After putting out a formal request for information about pain management alternatives to opioids in February, the NFL and NFL Players Association are providing $1 million to fund research on cannabinoids and pain relief, according to Front Office Sports. “While this represents a different stance by the league, it’s still conservative compared to players who use cannabis or cannabis products – particularly CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has gained mainstream acceptance,” per FOS. The NFL did shorten the window during which it tests players for THC and raise the threshold to trigger a positive test last season, but players can still be fined several weeks’ salary and be forced to join a treatment program for testing positive for the inhibiting chemical in marijuana. SEATTLE — Licensed marijuana stores in Washington state can offer free joints to promote on-site Covid-19 vaccine clinics, officials said Monday. The state Liquor and Cannabis Board is calling the effort the “Joints for Jabs” program. The board says licensed adult-use marijuana retail shops can give away a single pre-rolled joint to anyone over 21 who gets a shot at an on-site vaccine clinic held by July 12. The board has already allowed breweries, wineries and restaurants to offer free drinks in exchange for proof of vaccination — though alcohol-serving establishments have not had to host a clinic on-site to give out product. Other incentives being offered in Washington include free sports tickets and prize money of up to $1 million. The idea is to persuade more people to become vaccinated, helping to control the deadly virus and helping Washington to fully reopen more quickly. Gov. Jay Inslee intends to lift all Covid-related restrictions at the end of the month or when 70 percent of those over 16 have received at least their first vaccine dose, whichever comes first. More than a year after announcing a partnership with musician Drake, Canadian cannabis producer Canopy Growth Corp. has ended the relationship. Canopy terminated a joint venture with Drake’s More Life Growth Co. to sell cannabis in the Canadian and global markets in March, BNN Bloomberg reported, citing the company’s regulatory filings. “We have indeed divested from More Life and the facility in Scarborough which had been intended to be part of that agreement is now Canopy Growth’s R&D facility, where we will work on plant science and science development projects,” Jennifer White, director of communications at Canopy Growth, said in an emailed statement to BNN Bloomberg. A representative from Drake’s management team wasn’t immediately available for comment. Canopy and Drake announced the deal in November 2019 involving Toronto-based More Life, 60% owned by the superstar artist and 40% owned by Canopy. Previously a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canopy, it was already licensed to cultivate, process and sell cannabis. In the filing, the company said it took a C$10.3 million ($8.6 million) impairment charge on the venture in the fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31. Amazon will no longer test most job applicants for marijuana use in the latest sign of America's changing relationship with pot. Amazon, the second-largest private employer in the U.S., also says it now backs legalizing marijuana nationwide. "In the past, like many employers, we've disqualified people from working at Amazon if they tested positive for marijuana use," the company said in a blog post on Tuesday. A group of local veterans is trying to raise awareness about mental health with the help of cannabis. The Marines founded Helmand Valley Growing Company after feeling the effects of post-traumatic stress. The veteran owned cannabis brand is sold in dozens of dispensaries in California and all profits go to veteran medical cannabis research. “You have a lot of great men and women who went forward to fight for us and now they’ve returned and physically they’re back here but spiritually they’re not. We want to be that beacon of light to help them live that American dream that they fought to defend,” said Bryan Buckley, President and CEO of HVGC. Buckley founded the company along with two other Marines. The former special operations Marines are Afghanistan veterans who returned home with physical and emotional wounds. “Getting off the opioids was an eye opener. Stopping the bottle of Jack Daniels a night. Cannabis was that in between to help me step off,” said Andy Meyers, Director of Cultivation at HVGC. HVGC sells cartridges that can be used with vaping devices. The cannabis sales go toward their non-profit, Battle Brothers Foundation. LONDON — Oxford Cannabinoid Technologies, which enjoys backing from rapper Snoop Dogg and tobacco giant Imperial Brands, launched last Friday on the London Stock Exchange. The British company, which specializes in pain-alleviating cannabinoid drug development, raised gross proceeds of £16.5 million ($23.4 million) in its initial public offering, with a starting market value of just over £48 million ($69.1 million). Snoop Dogg, real name Calvin Broadus Jr., has invested in multiple cannabis start-upsincluding OCT through his venture capital firm Casa Verde. His firm has also backed plant-based food companies such as Outstanding Foods and tech names like Klarna, Robinhood and Reddit. As Virginia prepares to legalize adult possession of up to an ounce of marijuana on July 1, drug-sniffing police dogs from around the state are being forced into early retirement, following a trend in other states where legalization has led to K-9s being put out to pasture earlier than planned. In Virginia, the rush to take marijuana-detecting dogs out of service began even before lawmakers voted last month to accelerate the timetable for legalization. A separate law that went into effect in March prohibits police from stopping or searching anyone based solely on the odor of marijuana. Virginia state police are retiring 13 K-9s, while many smaller police departments and sheriff’s offices are retiring one or two dogs. Most are in the process of purchasing and training new dogs to detect only illicit drugs, including cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines. Some departments are unable to afford up to $15,000 to buy and train a new dog, so they are disbanding their K-9 units. The dogs trained on multiple drugs alert in the same way for all of them, so it's impossible to tell whether they are indicating the presence of marijuana or an illicit drug. The dogs also cannot distinguish between a small, legal amount of marijuana or a larger, still-illegal amount of the drug. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf (D) has pardoned an ophthalmologist who served six months in jail in 2014 for growing cannabis for his sick wife before the state legalized the plant for medical use. Dr. Paul Ezell lost his ability to practice medicine as a result of his conviction. At the time of his arrest, Ezell said he began growing cannabis to help his wife reduce the use of prescription opioids. The grow was discovered after someone reported Ezell after finding some plant clippings in the trash as the doctor was disassembling the operation. According to a press release from Lt. Gov. Webber Wild funds education and training for persons of color pursuing careers in the cannabis sector. After years of delay under the Trump administration, the federal government is preparing to award the first new licenses for cultivating cannabis for scientific research, giving U.S. marijuana operators a crack at entering a business that has been dominated by the University of Mississippi for more than 50 years. The Florida State Boxing Commission has made a major change to its policy regarding cannabis. the commission voted to essentially eliminate marijuana from its prohibited drug list, Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation spokesperson Patrick Fargason told ESPN on Tuesday. Previously in Florida, even trace amounts of cannabis found in a fighter's system would lead to a suspension, fine and a victory getting overturned. "We're not testing for it," Fargason said. "We're not doing anything with it -- period." The change was based on a recommendation from the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) medical advisory committee, as well as the UFC's anti-doping policy run by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), "The Committee further states that THC is not a performance enhancing drug, it is a performance suppressor and athletes who test positive for THC should not be punished in the same manner as an athlete that tests positive for performance enhancing drugs," the statement read. The executive director of a farmers’ market group recently started a push to allow cannabis to be sold at farmers’ markets in Nova Scotia. “The farmers’ market could be the perfect place for that type of product to be sold in a safe and controlled environment,” Justin Cantafio, executive director of Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia, recently told CBC. As it stands right now, the only legal way for a cannabis grower to sell cannabis in Canada is via a licensed distributor. Getting the current law changed to allow for craft cultivators to be able to sell their harvests at a farmers’ market will be an uphill battle.
