Primus. Assassin, junior rank. Up until recently, when someone asked who he was, that was the answer he always gave. But he wasn’t in the Cave anymore. So he had to pause a moment to think of the right answer. And he said it with just as much professionalism, if a bit more slowly.
“Kyler Mackey.”
Victorie rocks back onto her heels and sticks one hand in her back pocket, the other reaching up to hold Oliver’s. The pause confirmed any bad feelings she had about him. There was no way he wasn’t lying about something.
Oliver snorts, looking the other boy up and down. “Okay, sure then.” He mutters under his breath, not intending for the next part to be heard. “Totally normal to have to think about what your name is.”
Staring. God, he hated staring. Frustration welled. Conversation was stupid. Why did he have to do it? Right. Tobias. "I'm making you uncomfortable." It wasn't a question. "I'll just go."
He’d never been on his own a day in his life. Excluding contracts. He liked them because everything was quiet and nobody talked to him. “How old are you?”
“Twenty-one,” she said. “It’s not really all it’s cracked up to be.” Andy glanced at him. “What about you?”
“Seventeen. Almost eighteen.” He tilted his head and guessed, speaking slowly: “Because…of rent?”
Seventeen. At seventeen, she’d been in over her head with dark magicks. She thought about it for all of a second, before she smiled at him, pointing a finger at him. “Bingo. Actually, more accurately, it’s responsibilities. Being an adult sucks.”
"Sounds like it," he said, quietly. Thankfully he'd never have to worry about responsibilities like that. He wondered if the odd, dull ache in his chest was a sort of regret. He could go to school but he'd never be normal.
She was doing that thing they all did. The moving away. The weird looks. He didn’t know what he was doing wrong, but behaving normally looked like it was going to take awhile to master. Her increased proximity got rid of two of his options. Five remaining. Still, at least she wasn’t a threat to him. “Central High,” he said, simply. “Why’d you drop out?”
“Cool.” she’d never heard of the school before, this was her first week in this new town; but she wouldn’t let him know that. As the sun began to set, Kaye felt it was safe enough for her to remover her shades. She didn’t like the way they felt on her face and dulled her vision, though at the time they did what they were meant to do. Keep the sun out. As she removed her shades, she turned to look at Kyler. “To work at Chow Fats Chinese resturant. When your mom’s in a band, a lot of bills don’t get paid.” she said facing back forward.”Besides that, you spend a lot less on food.” She didn’t mention the fact that now, all of that had changed, and the reason she couldn’t go to school was because of all of the iron used in just about everything; and that even the smell of it made her sick.
"Huh."
Kyler nodded. A very tiny, amused smile crossed his lips. His story was the reverse of hers. He'd done nothing but work all his life, and now--on the cusp of adulthood--he was supposed to have a "school experience" to make sure he didn't turn out to be some sociopathic murderer. Tobias's idea. Still, it was funny.
Kyler fell into step beside her. As far as new experiences went, this one wasn’t so bad. “Did you sneak out, too?”
She chuckled a bit at his words and shook her head. “Ah, no.” She swept hair back over her shoulder as she shrugged. “I don’t have to sneak out. I have my own place. One of the perks of young adulthood. And also one of the cons too, because there’s rent. I used to sneak out though, all the time.”
He’d never been on his own a day in his life. Excluding contracts. He liked them because everything was quiet and nobody talked to him. “How old are you?”
“Twenty-one,” she said. “It’s not really all it’s cracked up to be.” Andy glanced at him. “What about you?”
"Seventeen. Almost eighteen." He tilted his head and guessed, speaking slowly: "Because...of rent?"
“She died, actually. I’m seventeen.” It was in his nature to answer questions posed to him. Unless they were about the particulars of his work, in which case he could become as stony-faced as the gargoyles he sometimes perched with. His own personal details had been common knowledge since he was small. He saw nothing wrong with it.
“Through birth or other means? Condolences to your form on the passing of your mother,” she explained, her eyes roaming over his features far more to acquire the presumption of his mother’s. He was young, seventeen, ripe to marry and court a wife or a husband. Did he lay with one, both, or was he as the one whom she came upon? Asexual? “Where were you to take yourself this evening in a rush?”
"Other means." Other means like a knife through her spine. Kyler hardly blinked. Nobody had ever given him condolences. He hadn't known his parents and the people who had known his parents weren't really all that inclined to hugs and cooing. "I was late getting home. Don't want my uncle to worry."
He'd never been on his own a day in his life. Excluding contracts. He liked them because everything was quiet and nobody talked to him. "How old are you?"
“Kyler,” he replied simply. People didn’t like to be stared at. He knew that. Or rather he’d learned it pretty quickly. So he looked away again, keeping her in peripheral. He’d already figured at least half a dozen ways to kill her where she stood. That was probably enough to be safe. “Where do you go to school?”
“Dropped out a long time ago.” The day she mastered reading a human’s mind couldn’t come soon enough. It could’ve been the sixth sense that most faeries had, or the fact the guy creeped her out, that told her he was still watching her. Either way, whenever she ft something, she knew to always go with the instinct. Kaye moved in the opposite direction slightly, far enough to where he couldn’t touch her. “What about you?” she asked, making simple polite conversation and not really caring about the answer.
She was doing that thing they all did. The moving away. The weird looks. He didn't know what he was doing wrong, but behaving normally looked like it was going to take awhile to master. Her increased proximity got rid of two of his options. Five remaining. Still, at least she wasn't a threat to him. "Central High," he said, simply. "Why'd you drop out?"
He wasn’t sure eating with someone was a good idea, since he was just getting conversing somewhat down. But she didn’t give him weird looks. And she smiled. He liked that. So he just nodded.
When he nodded, Andy grinned widely and nodded a bit herself. “Cool,” she answered, before turning and starting back down the street.
Kyler fell into step beside her. As far as new experiences went, this one wasn't so bad. "Did you sneak out, too?"
Kyler stared, absorbing details like a sponge. He blinked once or twice. She was definitely hungover. He’d seen Tobias bitch and moan like that more than one morning. Once or twice he’d even had to make the man tea and throw a blanket over him. Like he was the support unit.
“Never said you wanted anything,” he pointed out, simply. “I just said ‘what’.”
“Whatevz, Dude.” she said turning back the way she had been before he’d said anything, not really in the mood to argue. There was only enough space for one smart ass where she stood. Kaye stood quiet for a few moments. She could feel him analyzing her inside of his mind; she could tell that he did this often; not sure if he had some type of a problem, or if he was just one of those smart kids she hated when she used to go to school that had to make sense of everything they saw. “Name’s Kaye.” she said without looking at him.
"Kyler," he replied simply. People didn't like to be stared at. He knew that. Or rather he'd learned it pretty quickly. So he looked away again, keeping her in peripheral. He'd already figured at least half a dozen ways to kill her where she stood. That was probably enough to be safe. "Where do you go to school?"
She just disappeared. At first it was normal. She just crouched down at the side of the pavement and Kyler simply had to shift positions. But when his eyeline should have reasserted and found her tying her shoe, there was nothing. Blank space. Alarms went off and Kyler instantly pivoted on his heel and began making his way back the way he’d come. He’d been made. That meant immediate bailing. Any operative knew when to run and disappear and Kyler realized he’d picked a not-so-average practice subject.
He became aware of someone walking at his elbow a bit too insistently just when she spoke. His instinct was to attack; one he’d thankfully managed to master only a few weeks after being outside of the Company’s headquarters. Giving up the walking ruse, he simply stopped and faced her, gaze even.
“I was bored. Your fox caught my eye. I’m sorry.”
When he stopped, Miranda did likewise and took off her sunglasses, Rowan sniffing suspiciously around his feet. She shrugged a shoulder, amuse smile on her face. “Don’t worry about it, dear. Nothing wrong with finding people interesting.”
It was then that Rowan decided it wasn’t okay, though, and planted himself between the pair of them, teeth bared and growling low at Kyler. Miranda glanced down. “Apparently not everyone agrees.” But she continued to smile. “Just pick your mark better next time, hmm?”
He'd never actually seen a real fox. Then, he supposed most people probably hadn't. He wondered why she had it and then he dismissed the thought, just watching the little creature investigate his sneakers. When it started growling, he raised an eyebrow. Could the world's craftiest prey sense a killer when it smelled one?
"We learn from our mistakes," he murmured to the woman. A cliche he'd had bouncing around his skull along with his brain during many a session. Along with: Practice makes perfect. He pointed at the defensive creature. "He doesn't like me, does he?"
“I don’t know,” he admitted, brow furrowing further. It wasn’t like he got asked that question a lot. What did he want? Not important. He did what he was supposed to do. “I’m…kinda hungry?” he half-guessed, looking back at her, cautiously.
“Kinda hungry is good. It’s better than being too full, or starving. A happy medium.” Andy pushed away from the wall. “Well, I was headed to this Chinese place down the block. If you feel like tagging along, that’s cool. It’ll give you something to do.”
He wasn't sure eating with someone was a good idea, since he was just getting conversing somewhat down. But she didn't give him weird looks. And she smiled. He liked that. So he just nodded.
He shook his head, slowly, wondering if that was weird. Not that he hadn’t already marked himself as weird the first day he stepped into a school building. “I never really…could.”
The grin stayed on her face. “Better late than never. I say make the most of it. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do?” She crossed her arms, leaning against the wall of the building they were standing near, watching him. His aura was… interesting. She always tried to avoid reading others without their permission—it was just rude. But it some cases, she really couldn’t. Like now. “I was just going out for something to eat.”
"I don't know," he admitted, brow furrowing further. It wasn't like he got asked that question a lot. What did he want? Not important. He did what he was supposed to do. "I'm...kinda hungry?" he half-guessed, looking back at her, cautiously.

“What?”
Slightly tilting her head forward, Kaye lowered her sunglasses and rose a single brow. On her face, an expression of annoyance was plastered. “Dude, are you serious?” each word was emphasized with a slight movement of her head. “What makes you think I want something?” Last night she’d had a little too much fun with a few locals, and was still much too hungover to strengthen her glamour. The sun was 10 times as bright and everything else was 10 times as loud, moreso than it would’ve been with glamour; and her attitude, she was 10 times more terrible than it would’ve been any other day. Luckily it was midday and the sun was going down, so that would at least dull her massive headache.
Kyler stared, absorbing details like a sponge. He blinked once or twice. She was definitely hungover. He'd seen Tobias bitch and moan like that more than one morning. Once or twice he'd even had to make the man tea and throw a blanket over him. Like he was the support unit.

Kyler could disappear in the blink of an eye. He could blend, or outrun prying eyes, dart sideways, and never be seen again. But that all went to waste when the kid refused to jump through the brief window of opportunity Tobias provided. The handler’s frustrated sigh was cut off into another flawless smile as he turned at the sound of nearing voices. Now there had to be cover stories.
Briefly, he thought about letting Kyler answer. Then he realized the kid would likely say something along the lines of the truth, so he shrugged. “Amazing, right? This kid’s the star of my team. Been playing since he was a kid, isn’t that right?”
Kyler glanced at him, but was soon staring back at the silent girl. “Guess so.”
“Also not a talker. And we’re late for practice, so—”
“You saw me.” Kyler tilted his head, speaking to the redhead. “Before everyone else did, I mean.”
Ira nodded, still smiling amicably. Not a devious bone in his bone so far as Aurora had found. He could navigate the shark-filled waters that comprised social niceties, small talk, and gossip, so if caught together in public, she let him do the talking. Besides, sport held no interest to her, unlike the person in front of her. It took a lot of practice and training to do things like free-scale buildings and rescue flying objects on the fly.
Her companion had started to wave off the comment, taking the hint that they had places to be, when the ‘star of the team’ spoke, drawing his attention as well. Aurora blinked. “I look up,” she said, as if that explained everything.
Ira aimed a wry look at Tobias, gesturing a hand at the female in their company. “Not a talker either.”
At the girl's reply, the tiniest of smiles made an attempt at tugging Kyler's lips. He didn't look away from her, but the gesture caught Tobias's attention and even shut him up for a moment. It wasn't exactly the social interaction he was going for, but it was the first time he'd seen the kid smile genuinely while conversing with another human being. So he stopped trying to usher Kyler away and glanced at the other boy.
"Well, this'll be a short conversation, then." It was said with a bit less schmooze than he'd used before. More real, and serious. But he glanced over at the still-murmuring crowd. Sometimes he forgot people had normal lives. "Let's have it somewhere else, though, huh? Park down the block. Nice and open."
Kyler glanced at him sharply, but nodded once. Kyler hated 'nice' and 'open' places. Tobias sighed. That was test enough. The kid really liked this girl.
