• Tests for differences between two independent treatment groups   • Use instead of an independent t-¬‐test • You make inferences about the populations from the sample data • U- evaluate the differences • For  U  to  be  significant  it  must  be equal  to  or  smaller than  the  critical  value- therefor if large you reject null • Less powerful then a test

Regression Assumptions

• Variables should be continuous • The relationship between variables should be linear • No outliers • Independence of observations • Homoscedasticity • Residuals should be normally distributed

Steps to find the Variance

1. Find the mean 2. Subtract the mean from each of your numbers in your sample. 3. Square all of the numbers from each of the subtractions you just did. 4. Add the squared numbers together. 5. Divide the sum of squares by (n-1). Remember, n is how many numbers are in your sample. Doing this step will provide the variance.

When to use each test

Between Subjects- One way Anova, Factorial Anova, T test

Within (repeated measures) Subjects- paired samples t test, Repeated measures Anova

Retrieval of memory is a process where information can be accessed out of the memory.  Retrieval cues are stimuli that help the process of retrieval.

Retrieval cues include associations, context, and mood.

Chi square

goodness of fit test uses sample data to test hypothesis about the shape or proportions of a population distribution. Is used when questionnaires are asked about frequencies.

Null hypotheses- No preference/ no difference    directional- more or less than we expected to find.

P= expected frequency (predicted amount from null hypothesis)

N= is sample

Chi squared= Fo (observed) – Fe (expected)2 divided by Fe

Repeated measures anova assumptions

Like paired samples t test SPERICITY(similar to homosceneity of variance) means variances within conditions are similar. No two conditions are dependent (larger correlation) than any other conditions.

for the line of best fit (B gives gradient of slope)

Y=Bo+Bxi+Bxii+Error    

Bo= Constant, Bi=Variable 1, Bii=Variable 2

Output summary “R” the higher the r score the better correlation- tighter fit, R2 is the amount of variance in Y accounted for in X- X100 to get a percentage.

Regression means we can predict things, shows strength, direction, and relationship. Regression involves minimise the distance between data points and the line.

Children typically learn consequences by watching other children, if a child sees a peer acting out aggressively and getting rewarded, they are more likely to imitate that aggressive behavior. (Huesmann, 1998)

Reliability

Reliability- measurement is consistent/repeatable and you get similar results.

Methods to get reliability- test-retest and inter rater reliability.

CAN BE RELIABLE WHEN NOT VALID

CANT BE VALID IF NOT RELIABLE.

Validity- measures what we intended to- allows us to know real world effect and causes. Truth.
