Forgive the ignorance, but do Sufi's fall under the umbrella of Islam?

Sufism is a mystical movement that is influenced by Islam, so while it had its roots in Islam, Sufism focuses mostly on the “Spiritual and Esoteric” aspects of the Divine through remembrance, meditation, music and etc. However, the methodologies vary from order to order.

One particular Sufi order that is open for non-Muslims is called the Iniyati order, this order focuses on the Divine Oneness as a symbol of love, harmony, and vanity. It is a spiritual movement that shares some similarities to that of Buddhism in that it aims to reach the spiritual, while you detach completely from the material world to the point that you reach ecstasy or trance. How one reaches that point is entirely individual. This movement doesn’t focus much on “Islam’s” religious pillars, but rather, focuses entirely upon the Divine. How one interprets the divine is, therefore, individual.

Another order that accepts non-Muslims is the Chisti order.

I study mysticism/Sufism, and have affiliation with the Inayati Order!!!!

Some orders such as the Inayati order, founded my Pir Inayat Khan (an Indian mystic) find influence in many religions. The Inayati order was established in the early 1900s and takes influence from many religions. The Inayati order specifically derived influence from Native American religions, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, etc. and these orders of mysticism are quite popular in the West because of their pluralism.

Mystics will seek diverse means to express their love for God, and some such as Pir Inayat Khan will derive influence from religions outside of Islam. I’ve attended a few dhikr and healing sessions with the Inayati Sufi Center and most of the people who attend (besides me) are non Muslims.
