[TRANS] NCT U DAZED MAGAZINE 2016 JUNE ISSUE
Within 2 weeks of debut you rose as candidates for 1st place on music programmes, congratulations! It’s a successful start, what are your thoughts on it?
TAEYONG: I still can’t believe it up to now. I’m thankful as it seemed there were many people who showed us affection and interest, I’d like to repay it with cool performances and music in the future.
DOYOUNG: It’s interesting/amazing seeing our names on the main screen of portal sites.
MARK: Although it still doesn’t feel very realistic yet it’s fun when my friends in school talk about having watched it well.
TAEIL: I’m still a little bewildered and out of it but I’m carrying a joyful and thankful heart.
TEN: To not disappoint the fans that have been supporting us of course we have to work even harder!
JAEHYUN: I am thankful and carrying thoughts of having to work harder. I hope to be able to receive even more love in the future.
As much as the amount of spotlight you have received as SM’s new group in 4 years, do you feel burdened by it?
DOYOUNG: Although it’ll be a lie to say that there is no burden, the sense of burden also becomes a motivation to work even harder. We can’t damage what the seniors have made(?).
TAEYONG: As much as there is burden there is confidence, as we have worked hard preparing for 4 years we have many images/sides to show!
JAEHYUN: Now that we’ve debuted (t/n: as in experienced), I have came to admire the seniors more.
TAEIL: The seniors have opened up the path ahead well, so now we have to create a new path with a goal that belongs to us.
What meaning does the new path that NCT U is going to open up hold?
ALL: Like an unknown path that has never been walked on before, we want to show a completely new one. Without being locked in one frame we will show new music and performances each time.
This is a unit group without constraints on nationality and number of members, what kind of thoughts did you have the first time you heard about it? And if you were to choose an advantage that only NCT U has?
JAEHYUN: The first time we heard we too couldn’t perfectly understand the concept (laughs). So far there are still many people who think it’s strange, but we will slowly show the colour that only we have.
TAEYONG: As much as we are not a team that strives to show just one kind of image, the music and performances we will present in the future are boundless. I think the possibility of being able to open infinitely is our biggest advantage.
TEN: I think as all of the members’ nationalities, ages, preference of music and colours are different we form a new synergy from each other.
TAEIL: Just like the team name “Neo Culture Technology” we are able to promote as a variety of units.
DOYOUNG: There is a feeling of pride from being a group with a new concept that has never existed before. We always mention “worldwide” when we introduce our team, I hope for us to become an artiste group that is able to receive attention from Asia, Europe, and even America, from around the world. Wouldn’t it be possible for us to be based around the world as much as our members are gathered?
I heard that “The 7th Sense” is a song currently receiving a lot of attention that has used future bass as its foundation. Personally it was a fresh listen as this is a genre that hasn’t been heard much domestically. Does everyone like the debut song? What are the music styles that each of you like?
TEN: As I like R&B, EDM, hip-hop, groovy rhythmical and funky music I really liked this debut song! I think it mixes well with the elements each member likes.
TAEYONG: I’n the type that changes the kind of music I like with each cycle, just awhile ago I was into the genres of R&B and dubstep, but now I have fallen for classic, just abit ago I was listening to Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘Rain’ on repeat.
JAEHYUN: For me it’s the R&B genre songs!
MARK: Without distinguishing music I like them all. Recently I like Justin Bieber!
DOYOUNG: Compared to electronic I prefer acoustic, this time after coming across the future bass genre I completely fell for it. As a genre that is unfamiliar in kpop, for us to be an idol group that has attempted it I feel happy and proud.
There are still members that hasn’t yet officially “attacked”, as much as there is freedom for the recruitment of team members, don’t you have intense competition between each other?
TEN: As we’re all going to do it together later on, there isn’t the atmosphere of keeping each other in check or competing, we’re each working our hardest.
TAEIL: Many might expect that but because we’re already a team we cheer each other on.
JAEHYUN: As we’ve been together for a long time since being trainees, now we have a very close biological brothers-like relationship.
That’s heartwarming. Then there are bound to be many interesting happenings with the gathering of members with diverse nationalities.
TAEYONG: The friends that entered through global audition like Ten or Mark adapted to Korea rather well. Now it’s like they’ve almost became Korean (laughs). It’s to the extent that there isn’t a Korean dish that Ten can’t eat.
TEN: It’s fun when the we talk about our own countries between the members.
DOYOUNG: Sometimes between the members there are times where they speak in English or Chinese, it’s as if there’s an air of evaluation (laughs).
MARK: To be honest adapting was difficult at first. As the culture was different from in Canada. But since I became close with the hyungs I started adapting quickly. Thank you for always taking care of me.
JAEHYUN: Firstly as there is a unique culture in each’s country there is a basic atmosphere of respect. Therefore by understand and being considerate of each other there have been no conflicts.
Although there isn’t an official team leader, who is the one mainly playing the role of the leader?
ALL: Although there is no fixed (leader), it’s a different person depending on the things we have to do. Like during singing, performing or having an interview, the person to be the leader depends on the situation.
How about the team’s atmosphere maker?
ALL: Mark! As he is the youngest in the team he has a lot of aegyo. Even if he just sits still he is still cute.
You are called “SM’s Future”. What kind of image does NCT U have for their dream future?
ALL: Being called “SM’s Future” is quite the burden (laughs)! But as much as that we can feel the pride and responsibility. First of all we want to build our own identity and be acknowledged for being a group that has its own definite colour. And in the future to promote widely with world stages as our goal, just like our team motto of being a worldwide group. Not just working hard, we want to do well. Just like the words “SM’s Future”, we really want to be the best!
