  please,  all  of  it’  directed  towards  the  poor  waitress  who’d  glanced  in  horror  at  the  way  he  waved   his  hand  in  a  general  gesture  over  the  menu’s  sticky  pages.  that  had  then  left  him  silent,  alternating  between  dipping  french  fries  into  his  chocolate  milkshake  and  gingerly  pushing  chicken  salad  sandwiches  and  three  different  cups  of  coffee  that  all  looked  the  same  to  him  across the  table  to  where  helena  was  seated. now,  he  looks  somewhat  distracted  by  the  log  cabin  he’d  started  constructing  out  of  the  dubious - looking  sausages  neither  of  them  were  eager  to  try.  food  was  no  longer  enough  of  a  distraction  from  the  heavy,  screaming,  twisting  reality  that  yanked  the  rug  of  stability  out  from  under  him  time  and  time  again.  the  lincoln  log  sausages  had  been  a  worthy  distraction  from  the  distraction,  but  his  treacherous  brain  went  behind  his  back  and  sweet - talked  his  mouth  into  blurting  out  the  desperate,  foolish  idea  that  he  so  ardently  wanted  to  be  possible. having  trailed  off,  he  glances  back  up  at  her  through  the  rosy  lenses  that filtered  the  world  around  him,  the  ones  that  had  always  marked  her  as  an  ally.  “ what  if  there. .   is  a…  perfectly  reasonable  explanation  for  everything  that  we  saw? ”

what  if  …  was  the  only  thing  that  sat  in  lena’s  mind.  other  words  swirled  around,  thoughts  and  snippets  too  hard  to  catch  and  it  reminds  her  why  she  never  could  have  played  seeker  in  quidditch,  grasping  her  fingers  on  the  thing  always  just  out  of  reach  was  not  a  particularly  honed  ability  of  hers.  staring  into  coffee  cups  was,  though,  and  the  deep  black  reflected  unseeing  eyes  back  at  her.  unseeing  eyes  and  unsure  breaths  and  the  only  understanding  that  she  had  no  idea  what  had  just  happened.  

one  minute  they  were  in  diagon  alley,  under  the  invisibility  cloak,  very  close  together,  her  heart  thrumming  in  her  chest,  and  the  next  they  were  standing  among  trees  that  were  so  gnarled  together  they  could  not  see  the  late  night’s  sky.  by  the  time  they’d  made  it  into  the  norris’  home,  lazarus  was  sitting  at  the  head  of  a  table,  charming  smile  adorned  on  his  face,  and  explaining  to  a  man  in  a  tweed  jacket  and  the  creepy  blond  assistant,  that  he  would  take  care  of  everything.  it  did  not  escape  her  in  that  moment  that  everything  probably  also  included  the  life  of  cecil  norris.  

lena’s  eyes  shifted  up  to  meet  monty’s,  brows  knit  together  in  confusion.  the  question  had  lingered  within  her  too,  that  there  might  have  been  more  than  they  understood,  that  there  was  something  beyond  what  they’d  saw.  she  wanted  to  believe  that  lazarus  avery  was  as  good  a  man  as  any  other,  but  she  saw  the  fire  that  burned  in  his  eyes  when  mr.  norris  had  spoken  down  to  him,  the  way  his  grip  adjusted  on  his  wand.  if  she  hadn’t  known  better,  she  would  have  thought  that  his  eyes  turned  green,  as  though  building  up  enough  energy  to  unleash  a  killing  curse  right  then  and  there.  the  only  reason  she’d  jinxed  the  man  herself  was  to  keep  lazarus  from  making  a  bigger  mistake.  perhaps  she  should  have  stayed.  

❛  i  want  to  believe  the  best  in  laz,  ”  lena  liked  him  well  enough,  sure,  but  not  enough  to  defend  what  she  knew.  her  eyes  lifted  up,  wanting  to  make  sure  that  the  waitress  or  the  other  patron  on  the  opposite  end  of  the  room  was  listening  in.  she  bent  in  a  little  closer,  voice  softened  as  she  said,  ❛  but  monty  …  i  don’t  think  there’s  an  explanation  that  could  make  me  be  alright  with  what’s  happened.  ❜  he  transfigured  the  man  into  a  cat.  it  wasn’t  safe  here,  to  say  that  out  loud,  she  could  think  of  very  few  places  where  it  would  be.  lena’s  mind  reeled  the  more  she  thought  about  the  implications  of  what  she  saw  and  who  committed  them.  this  could  ruin  him.  then,  confusion  still  laced  in  her  tone,  she  added,  ❛  do  we  …  tell  someone  about  this  ?  ❜

lyall + lena.

The door perhaps couldn’t have flung open quicker at the mention of treats. Lyall was a lot of things but a good cook was not one of them. His diet was essentially the equivalent of the rations during the war, more of habit than anything. Only the most simple staples - toast, pasta, rice and sometimes soup if he felt particularly spicy (from a can of course) graced his table and even then it was always on the move - there was too much to write and research for otherwise.

He supposed that what he got for hanging around entities whose main food option was rotten. His smile was beaming as he peered through the doorway, unable to help his sheepish grin. The smell hit him like nector for the gods. “You are..perhaps more than I deserve in a neighbour Lena.”

Lyall’s eyes and fingers were already eager, trying to decide what to try first but he managed to contain himself and clear his throat, soft amber gaze meeting Lena’s “What’s brought you baking again? I could smell it through the walls…”

the  war  was  impactful  but  perhaps  it  was  a  gift  that  lena’s  mother  had  a  particular  gift  for  food  based  charms.  there  were  so  many  in  the  household  at  the  time  of  the  war,  and  perhaps  it  was  a  gift  that  so  many  of  josephine’s  children  were  at  hogwarts  for  the  majority  of  the  war’s  days.  she’d  paid  attention,  too,  when  her  mother  was  cooking  and  it  was  one  of  the  few  things  that  had  bonded  them  together.  it  was  a  quiet  space  in  the  kitchen,  even  with  their  music  playing,  and  their  occasional  light  hearted  jokes  exchanged.  it  had  been  a  place  of  peace  when  helena  was  usually  a  torrent  of  noise.  baking  had  always  calmed  her  and  now,  as  she  sat  on  the  precipice  of  turning  in  a  friend  and  explaining  her  involvement  in  another  missing  man,  she’d  turned  to  this  calming  exercise  because  it  seemed  more  useful  than  knitting.  at  the  least  it  was  easier  to  share.  

until  he’d  asked  why,  lena  was  beaming.  she  started  to  laugh,  a  little  nervous,  ears  burning  in  embarrassment  as  she  tried  to  come  up  with  an  explanation.  she  wasn’t  used  to  lying  to  lyall,  he  had  always  made  her  too  comfortable  and  there  had  been  no  use  for  it.  he  had  always  made  her  comfortable  to  be  herself  and  in  this  moment  perhaps  that  was  a  dangerous  thing.  ❛  we  have  a  couple  of  birthdays  coming  up  in  our  department  and  i  was  hoping  to  make  some  treats  for  everyone.  but  i  made  extras  for  you.  i’m  sure  the  snacks  in  the  ghouls  department  isn’t  all  that  delicious.  ❜

it  was  often  that,  when  lena  found  herself  at  home  and  struggling  with  something  to  occupy  her  mind,  she  would  begin  to  bake.  and  bake.  and  bake.  and  bake  until  the  apartment  was  fragrant  enough  to  waft  over  three  doors  down  when  she  opened  her  front  door  and  she  no  longer  had  counter  space  in  her  kitchen  to  contain  all  that  she’d  made,  so  it  spilled  out  into  her  dining  room  and  it  had  gotten  so  bad  today  that  it  also  occupied  half  of  the  coffee  table  in  her  living  room.  any  kind  of  treat  you  could  desire  was  there  —  pastries,  cookies,  cakes,  if  it  had  sugar  in  it,  you  would  likely  find  it  in  her  apartment.  

making  her  way  next  door,  platter  in  one  hand,  she  knocked  on  his  door  lightly.  lyall  was  an  ideal  neighbor.  he  wasn’t  loud  or  obnoxious  (  that  was  lena’s  job  )  and  he  also  worked  at  the  ministry,  which  meant  she  had  a  fair  idea  of  what  his  schedule  might  be  like.  there  were  no  false  pretenses,  no  secrets  to  keep,  and  with  enough  time  gone  by  between  the  events  of  the  night  on  august  first  and  now  she  was  able  to  look  him  in  the  eye  and  pretend  she  was  fine  so  well,  she’d  even  managed  to  convince  herself  an  hour  at  a  time.  

❛  lyall  !  ❜  she  called  out  after  a  moment  of  waiting  for  him.  perhaps  bribery  would  make  him  come  to  the  door  faster,  her  famous  patience  as  short  as  a  can  be  already  gone,  though  she  still  sounded  delightful  as  ever  for  her  neighbor.  ❛  it’s  lena,  i  have  treats  !  ❜

many  people  dread  being  known  but  lena  was  quite  the  opposite  and  always  seemed  to  make  others  aware  of  that  in  the  way  she  carried  herself.  long  before  she  spoke,  it  wasn’t  hard  to  sense  the  unbridled  confidence.  perhaps  it  was  a  desperate  need  to  be  validated  and  acknowledged  that  made  her  like  this  but  really,  who  was  to  say  ?  certainly  not  lena.  and  perhaps  that  was  what  fueled  her  to  be  out  on  a  thursday  night,  knowing  she  would  have  to  go  to  work  the  next  morning  (  or  maybe  this  was  her  guilt  about  knowing  what  happened  to  cecil  norris  and  not  knowing  how  to  tell  someone  without  incriminating  herself  ).  

the  leaky  cauldron  was  predictably  half  full  and  in  searching  for  a  familiar  face,  she  smiled  softly  upon  seeing  odessa.  there  was  a  fondness  that  lena  had  for  other  storytellers,  even  if  their  mediums  were  different,  and  for  odessa  she  would  gladly  be  quiet.  making  her  way  over,  a  pair  of  butterbeers  in  hand,  lena  set  one  down  in  front  of  her  and  took  the  seat  across,  ❛  is  this  seat  taken  ?  ❜  teasingly  she  added,  ❛  is  fleamont  going  to  appear  out  of  nowhere  and  expect  me  to  move  ?  ❜

on  her  days  off,  when  she  could  not  find  anyone  to  spend  time  with,  helena  hyslop  found  herself  roaming  the  diagon  alley  and  carkitt  market,  spending  her  wages  as  she  saw  fit.  typically  she  was  well  restrained  but  this  was  not  one  of  those  days  and  she’d  spent,  more  than  she  should  be  proud  to  admit,  on  things  that  she  likely  did  not  need  but  adored  and  desired  all  the  same.  on  saturdays,  she  also  usually  found  herself  in  a  small  tea  shop  tucked  into  a  corner  of  carkitt  market  that  was  not  too  busy  around  this  time  and  it  was  more  often  than  not  that  she  found  a  familiar  face:  taliesin  lestrange.  

it  would  be  far  too  generous  to  say  they  were  friends,  though  helena  would  count  him  among  hers  for  the  sheer  amount  of  information  she  has  disclosed  to  him,  whether  or  not  he  remembered  it.  he  was  subject  to  her  presence,  like  many  who  knew  her,  because  she  had  asked  him  if  she  could  sit  down  and  he  was  too  painfully  polite  to  send  her  away.   bag  laden  arms  pulled  open  the  door  to  the  shop  and  she  smiled  brightly  as  she  saw  taliesin  sitting  there.  

❛  tal  !  ❜  she  called  out  jovial,  her  voice  adding  to  the  dull  hum  of  the  shop  as  she  stepped  in,  bags  rustling  about  her  as  she  made  her  way  over.  she  mumbled  all  sorts  of  apologies  as  she  accidentally  knocked  not  one  but  three  customers  in  the  head  or  side  with  her  bags.  ❛  pardon  me  —  sorry,  i’m —  sorry,    just  a  girl  who  did  a  lot  of  shopping  today  coming  through,  watch  your  heads.  ❜  

stopping  in  front  of  the  table  he  had  acquired,  lena  set  her  bags  down  with  a  bit  of  a  huff.  ❛  so  ?  how  are  you  today  ?  hit  as  many  people  in  the  head  with  a  bag  as  i  have  ?  ❜
