If she’d stopped to think about it, Chloe would realize how acerbic it sounded, how callous she seemed to bite so sharply at something Kate must have truly believed in — something Chloe admired, whether or not she admitted it to herself. Her own blind faith had run dry ages ago. Sometimes, she wondered what it would be like to trust someone again.

A painful mask of grief twisted her face into something resembling a gargoyle, the extremes of human emotion parodied for the world to better see their anguish. She ducked her head to hide it, her hands coming up to hold onto her beanie as she squeezed her eyes shut, briefly.

“I loved Rachel,” she said through gritted teeth. “If God loved me so much he wouldn’t have taken her away from me like this — I was — God! I was happy!”

A heavily smoked cigarette hangs between two fingers; Chloe kicks another rock across the pockmarked dirt of the junkyard. Her head has been pounding all day and going home is the last thing on her mind. She missed dinner. There’ll be hell to catch, but she’s running the other way.

A frown twists her mouth and her forehead creases with frustration and helplessness. “God,” she says, exhaling sharply, and brings the cigarette to her lips for another drag — just in time for the hot ashes to burn down to her fingers, stinging with heat.

“Shit!”

She drops the stub into the dirt, kicks that as well.

“I am so sick of people projecting their bullshit onto me!      I’ve got enough of my own.”
