Gab Bouchard was a big discovery this year for me with his album Triste Pareil released in February. It seems to be his debut album, with only an EP released in 2017 called Cerveau-Lent.
Bouchard grabs you from the very start of the album and puts you in a melancholic mood, where lost loves are brought back to the surface and given a voice. Basically perfect for the cold winter nights to come.
Consume with moderation.
Athena is the first album of Sudan Archives, a violonist based in Los Angeles, California. She mixes Sudanese music with modern R&B and a flawless use of her violin to craft wonderful songs, deep and immensely fascinating.
Athena is not her first work. She released two EPs previous to this album : Sudan Archives and Sink, both released under thee label Stones Throw.
I think that everybody with an open mind and interest to African-inspired music should give Sudan Archives a try.

It was in church that Sudan began learning to play the violin by ear, participating in ensemble performances. "I remember begging my mom to get me a violin," she says. "From there I just never let it go – it felt like I had a purpose."
This album is the second project from Jerusalem In My Heard. Radwan Ghazi Moumneh is the original founding member of the band and he changes his collaborators for nearly every album (this time he was collaborating with Charles-André Coderre).
JIMH uses experimental music to blend old and new Arab music currents in If He Dies, If If If If If, with uses of samples, synths and vocals. It’s a very complex album, and, since I’m not speaking this language, I’m clearly missing some interesting lyrics.
There is two other albums available on bandcamp : Mo7it Al-Mo7it and Daqa'iq Tudaiq.
It seems also that JIMH is mostly a live performance. With up to 35 artists on stage, I guess it can be very impressive and mesmerizing to watch.
Pascale Project is an electronic artist based in Montréal, Canada. She set her anchor strongly in the house and experimental portions of the electronic genre.
The Be Urself (EP or small album) was published on Orange Milk Records, which I’ve never heard of before. She also did, as far I can tell, only one other album Just Feel Good For A Moment that she is selling on her own Bandcamp page.
She stated on Facebook that she started her own label Your Approval Isn't Needed quite recently. There is only one album there, but I guess it will grow one day!
I discovered YATCH when a friend of mine sent me a link to their most recent album, Chain Tripping. That album is an oddball in the sense that it was created by an artificial intelligence in part wrote by the artists themselves. And it’s not bad at all. The songs (Downtown) Dancing, Blue on Blue and SCATTERHEAD are the clear highlights. The lyrics don’t make any sense, but it does the job of being catchy.
Digging a bit more in their previous works, I found a gem of an album : I Thought The Future Would Be Cooler. And it starts with a bang! The song Miles & Miles is 8 minutes long and is a pleasure to listen to. It gives the tone to the whole thing.
YATCH is based in Los Angeles, California, and are doing electronic music heavily inspired by indie-rock.
All their albums are presently available for pennies on Bandcamp. With the coronavirus hitting the music industry so hard, they decided to modify all their covers to put them in yellow with the stripped border. If you can afford to throw them some money, now is the time.
In this time of isolation and solitude, attacked on all sides by a deadly virus, haircuts for men decided to release this two songs EP simply called so lonely. The guy is pretty well known in the electronic/vaporwave scene. He released a tremendous amount of albums, EPs and LPs, more than 40 if my MusicBee library is not lying. Some of his notable works are keygen 成果物 [CD-R], エピソード1, 地下カラオケ ep, 手遅れに実現 lp and パステル勾配 lp.
For someone so well known, there is very little information accessible, other than the *possible* fact that the artist is based in Honolulu, Hawaii (that’s what his Bandcamp and Soundcloud accounts are saying). He also wrote :
i take no credit. everything is plundered.
Some of his works are not accessible anymore on Bandcamp, you’ll have to dig more to find all his albums. I was lucky enough to gather most of them, but it’s not the case for everybody.
Run Boy Run was the debut EP of the band of the same name, Run Boy Run. It instantly caught my ears. The great instruments, the harmonies and the old-timey stories are all put in a great blend by this Tucson (Arizona)-based folk band.
After this EP they went on and released 2 albums and an other EP over 3 years : So Sang the Wippoorwill, Something to Someone and I Would Fly. I have yet to listen to the last two, but So Sang The Wippoorwill is an other masterpiece from them.
Jesse Allen left the band in 2016 to pursue a solo project that produced the album Spirits Kill Past. An other band member, Rebekah Rolland, also did a solo album called Seed & Silo that is worth the listen.
Sufjan Stevens is widely known for his folk albums Illinoise and Michigan, the electronic journey of The Age of Adz or even concept albums like The BQE, which is some sort of ode to a highway, as weird as it sounds.
If you never listened to Sufjan Stevens, please treat yourself and do it. You will find a wonderful world of sounds and stories.
In October, he donated to our humble souls the wonderful album that I linked below : The Decalogue. He wrote this for a choreography created by Justin Peck. It was played (and recorded) by Timo Andres, a piano artist, and then released into the world.
Little side note : He will released an other album soon, in late March. It’s exciting, since it will be an experimental electronic album. I’m very interested to see how it will turn out.
Released through the label 100% Silk, a sub-label of Not Not Fun Records, the album Resonant Body by Octo Octa is a house album deeply related to the physical transitions the artist went through while also being influenced by the nature, as stated on the Bandcamp page :
Maya recorded the songs at her cabin in New Hampshire in order to channel the resonance of the forest, the beauty of the river, and the energy from the rituals she conducts within it.
And this is clearly visible on the song My Body is Powerful. Octo Octa also reeleased two other albums : Between Two Selves and Rough, Rugged, and Raw, in addition to at least 4 EPs.
She does music that is hard to not cling to. It grabs you and all of a sudden you’re in for a 40 minutes ride without even noticing!
What makes electronic music (espacially vaporwave) so good sometimes is the way it is telling a story without saying a word. FM Skyline is the king when doing just that, especially with his album EarthSim. You just feel like you are walking on clouds, flying and going places around unexpected landscape.
Funnily enough, I bough this album two times without even noticing! The first time I bough it in a bundle of the Business Casual label (where, I believe, the album was originally released), and the second time I bought the re-release of the album by itself. I have absolutely no regret, even if it was not intentional!
FM SKyline also released on Bandcamp the albums Deluxe Memory Suite™, vapor.midi.muzak and Advanced Memory Suite, all of them is worth the listen. He is now under the label 100% Electronica.
This is clearly waaaaay out of what I normally listen to, but it gave me such a punch in the face that I needed to talk about it. This piece of music was created by Matana Roberts, an “ American sound experimentalist, visual artist, jazz saxophonist and clarinetist, composer and improviser based in New York City”. Coin Coin Chapter Four : Memphis is the fourth album of the series COIN COIN (that I still have to listen to) and it was released on the Constellations Records.
It is hard to fully grasp this album at the first listen. I would say that it is still hard to grasp this album after the tenth time you listen to it. It is just so haunting, so unexpected, so different, so intricate, so complex... The album is telling us stories that are talking to your soul, but are out of reach at the same time.
This album is one of a kind and you should totally give it a try, even if you end up not understanding what you listened to.
The only time I saw Jacques Greene in a show, he was opening for The XX a few years ago in Montreal. I wasn’t even aware of his existence at that point, but he did get me pumped for the main show even if everyone was not in the same mood as me. He was able to create that transcendental, floaty atmosphere, guiding us with an iron fist in his melancholic universe. I think you get the vibe : I was sold. It was so fun.
His music is a dancy electronic and house blend. He started creating music in 2010 but we had to wait up to 2017 to have a full album with Feel Infinite, that I warmly recommend. In between he did released a ton of EPs and singles, two of them I bought (Phantom Vibrate EP and After Life After Party EP). Finally, last year (2019) he released Dawn Chorus, which is the link I put above.
Go listen to it, it’s good for your health.
Let’s hope Jacques Greene will release more fantastic music in the future.
Sérion is a French-Canadian indie folk band like no other. I’ve heard about these guys a few years ago when a friend of mine gave me an electronic copy of their album Greatest Hits (it’s an absolutely hilarious name since it was their ONLY album at the time). I don’t know if it will ever be available on Bandcamp sadly. It did set the tone nicely for the next two EPs that got released afterwards : Niaiser and Vlimeux. Niaiser EP was a big hit the few times I put it during parties and family reunions and Vlimeux EP was a nice follow up to it.
These guys use guitars and funny lyrics to make everyone smile, laugh and find them stupid (in that order). (The lyrics are in french, beware.)

He has only two EPs on Bandcamp, Hope For Something that I linked above and Always. That last one is legit one of the first album I bought on Bandcamp, and I clearly remember that at that moment I couldn’t get enough of it. And I was always sad that it only lasted three songs.
Panama has been really active last year in term of collaborations. In 2019 he did at least eleven songs with other artists, all of which are sadly not on Bandcamp. (For those who have Spotify, there’s a lot of stuff available there. Go nuts.)
I really like what this artist did so far and I’m looking forward to anything new coming from him.
Signals. (not to be confused with the band Signals based in Phoenix, Arizona) is a UK-based indie rock band that has been around since at least 2012. Three years ago I bought two of their EPs, Square Wheels and Facial Furniture, and never really checked on them again to see what they were doing. Seemed like I missed yet an other EP and some singles. They explained in their Facebook page :
We are yet to write that album that you guys desperately wanted, and don’t want to bullshit you with any hooha about getting back down to business etc, because, in all honesty, it may never quite materialise
It would be truly wonderful to receive a new album from these guys. In the meantime, you can definitely have a listen of their interestingly named EPs and check the official video of their song Self Medicate.
This album was released on a label based in Germany called L33K5P1N 84574RD5. It is written on Bandcamp that this is トッシュインプラスマック ‘s third album, but I was only able to find two of them (the other one being とても美しい , released in 2017). It also seems that there is no fourth album in sight, so if anything new is done by them it will most probably be a surprise.
官能的な絶対 is an amazing album with a dreamy atmosphere. You feel like you are in a speakeasy with dimmed lights, a martini in one hand and a clear promise of an interesting night to come.
By doing some research on M.O.O.N. I discovered that this artist haven’t use this name since 2017, when he released his first and only full length album Clinically Blasé. (I’m soooo late!) He is now known as Was Fret and is presently based in New York. At least he is still an electronic music artist, which is wonderful :D
I discovered M.O.O.N. when I bough a bundle of electronic music a while back and his textures and beats just mesmerized me, especially in MOON EP, the music I linked here. It was one of my first introduction to electronic music.
He did a couple of other EPs and the album I mentioned earlier.
