â§Â A few hours earlier, Stefan had wrestled absolute control from his debt to Klaus.  And for someone whoâd just won their freedom, his world hardly differed from the one he lived in only 24 hours ago. A prisoner to the mind.  Now facing the battle that always came back to haunt him.  He could surrender to his overwhelming guilt, welcome the self-hatred, and constant sadness.  Or, he could refuse allowing any of it to get in through the cracks, maintain some sort of stability, which meant his sanity, and then, gamble on the high stakes of hope.  Hope, meaning, the part in finding a way to move forward from all the horrible things committed these past months.  All the people heâd hurt. And above all, Stefan hoped for forgiveness, whether it was to be delivered, or found. Until then, these trembling reflections would be handled without emotion, bottled away.
Yet, this turning point differed in ways from his past.  He felt more aware of the things he once had trouble grasping, and heâd learned a thing or two. Things Stefan were far too ashamed to admit out loud.  However, not enough to deny himself of.  This was a first. The first time Stefan silently admitted to owning his darkest self. Upon facing the truth, the Salvatore vampire had finally begun to accept the ripper was just as much a part of him as any other version.  That being the case, left the distressed vampire at a liberty to decide which side of Stefan Salvatore heâd take on.  How much humanity he could, or would embrace. When the final decision came, he chose to go on the carefree, distraction route.  He chose to act spontaneously, leaving a migraine of the problem he called his âlifeâ, on hold.  Thus, landing him here â sitting shotgun in the car, in company to his new stranger-friend, Hayley.
"Iâve done it before.â  Stefanâs mood continued to swing from one to the other, now displayed in his dry, apathetic tone. Part of it was more than likely due to the triggering topic.  âIâve gone back a couple times, too. And get this, my house, and things?  Very well behaved, for the inanimate. Usually canât get anywhere on their own.â The male brightened via hints of sarcasm. Though heâd made the decision in going the adventurous path, it wasnât enough to sustain him.  It was the many unexpected encounters of the adventure which he needed in order for this to work as a coping distraction. Stefan needed to feed off of external stimulation.  Long enough so that he reached a point where unpredictable chaos found him first. Thus far, he had been on a limit to this one act of impulse; namely being, the ongoing car ride. So, he quickly decided it worthwhile to unravel the enigma of Hayley. âHow `bout you?â Redirecting the spotlight unto her.  âEver go on a long off-the-grid vacation?  Where you avoid responsibilities, go day to day meeting all these wild people, and without any means of directionââ
Despite his response consisting of more than one word, which was what sheâd initially expected; even she understood sheâd ventured into unpleasant conversational grounds. Though living up to the Hayley Marshall persona as always, she couldn't quite restrain herself from prolonging the topic for even the shortest of durations. Regardless, in a made attempt to prove her appreciation to him for not being absolutely awkward, her lips rose to portray a glimpse of a smile in return to the noted sarcasm, but it was soon accompanied by words which passed by hesitationâs halt without effort, âI donât know if Iâd want to return, I think âscrewed upâ doesn't even get close to doing that place justice. A little too... creeper central-esque, if you ask me.â
She seized the hint to avert from the current conversational topic fast enough, though the spotlight being directed in her direction wasn't exactly the best way to soothe her uneasiness. Though, she didn't contest; especially not when he presented his lengthened description ofâ well, pretty much her life as sheâd known it for years. When oneâs orphaned at twelve, seen the ins and outs of the foster care system; the person comes to appreciate the freedom they have when they decide to up and leave one day. Which was exactly what sheâd done. Traveled the world, or rather wherever she could weasel herself into possession of a bus pass, a borrowed couch, hostelsâ a slightly frowned upon manner of backpacking, surely. But itâd allowed her a rich history, to compensate for the lack of familial significance. It never really balanced it out, however.
"Yeah, for years.â The smile which had turned into a barely uttered laugh was questionable, but heâd hit the nail on the head so precisely that the irony had to escape her somehow, âVacations like that are really easy to get away with when you have little to no responsibilities to hold you back. Iâm one of the lucky ones, I guess.â Vacation and lucky weren't exactly terms sheâd use, but she didn't feel the urge to correct him or herself. Upon releasing some tension from the hands which had been gripping the steering wheel, relaxation was creeping its way back into her senses, âIs this somehow turning into a game of twenty questions, 'Hey, I just met you and this is crazyâ edition?â
(x) It certainly didn't require a genius to point out that the vehicle had surely seen better days, but suppose that would be the case for one that served as a home more often than anything else did. Homeless, no; but hostels and motels alike took more of her financially than she could necessarily maintain on a steady basis, or... at all.. A small amount of wrappers found their reside upon the carâs dashboard, the fabric of the driverâs seat wasn't in the most pristine condition everâ even the radio could definitely use replacement; its receiver being far from optimal; which led the occasional âUgh.â to leave lips and digits to mess with the deviceâs knob in an attempt to improve it.
With the palms of her hands rested upon the leather belonging to the steering wheel before her, slightly torn and roughâ the surface of each digit moved in a repeated tapping motion. Slightly uneasy? Yeah, one could go with that option. More than anything, it simply felt bizarre for someone who seemed to have a life, friends, family; to willingly choose to leave all that behind. But then again, it was a situation quite different from her own, that alone bore proof as to how little right or knowledge she possessed to judge.
But as always, she would speak before she ever truly considered if her words were deemed appropriate for the moment; or perhaps it was all intentional; hesitation was a pesky little thing after all. So in that moment, a turning chin brought her gaze to momentarily fall upon her company, âItâs not that I donât appreciate the company of a... slightly broody looking vampire or anything, butââ A smile appeared only to mitigate her ineptitude, as his name mightâve slipped her mind for a moment, âYou left everything behind back there?â
