Farnoush lives in two different worlds. In one she is an economist, by profession. In the other, she is an artist, because this is her passion. I met her in Tehran, Iran, last year. These days I’m in Kolkata, India.

I met Angela on the shores of Sava river, the place where many residents of Belgrade, Serbia, sunbathe during summer. I noticed that even in moments of relaxation most Serbian women radiate strength and confidence.

I continue my journey through the Balkans. These days I’m in Bulgaria.

Even on the rainy days, most of the people of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, prefer to walk or use a bicycle, rather than a car. Emilia stopped for a few minutes and told me about the happiest moment of her life. She was recently chosen for an important part in an opera. To step on the stage of Royal Swedish Opera, at only 20 years old, as a soprano, was an incredible experience for her. Being surrounded by famous opera singers and having her family in the audience made her prouder than ever. I’m sure that this is just the beginning of a wonderful career.

I met Alice a few days ago on the streets of Timisoara, Romania where she was celebrating her high school graduation.

She told me that the first years of school were terrible because of some bullies from her class. “You’re stupid” was the most common insult that she heard. She didn’t have self-esteem, she couldn’t focus on learning and her marks were really bad. After she started to ignore the bullies, her marks improved spectacularly and this year she was among the first at the National Mathematical Olympiad.

I think most of the times, succeeding is more about confidence than about talent. We are all gifted in one way or another. We just have to see ourselves as we are, not as others tell us we are.
