In the winter of 1931, a Scottish businessman named Norman Loudon purchased Littleton Park to set up his film company ‘Sound Film Producing & Recording Studios’. The studios produced short and feature films, which quickly rose to fame and expanded enormously (pinewoodgroup.com, 2008).

There was no evidence of shortage of film studios for producers to choose from at that time, there were several working studios in and around London at the beginning of the 1930s. A striking advantage Loudon had over his business rivals were that their studios were already built during the silent era and refurbished rapidly to keep in track of the trend of sound films back in the 1920s (pinewoodgroup.com, 2008).

While Elstree, a village in the Hertsmere borough of Hertfordshire, and other villages had to be refurbished, Sound City had the advantage of beginning from scratch, erecting two purpose-built soundproofed stages within the span of six months. Discovering ancient Surrey

The facts that indicate this village was once a shepherds’ hamlet were the findings of Saxon artefacts and an Anglo-saxon version of the place name ‘Scepertone’ (exploringsurreyspast.org.uk, 2012).

One of the oldest churches in Shepperton namely, St. Nicholas Church dates from 1614 but contains 12th and 13th century work. Significant features of the church include the Royal Pew placed at its west end and is followed by a separate external staircase. The forefront of the church is surrounded by hotels and shops and while the further part offers access to the river; the main roads have sharp bends and are narrow adding to the area’s characteristic feature. Surging land and house price values push UK’s total worth to £10 trillion

According to official figures, rising land and house prices have been added almost half a trillion pounds to the country’s net worth last year.

UK Witnesses Record Breaking Green Belt Housing Applications

In 2017, applications to build an additional 35,000 homes on the Green Belt were submitted adding up to the total number proposed for construction on protected land to a record of 460,000.

According to recent data shared by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) released on Monday, more than 24,000 homes were constructed in the UK’s Green Belts in the past nine years (theguardian.com, 2018).

The CPRE found that in 2017 – 18, more than 8,000 homes were built on the Green Belt with 4,800 on brownfield sites and 3,300 on previously undeveloped land. In comparison to more than 4,000 completions in 2016 -17 of which 1,000 were on greenfield sites (theguardian.com, 2018).

Only a small proportion of the land is currently held as Green Belt in the UK. In 2017, 315 hectares were built, that makes up 0.002% of the UK’s 1.6m hectares of Green Belt.

Sarah Lee the head of policy at the Countryside Alliance, said some land should be removed from the Green Belt with stricter rules on the remainder. The House Building Success Story

In recent events, Housing Secretary, James Brokenshire, has announced that the government will invest £1.67 billion in delivering 23,000 affordable homes in England. 601 New Homes Approved on the UK Greenbelt

According to a reporter, 601 houses on greenbelt land in the lowlands of Scotland has been approved due to the local housing shortfall that needs to be addressed immediately rather than waiting two years for the implementation of a new local development plan. 

The appeal indicates 70 hectares of farmland in Overtown, a village in North Lanarkshire. The appellant pursued the permission to build up to 601 homes on the site, along with community and retail uses. The site lies in an area of great landscape value (AGLV), however, it encompasses only 0.54 percent of the area. (theplanner.co.uk, 2018)

UK’s soaring housing supply

According to the previous housing pipeline report from the HBF and Glenigan, planning permissions were granted for over 350,000 new homes in 2017. This demonstrates a clear commitment from house builders to deliver the new homes needed.

In the past four years, housing supply is up by 74% and over 217,000 new homes were completed last year, which means that the industry is on track to deliver the government’s housing target of 1 million homes between the years 2015-2020.

Chancellor Philip Hammond proposed at the “2017 budget” that 300,000 homes should be the annual target.

‘The number of applications being submitted and approved is a clear demonstration of the industry’s commitment to increase the housing supply even further than the last four years figures’, said Steward Basely, Executive Chairman at the HBF.

They explain that one of the challenges facing the government as it revives the National Planning Policy framework is the lack of time it takes they have to acquire a development scheme from the outline planning permission to a phase where construction can commence.

Will 2018 see more housing on UK greenbelts?

According to recent forecast, an average of 210,000 new households will be developed in England between the years of 2014 and 2039. 

The sum of housing stock in England increased by around 217,000 residential dwellings, which is about 15% higher than increase witnessed in 2017 but short of the estimated 240,000– 250,000 new homes required to keep up with the household formation.
