Looking back at 90s models, the fashion, and the makeup trends is so interesting cause you can see how it progressed from that, to the 2010s, and then to recent years, and how trends and who influences them, and how people interact with them are much different now.
I think what is the biggest difference now from both the 90s and early 2010s is: people now are seeking to be seen as â______.â They want to be deemed something. They try to brand themselves.
When as in the 90s, the icons of the time were branded by others. Kate Moss didnât give herself the ârockstar trapped in a models bodyâ title, the magazines and people did.
The Olsen twins didnât say âyeah weâre the it girls of the indie sleaze styleâ they just were.
Zooey Deschanel didnât call herself âthe queen of twee,â the people deemed her that. That was how she liked to dress. You can see to this day thats the style she really loves and she puts her heart into it. Yes I know sheâs a nepo baby but thatâs not what Iâm focusing on rn.
Obviously kate moss was a model and didnât often style herself, and the olsen twins 100% participated in trends. But there was a genuine sense of self. It felt like they actually enjoyed themselves, and then it naturally bridged some gaps between hollywood and the rest of the world. Mary Kate didnât carry around a wine stained birkin cause she wanted to be deemed ad âa free uncaring cool spiritâ it was cause she really didnât care, and then people were like âoh cool how she really doesnât care.â
It felt like Cindy Crawford always wore mac spice lip pencil and revlon rum raisin because that what she loved.
Itâs like that one clip of debby ryan getting interviewed and sheâs asked what her go to product is right now and she says itâs just strawberry chapstick. Was she probably told to say that?? yeah. Was all of it still very much curated as all of it is today??? Yes absolutely.
But now celebrities are kinda different and it took that way of trends with them
Since I would say 2016, every influencer and celebrity has really tried to deem themselves as relatable. Authentic, genuine, just like us.
Remember how around like 2009-2014, Jennifer Lawrence was constantly mocked for being âweird, annoying, unprofessionalâ cause she wasnât polished 24/7??? Now thatâs what they all are.
Them trying to bridge the gap is what makes it so annoying to view. Both celebrities/influencers trying to be seen as âjust like usâ and also non famous people trying to get a following and be a c lister.
I would rather view a celebrity doing what they do on the carpets and premieres and be honest how itâs crazy and gloated, than they go âyeah Iâm totally just like you guys, quarantining in my manison.â
I would rather them try to be honest about how they are different. Blake Lively be honest sheâs wearing 400,000 dollars of jewelry to the superbowl and not try to be all humble n shit.
I would rather them not try to âmingleâ and just be honest they are rich and not like us. This really includes influencers who try to be like âHereâs my normal ditl living in a 20,000 dollar New York apartment.â Iâm looking at you directly Haley Kalil.
This is also kind of with Chappell Roan whereâs she made it clear âwhen Iâm off the job, Iâm a regular person. You do not get to interact with her or know her. When Iâm Chappell, then you can. Chappell is a persona and thatâs it. It is a project and it is a story that you get to view.â That is a significantly better and healthier way for celebs to act as well as people to interact with them.
When they let themselves be viewed as stories, it was easier to relate the same way you relate to a character in a novel.
This is a lot but my point is: They tried to gain authenticity, and so they actually lost it. They tried to normalize themselves and therefore lost all actual normality.
Maybe this is a crazy take and doesnât make sense but I donât really care
