High on the jungle road

The forest road leading up to the monastery was dark, the jungle close on both sides teeming with life. She could hear some small animal moving through the undergrowth to her right and a strange whistling bird call echoed through the forest with a mimic reply coming not far off behind her. Only stars above cast a faint light as Ialyara trudged uphill on the packed dirt road. The air was cool high in the mountains and the night would have been lovely had she not been lost in thought. It had been a long day and would be a longer night still. The stone walls of the Shelynite monastery rose up above her on the hillside. Grey stone blocks likely quarried nearby and meticulously fit together without mortar or magic in unparalleled craftsmanship. Shelyn had smiled on whoever built that wall. A small watchtower rose on one side of the heavy wooden gate which was closed for the night. On the planks, carefully glued to the gate to greet any visitor, was a portrait of her friend, wanted, dead or alive for 29 000 Araban gold pieces. Ialyara was surprised the monks had put it up but then again it was likely they could not refuse. Religion in Araba was a delicate thing. While not technically outlawed, the state had pushed the churches of the myriad Gods out of cities centuries ago. "Disrespectful to the Monarch," said the public officials. "Damn lizards are scared of the competition," muttered disgruntled worshippers in the shadows. None were stupid enough to upset the yuan-ti nobility though, so Araba had developed a strong culture of mountain-top monasteries for all major religions where traditional priesthood was often abandoned in the favor of bodily training. Life was hard in the mountains, even if the Gods did provide. Her friend now gracing the gate with his likeness drawn from a scrying pool or some other magical means had been a child of one such monastery, no longer even devoted to any one God but the ideals of being one with the cycle of existence. How ironic then that the bodies of his brothers and sisters were floating upwards as smoke a few peaks westward from where she now stood. When Ialyara had attended the funeral of a particular friend and researcher of magic a mere two months back, she had been there to pay her respects and move on. She had not expected to be here now, thrown across half the world with strangers become friends in a mad search for artifacts of immense power. Artifacts they should not possess, that should only have a place in legends, uncovering secrets best left to the shadows or the Gods. Ialyara knew this would just be the beginning, Araba would not be the last place to take offense at their very existence. There would be other forces tugging at them, pushing and pulling, after their possession or lives, to use them or get rid of them. They were small wisps between blazing supernovas but damn, they were going to put up a fight. Ialyara sighed and picked up the pace. She needed to talk to the monks.

A lot of pets will ignore you, but only a cat will follow you from room to room and check your lines of vision to make absolutely certain that you can see them ignoring you.

fun fact: cats actually have very good peripheral vision and do a lot of checking things out with it. full-frontal staring into your face is, for them, an aggressive statement. hence they do that a lot when they’re trying to make you do stuff, like feed them or play with them.

if a cat sits with you but at an angle and won’t meet your gaze, they’re not ignoring you at all! they’re hanging out. they’re having chill bro time. 

if you want to smile at your cat, look at them till they see you, then give a slow blink. this is a cat smile. if a cat only glances at you to give you a blink and then looks away, that is a warm greeting, like, ‘hey there, buddy’. be polite right back at them and don’t seek out or hold sustained eye-contact in friendly, casual situations.

you guys remember when PETA stole people pets off their porches and euthanized them?

you guys remember how it came out that PETA kills about 90% of the animals it takes in, including healthy and adoptable puppies and kittens, stating “ We could become a no-kill shelter immediately. It means we wouldn’t do as much work”?

you guys remember when PETA advocated killing all pit bulls for the crime of being pit bulls?

you guys remember when PETA handed out these comics to children when there were no adults looking?

you guys remember when they made a porn site and then filled it with videos of animal abuse, and (also in that link) claimed cats should be vegetarian?

you guys remember when PETA lied about sheep shearing, got caught, and defended the lie as true even after they admitted the sheep in their picture wasn’t even real?

you guys remember when they tried to excuse their horrifying ways by claiming that the person who exposed them was manipulating the facts by taking them and putting them in the wrong context?

Because I remember. I remember everything.

Because PETA does not care about animals. they do not care that these dogs live and breathe and feel and want love like every other dog. they do not care about the history of human/dog bonding and co-evolution, they do not care that dogs and human beings have relied on each other for millennia, they do not care that its cruel and morally repugnant to put down an animal just because you can, they do not care about animals. 

PETA cares about money and publicity, its a corporation run by a psychopath who is afraid of pitts as it states in the link: she was apparently bit by one, and now she hates them. 

PETA doesn’t give a rats ass about animals. They just want to kill and make money off of idiots who fall of their spiel.

-spread false information about milk causing autism based on outdated bullshit information

-used holocaust imagery to compare the meat industry to concentration camps (no pictures)

-used a young man’s brutal death as a way to say “yeah that’s awful but it happens to animals every day and nobody cares about that” (tw: no pictures but the way the guy died is described and it is really horrible)

-dressed up in KKK robes and protested outside of the Westminister Dog Show to protest breeding/pure bred dogs (tw: racism)

-offered to pay the water bill for literally the poorest neighborhood in Detroit if and only if they all went vegan for a month (tw: self-righteous shitheads)

-and they definitely didn’t have two of their workers accept perfectly healthy animals from an animal hospital, with the implication that they would give them good homes, clarify that these animals were all healthy and well-tempered, and then euthanized them all in the back of a kill-van before dumping their dead bodies behind a grocery store (tw: PICTURES OF DEAD ANIMALS, animal death)

-and they totally didn’t get off pretty much scot-free for it because PETA has loads of money and lawyers to defend themselves, which coincidentally might be why the Cerate family hasn’t seen justice for their kidnapped and murdered dog, Maya. (tw: animal death)

Given their backgrounds, I think it’s safe to assume that Josephine and Leliana both speak Orlesian. And as a Nevarran princess, Cassandra was probably taught at least the basics of the Orlesian language as part of her early education.

So am I the only one who imagines the Ladies gathered around the war table and gossiping in fluent Orlesian, while Cullen just stands there, not understanding a single word, and politely pretending that he doesn’t know perfectly well they’re talking about him and the Inquisitor all the time?

OR BETTER STILL- As an officer candidate who might one day have to deal with the Templar command in Orlais Cullen was taught Orlesian and because he was always an eager student he learnt it pretty fluently. But when he joins the Inquisition he never lets on, because he refuses to be drawn into the pettiness of the Game. So the ladies of the war council gossip and giggle, with many amused looks his way, and think the content of their conversations a complete secret. Until one day while they are speculating about whether the Inquisitor objects to sleeping under the holes in his roof he quietly interjects, in fluent if poorly accented Orlesian, that actually she likes to see the stars. For a while they’re mortified: He’s known what they were talking about the whole damn time and made fools of them. But then Leliana starts deploying him to take notes when left alone with their oblivious Orlesian allies and he wishes he’d kept his damned mouth shut. Stopping Leliana and Josie from giggling about his liaisons with the Inquisitor was not worth this.

Working for years in the heart of Val Royeaux with the highest Chantry officials, Cassandra is surely also fluent in Orlesian. Given the relatively small territories of all the countries in Thedas, it's reasonable to assume that the few who had access to education learned many languages.
