In line with your post about Billy and assaulting women, what's critically interesting to me is that, outside of being possessed and the literal one (1) time he grabbed Max (and, if you look at her arm, his arm, his knuckles and his hold, he literally isn't even grabbing her that hard) we don't, ever, see him being remotely physically aggressive towards a woman.
The Stranger Things fanwiki describes him as a misogynist and while its true Billy is colorfully descriptive of women... That's about it.
Its just another direct reflection of how Billy's parental figures have shaped how he interacted with different sexes and how he perceives relationships with and the vulnerabilities associated with men vs women.
We have, in fact, seen Billy at his softest and most vulnerable because of women. Max at the sauna, El at the Last Battle... And in every opportunity where the source of his anger was a woman, he picked a fight with the boys. The men. When he could've got aggressive with Max because she was quite literally the source of his problems, he instead went after Lucas. And not just in a desperate attempt to try and stop himself from future trouble once again caused by Max and Max's actions.
In the literal entire two seasons that Billy was around we don't see him once even indicate a prevalence of female-focused violence. Not sexually or physically.
this... all of this, you said it so beautifully and I don't think I could've articulated this better myself. this is so true.
also keep in mind that fan wiki pages are often biased and they're not exempt from fans' prejudices. and it's very believable that the way he talked about girls in the car with max was him blowing off steam and using the psychological defense mechanism of displacement from his inner wound from abandonment.
it's also important to look at things from a mature adult perspective. max may have thought billy was unreasonable and controlling, but she was also a child. billy was older, billy knew a lot of things she didn't and what really happened behind closed doors and what would happen if neil found out about her activities and who she spent time around. everything he did, no matter how harsh he came off, was to PROTECT her and look out for her, making sure she didn't get into trouble either. they were both in danger living under the same roof as neil. that, and he was instinctively thinking about her well-being when he flipped on steve and lost it finding her at his house. put two and two together and it's understandable.
i really don't think billy is a misogynist just because he's made some rude comments about the high school girls. we saw him and heather taking care of each other in that weird other realm when the mindflayer got them. he tried to protect karen from him when he knew he wasn't in control of his own body by telling her to get away, because he didn't want to hurt her knowing the mindflayer did.
and finally going back to the beginning, billy "DON'T HURT HER" hargrove? i've seen some ice cold takes on here in this fandom especially lately and they couldn't be more wrong.
