Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I like Emerald Fennell, and I believe Jacob's portrayal of Heathcliff is perfectly valid, just like any other interpretation of the character. I should also clarify that I'm a huge fan of the Gothic genre; I've been reading Wuthering Heights since I was 16.

Imagine... You are renovating your house. You start to smash up the tiles on the wall of your bathroom and you notice a secret door behind one of them. It's too small for any person to get through normally. You open it. It's a bit bigger inside and warm and damp. You notice a figure squeezed into the far corner. You shine your torch in... It's Jacob Smallordi. He's got quite a lot of rat about him and he's very very slimy. He turns to you and makes eye contact. He starts to hiss like a cat and moves to attack you with his long claws. You quickly close the door. You end up covering it with the new tile and you never see any sign of him again but sometimes at night you hear a scratching and a small hiss coming from that wall. You can never forget him.

Tumblr showed me a post from someone saying they "theorized" that the Creature's hair grows in different shades because his various sections of scalp are from different corpses, and now I can't find it... So for anyone who has not seen: that's VERY much canon!! Here's a cool post from the wig maker about the design process. :)

"This is the wig for the Creature (Jacob Elordi) in @frankensteingdt . @mikehill_creations designed the makeup and wig and I made these custom pieces. These photos illustrate some of my process and important elements of the hair. One of the first things was deciding on the color, GDT wanted to stay away from jet black, after a few color tests an ashier dark brown combination was decided upon. I blended the color you see here out of 3 different browns, one very dark ash brown (level 3), light ash blown (level 7)and some warmer brown (Level 5) to give it a hint of richness. There is also a patch of grey on the right hand side above the ear that peaks through at times. This gave the feeling that his scalp is pieced together from different people. Lastly GDT wanted a prominent widows peak in the design so this is what we came up with. I also included a photo of my pattern/block and crazy color coded notes. There were so many scars throughout the head I had to make sure there was no hair overlapping on them. It was quite a challenge achieving that. @maggieevans555 did a beautiful job applying and styling all the wigs on set."

One thing I appreciate about the film is how it subverts the trope of the tragedy of dying young as a woman.

Of course, it's a fairly common theme, contextual to Victorian Gothic, given the short life expectancy and questionable health. However, Catherine's tragedy is more connected to her femininity, being homesick, to the despair, identity crisis and indecisiveness, a product from a sexist society that drained women's vitality in order to domesticate them.

On the other hand, Fennell offers both a modern and contextual perspective on the film's setting, she was aware of how Margot Robbie would likely impact the view from the public (both box office and based on her previous roles) she takes the route of emphasizing how being a woman is simply torture no matter what; even in Catherine's tragic end, the public expected a virginal and young actress to make the suffering believable and supposedly faithful to the novel.

Why is a woman's death only valued through the lens of losing her youth and being unable to bear children or enjoy motherhood? We don't see Catherine die beautifully like Ophelia (or, like other adaptations have tried to beautify the scene of Catherine fainting in her hero's arms) in fact, it's a raw death, but without reaching the grotesque levels of her body bleeding out.

She dies without saying goodbye, without uttering poetic words, something ephemeral and cruel, like the pig whose only purpose is to be fattened and then eaten.

The film makes an effort to offer Catherine the wild freedom of her childhood even though she was expected to settle down, but at the same time it comments on the danger of perpetuating the infantilization of women through Isabella, but that is another topic that I may talk about in other post.
