Support Safe School Sanitation
Every child has the right to safe sanitation at school. But according to UN-Water's Sustainable Development Goal 6 Synthesis Report 2018 on Water and Sanitation, US$114 billion is needed each year to reach the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals on water and sanitation. That's why we started a GoFundMe page to raise money from individual donors for a new latrine. Our school's existing pit latrine block is thirty years old, and has design deficiencies in the pit substructure that threaten the life safety of students and teachers. The lack of enhanced passive ventilation through pipes that directly access the pit leads to accumulation of combustible methane and hydrogen sulfide under the latrine floor. This deficiency in the design of the substructure cannot be remediated without demolishing the latrine because the pit is not offset from the superstructure, or outhouse building. The best option for our school is to replace the current sanitation facility with a new latrine block connected to an available sewer line.
Toileting at school shouldn't be a life safety hazard. Yet for millions of schoolchildren in low- and middle-income countries like Kyrgyzstan, the unsafe and unsanitary conditions of school latrine facilities pose serious life and health risks. Read our story at https://bit.ly/2JBWN4A.
