he takes the cup of tea in his hand and gives it a slow sip. the liquid felt warm going down his throat. finnick could feel the hoarseness easing. this was likely the first thing he'd drank in hours. he pressed his hands against the porcelain of the glass as if to steady himself, still not entirely present or right of mind. her words whipped past him, his eyes closing at the sound, trying to take in each piece of information, uttering a low chuckle at her obvious annoyance. "i've never experienced such begrudging hospitality before." another sip, and he sighs, trying to will the lasting pressure at the base of his skull to dull and ease. he had a feeling he'd find no such luck. finnick's eyes open, rising to meet hers as he set the cup of tea back down on the surface. his expression falters for a moment at kim's explanation of her surprising expertise, something he quickly masks with a light cough and a wipe of his lips. "i'll replace your cigarettes, you know. maybe you won't carry me - which, whatever - but if you walk with me, we can stop and i'll get them."

all she wanted was peace, ignoring the rest of the world in her shitty trailer with music blasting in the background, and now she was playing field nurse. " i gave you a cup of tea, didn't i? i think that counts for something. " she said, walking around the area to pick up the stained towels and wrappers of her failed attempts. " oh, " kimberly debated mentioning the possibility of a scar, except lying to him would probably cost her more packs of cigarettes. " you might have a wicked scar. it'll be an interesting story to tell, you know, get some praise for surviging and all. " bizarre, she's told only a couple of people about her past, and most would show her an immense amount of pity. she was thrown off by the subject change, but internally grateful she didn't have to repeat the words ( i'm fine ) for hours. " walk with you? side by side? " a foolish question. " you can always give me the money, and i'll get them myself. " she lifted herself off the ground, leaning forward slightly to wipe away any remaining blood on him. her eyes hovering over to his eyes, only checking if he was all there before she spoke softly. " i'll walk with you, but not to get cigarettes, to take you home, then we never speak again, and this never happened. "

“we were only acquaintances when he was an ass,” he commented, not in defense, merely a fact. had you asked him about harrington before everything got shaken up he'd have pretty few nice things to say. “then he started to change for the better, and he made the choice to befriend me, the "troubled" one with the anger problem. the guy was spoiled for choice when it came to friends and for some reason decided to stick with me when i needed someone. earns him some loyalty from me, wouldn't you agree?”

a suspicious expression takes over his face as he studies the unopened sketchbook. “nothing too wild in here, right?” his question is posed with a playful smile before he flips open the cover. “see i'm poorly trained when it comes to listening to other's bullshit, never really listen to anyone shit talking art, gotta think that there is a reason art survives the collapse of kings, emperors, and queens.” he was several pages deep in her sketchbook now, her line work was solid for sure. “my work is stashed in my car, otherwise i'd share, be nice enough and i'll draw you something.”

" the last person to be judging, and still the words slipped out, indifferent. kimberly noticed how people admired steve and his willingness to change for the better. in fact, everyone she spoke to about him had nothing but positive things to say, while she was stuck in the past. " i don't know much about you, but you do seem like the type who doesn't really take any shit. harrington's lucky to have your loyalty, i wouldn't want to be on your bad side--you look, " her finger sized him up, lips curving into a smile. " like you could kick some serious ass. "

sharing was a foreign feeling, especially when it came to her sketches, kimberly cleared her throat. " you'll notice my favorite sketches are of a particular old couple. " maybe it was the time she had when working, gazing out the window, seeing the couple like clockwork. his mind was interesting to kimberly, a breath of fresh air--sanguinity. this was something unfamiliar to her; usually, these types of conversations ended in arguments. " nice enough? me offering for you to stay a couple of nights is not nice enough for you? i don't want you to draw me anything at all. " she did, but admitting would be like ripping herself apart. " this is me being nice enough by asking you if you need anything else to be comfortable? "

"Listen, if I can't get laid and you can't get laid, it's clearly an everyone else problem, not us." Licking her lips, she wrapped an arm around Kimberly. "Any preference for shots or should I just get the bartender to pick?"

her ears perked, and her head tilted when she heard her favorite words of the night. shots, bartender, and potential one-night stands. wasting no time chugging the rest of her beer, wiping away any dripping mess down her chin as she heard her words. " are you serious? what happens if i find the perfect man to sink my teeth into. i can't take him home? " kimberly formed a pout, a rare occasion, followed by a whine. " we need to find you a good lay. i've decided i want hard tequila, no chase, and lime on the side to get me ready to dance on these bar tables. "

"Well-" He hums, looking over at her in understanding, bobbing his head a couple of times. "The questions are mostly to gauge where your memory and cognition are at. Scans can show one thing while actually speaking to you shows another. You-" Callum glances at her chart again, looking over intake notes. Brows lift but otherwise his expression remains neutral. "It appears you were dropped off down in the emergency bay. No notes on who left you or anything though. You've got some bruising, a concussion and a couple of broken ribs.. are-" He clears his throat, trying to approach the subject gently but to him the situation presents as a very classic domestic abuse case or a random mugging and he doesn't want her to feel any worse than she already does. "If you're in any kind of trouble, we're here to help."

" right, i get it, you're a doctor checking if i'm still fully intact. " and that she was besides the throbbing sensation against her temple, glancing around the room to get an understanding of the situation. first, she wasn't in handcuffs, which meant no extra paperwork for her. second, her belongings--either the hospital had them, or she'd have to do the walk of shame with a mild concussion, possibly.

" that's shit news. " kimberly lowered her gaze to take a quick peek at the bruising already starting to show on her side. " you can't do much besides report it to the police and i can't afford to deal with them. " well aware of what it looked like to him, but she couldn't handle another person taking pity on her. " all i need you to do is discharge me, i'll walk back to get my wallet from the asshole who dropped me off here. i have a feeling he'd be at the bar not too far from here. can you do that for me? how long will it take? "

he smiles at her, genuinely enthused by kimberly's excitement. it had been a while since ryan had spent time with someone who seemed as interested in music technology as he was; he was buzzing with excitement at the prospect of spending the night in the studio with her, teaching her the ropes, if she didn't already know, showing her the ins and outs of recording a great track between transitioning rock songs for the radio. maybe he'd invite her to voice over an ad. ❝ it's cool if you don't pay attention, i hardly do anyway myself, ❞ ryan jokes in return. at her next question, he tilts his head to the side, thinking over the answer, and he shrugs, voicing the first thing that comes to his mind, as he habitually does. ❝ i dunno. maybe it's because my schedule never really allowed for it. i'm pretty busy. i have a band outside of the recording studio, and sometimes we're on the road. sorry if all that sounds like excuses. ❞

kimberly attempted to play down her excitement because it would be strange to show such an emotion to someone with whom she had barely spent time and only greeted him when in the same area. there was only a slight problem; she felt guilty for being such an asshole to him and acting as if he was invisible. " it's not that...alright, you caught me there. i have this horrible habit of ignoring people--maybe it's the drugs. " her tone was a mix between playful and sincere. " doesn't sound like excuses to me? you're busy and i don't have time to mingle. however, you've got my attention now. tell me more about this band? where do you play next? can i get a ticket? "

“Not for lack of my parents trying.” She admitted as she took that in, shrugging her shoulders. Honestly, she knew her parents had wanted more kids and weren't able to, but she figured they didn't have to get deeper into it than her parents wanted more. Instead, she smiles at what Kimberly says about Max. “That's normal for siblings though, isn't it? From what I've heard? You can bring her with you to the Spring performance,” Ally laughs, but she pauses when Kimberly mentions the video store, chewing on her lip. “If you mean Harrington, I'm gonna have to stop you right here...” Not because he wasn't cute, but the man didn't need his ego fluffed anymore than people already fluffed it, and she was still trying to figure out how she felt about him at the end of the day. “He's pretty, don't get me wrong, but trust me when I tell you that he's a right pain in the ass.”

the last hit she exhaled surrounded her lungs, and out came a cloud of smoke paired with a heavy cough. it's been a while since she took time to smoke an entire joint rather than save it for later, but kimberly still reached for another potato chip. " i'm a pretty shitty sister. pretty sure if i ask her to come, she'd tell me to fuck off. i can't blame her for that attitude. " dammit, kimberly tilted her head trying to put two and two together, and of course, the rumors about the cute guy would be him. " am i too high to even realize i see him almost every day? i swear it feels like i'm running more into him now than ever. " any chance spent with max, harrington was always there, and it made her question many things. " do you know what the hell is going on in hawkins? am i the only one oblivious? or is the town just shit? "

i know it's late, but as i'm typing out replies, i got an idea about kimberly having a one night stand after being completely out of her mind. someone who she never considered attractive, and all of a sudden she's waking up hungover, and the urge to suffocate them is there. only she picks up her things and stumbles out the front door, nearly half naked and making a ton of noise. she basically broke her own rule and i think it'll be funny

struck by the way she ridiculed the only hobby he had that might amount to a decent career for his future, a hand went to his chest. “bad art doesn't make any money,” he corrected quickly. “sure it might not make a person rich but there are plenty or artist who make a living off the work, plus depending on your area of art you can even get into movies. someone has to create the special effects makeup and stuff.” mars shrugs his shoulders. “obviously i'm into art myself, i'm more into drawing space and aliens than sketching unknowing strangers while people watching, though.”

kimberly tried to keep her face from forming disgust when the defense for harrington came forth; she had nothing against the man, but his personality irked her even after he decided to be a decent human being. " you and harrington? not that i care, but it's interesting because you don't seem half bad. don't take that as a compliment, i'm saying you don't give off dick. "

why was his reaction bringing soft laughter? nothing was amusing, but kimberly let out another chuckle. " i didn't mean...i'm trained properly by a lot of people telling me art isn't worth it. " wow, did she feel bad for talking shit about art to another artist? might as well put her in the grave. " here, " she placed herself beside him before squating to pull out her recent sketch book. " this is my apology for discrediting your talent. " the sketch book held quick sketches of tourists and locals. nothing too special, some quick line art, while others included shading. " i would've never guessed, mars. " she couldn't be too friendly, adding a tease brought her a sense of peace.

Mike will do anything for his friends. He has always been like this, and nothing would change that. He doesn't know much about Kimberly, he's not even sure Max is that close to her, but everyone who cares about Max needs to know how dangerous this is getting, now that Vecna has picked her as his target. Mike doesn't even know if it's possible to save her, but he knows he will do everything he can to make sure she doesn't die like Chrissy.

"She has... she has been isolating herself quite a lot lately." It's true, of course. After Billy's death, Max broke up with Lucas and she stopped haging out with the party most of the time. Maybe that's even the reason why Vecna picked her in the first place, and Mike hates that possibility because he's supposed to be able to protect his friends, he's supposed to make sure they stick together, no matter what. He runs a hand through his hair, not sure of how to explain the rest. "Listen, she needs people who care about her now more than ever. So if you care about Max, please, talk to her. She's at my place right now, with some of our friends, but... I'm not sure that's enough."

these fucking people never say a thing about what's happening in and outside town, which drove kimberly to the brink of insanity; this one in particular seemed to be the keeper of all secrets. all she wanted was a straight answer, but no one dared to tell unless her sister was in danger. always, always when her sister was already in danger---never during, kimberly bit the inside of her cheek as an attempt to keep her anger to a minimum.

" she lost someone who she considered family, i'm not surprised. how he died, shit, i have no idea." kimberly couldn't imagine what her sister was going through, but the times she met billy it ended with violence--usually with her storming out, leaving max to deal with the aftermath. it came wth the shitty sister deal. " no, you listen, what the fuck is going on? we have time before we get to your place. " it was then she realized that she knew none of the party who claimed to be her sister's friends, let alone know where they lived, and another to the shitty sister deal. " hold on, who the hell are you? how long have you been close to my sister? where do you even live? no, did she ask for me? i can't go, if she didn't ask for me, then i'll only make things worse. "

questions bounced off each other, but she was still grabbing her keys and then slamming the door shut behind her. face to face with the heroic mess in front of her, it was awkward because kimberly lacked one thing: a car. She was supposed to have a bunch of younger siblings, but medical complications caused her mother to only be able to have her. That left Ally with a bunch of attention and then no attention when her parents pulled back in their own sadness, and so she needed a new outlet: theater gave her that. “Maybe that's why we get along so well? I take attention off of you when you need it, and I don't have anyone to compete with for it if I'm feeling particularly needy one day.” That makes her laugh as she brings the joint back up to her lips and then she looks at Kimberly when she mentions a party and guys. “I mean...there are a couple I'd mess around with, but as far as anything other than that? No. These days, guys annoy the shit outta me.” Besides, her taste in men left much to be desired these days. “What about you?”
