“Violet, darlin’? — I brought your supper.”
Even when Beau was alive, the attic hadn’t been fit for living in. Bringing little Violet into the family meant changing that. Constance had done it all herself — cleared out the dust, the spiders, the cobwebs, laid down a rug, a proper mattress on the creaking bedframe. Fresh, clean purple curtains at the window, a very clever play on Violet's name, Constance thought. Not that Violet was much of a violet — when Constance first got her, she’d been a fierce little thing, and she could still spit fire. Still, years in the dark kept her good and tame.
And keeping Violet good and tame meant keeping Tate good and tame. That was all Constance wanted out of her second “daughter.”
Constance carried up the dinner tray. No one could accuse her of neglect: Violet’s dinner came on the same well-made floral china that the rest of the family ate from; she had an equal serving of roast ham, greens, and potatoes. There was a glass of water, a folded napkin, a fork — though no knife. Constance had cut up Violet’s meat for her, mindful of the dangers of sharp edges in an isolated space. She also didn’t trust what Violet could do with a knife; though Violet had had developmental years to grow accustomed to her lot in life, Constance knew that if she were locked in an attic, she would hoard every weapon, preserve every chance of escape.
“Aren’t you hungry?” Constance added, her voice ever the light tone she used with her young charge, as she stepped forward without fear into the murky semidarkness of the attic.

At the slightly unsettled tenor of the woman’s voice, I merely quirked a smile within the cover of the darkness. I sat, perched upon the wood of a chair, my frame draped casually against that of its spine before I plucked the silver tin free from my breast pocket. With the faint strum along the gear of a lighter, I knew she would be even more aware of me there- and I cared not as I stole a cigarette from my tin and set it aflame. “Who, indeed?” I finally spoke, my features faintly accentuated by the small wisp of a flame.
Quite abruptly, I turned on the lamp to my left, a crooked expression now visible from out the throes of the shadows. I took in a sharp inhale from my cigarette then, releasing the plume of smoke rather carelessly in her direction. “But then, you should know the answer to that, Constance. Tell me that you do not recognize me within the very marrow of your bones, within the very blackness of your soul, and I shall think you a rather poor liar, indeed.”
— Mama, the Devil's real, ain't he?
"Isn't he," Constance. — And he is. Very real. He tempts you all the time, doesn't he, to be wicked?
I've been good. I promise Mama I've been good, I've said all my prayers, every night, and I've only been drinkin' water, like you said, and I didn't eat lunch and I only had — Mama I promise, only toast for breakfast — and I haven't even looked at —
I know, Constance. You're a good girl, but the Devil wants to make you bad. You'll know when he's tryin'. His face'll come to you in the dark before you fall asleep, and his voice'll whisper in your ear as you dream, makin' you want all kinds of things. You'll know the Devil when you see him, baby girl.
Constance didn't know if it was the Devil or just an extension of him, the way the house seemed to be an extension of some primeval, unknowable evil, but her Mama'd been right: she knew him when she saw him, a dense collection of bad energy — a Billie Dean phrase, but the right one. He was bad juju in the flesh.
She cut to the chase, not bothering to play sweet and coy. It would've been no use. "If you're here to make a deal, I ain't buyin'."
"but constance we can’t be together u r the mother of my ex"
"yeah but he inherited his best moves from me"

—The flower was utterly exhausted. From what, she wasn’t sure. But her body ached, mind was spinning from boredom; and she couldn’t keep a single thought in focus. Pacing back and forth in the living room, Violet heard the unmistakable creak of the doorway. Someone was in the house.
Curiously, she wandered forward towards the kitchen. Constance dropped a pack of cigarettes, clearly for the flower to take. She was the only one who really took time to smoke, after all. Most of the other ghosts kept busy with sex and relationships.
Hands creeping forward, she snatched up the box. “-I’m not going to loose them.” Violet sighed, taking one out. “Why are you here?”
"Pleasure of your company," Constance said in a voice devoid of any of said pleasure.
Truth be told, Constance liked Violet. Had liked Violet. A bit. Before she died. She didn't usually like young people, and especially didn't like Violet's relationship with Tate, but Constance's world spun on an axis of half-truths and outright lies, and... How could she describe it? Violet didn't take bullshit.
She was still obnoxious, naturally. She'd be obnoxious for as long as she was a ghost - that was the danger of dying a teenager; they were God's most back-biting, contentious, ornery creatures.

Never did Constance miss Tate more than when he was avoiding her.
It didn't make her malleable, sweet, or supplicating towards him. She'd long since learned that trying to appease her son was useless. Missing him made her shriller, crueler, more demanding, an unconscious way of trying to crack his indifference, his apathy. She would have preferred he hurt her physically than look at her with those dark, blank eyes, like she was nothing at all.
"You can't ignore me forever," she said forcefully after two unsuccessful tries trying to get him to emerge from wherever ghosts hid in the murder house. Her taut jaw and her grip on her clutch purse betrayed her frustration. She supposed he was enjoying this.

Constance descended from the attic with care. High heels weren't particularly suited to visiting with Beau, but it had been worth the precarious climb up and the dust decorating her pink dress to see her son again. She mostly came to the house to see Tate, and deeply repressed as it was, she did have a capacity for guilt - especially when it came to her children. Beau had been overjoyed to play ball and pet her hair, which was currently down from its normal, careful upswept style - easier for Beau to navigate.
She brushed streamers of cobwebs and the collected dust from her dress with a barely repressed shudder, took her hairpins from the pocket of her cardigan, and began to redo her hair, moving down the hallway as she did.
Constance paused at the corner, hands stilling, her hair still half-down. Something felt different. Call it feminine intuition, or the good work of her sensitive nose, but something was off.
"Who's that?" she demanded of the seemingly empty house, whose inhabitants had always capitulated to her temper before.

A pack of smokes dropped onto the kitchen table.
As far as Constance was concerned, she'd just baited a trap for Violet. They chafed each other even at the best of times, but there was no doubt about it: Constance was the most reliable source of nicotine to ever pass through the Murder House, and even when they were taking cheap shots not across but through each other's bows, Violet was usually smoking one of Constance's Pall Malls.
"— And don't lose 'em this time," Constance said when she felt that thin, almost intangible change in the air that signaled the appearance of a ghost.
