I was bored so here are some tacky edits I made of hdm characters in T-shirts and badges
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye. You were bigger than the whole sky
Screaming, crying, throwing up etc.
Lyra: I got sent to prison for being too cool
Roger: no, you got sent to prison for arson and aggravated assault
One thing about the ending to The Amber Spyglass I really came to appreciate over the years was Lyra and Will's promise not to hold any future partners they may have in comparison to what they've lost. Because, considering the circumstances, it would have been so easy to have them vow never to love anyone else ever again. To play into the idea that you only get one great love in your life, and anything or anyone else that comes after is inferior.
We have a pair of kids who were destined to save all worlds across the multiverse, who reignited the very spark of consciousness and free will through the simple act of falling in love, and who are now going to be permanently separated just after they've realised what they share. They're going to return to the bench in their own Oxford to be near each other every midsummer's day for the rest of their lives, they vow to find each other again after they die and become one with the universe, "every atom of me and every atom of you", etc. etc., cue the reader's heart cracking clean in two. A sweeping, once in a lifetime love story.
And yet, Will and Lyra acknowledge that they may love again in their lifetimes. It won't be the same as what they shared, but that doesn't mean it will be worth any less, just that it'll be a different relationship. They'll have their yearly hour at the bench to remember their first love, and they'll still let other people into their hearts and cherish them because, after all they've learned and gone through, they need and deserve to live full and happy lives. But a full and happy life does not have to be limited to one love, important as it was to the people involved. And I think it was wonderful of Pullman to include that idea.
Imagine if you were one of Will's classmates, though. Like, you have this guy in your class, he's kinda quiet, mostly keeps to himself, but he's always seemed nice enough. Then one day he just straight up disappears without a trace, and is gone for about a year. There were rumours going around at first that he may have killed someone, but nobody could confirm it.
Then he comes back, and he's missing two fingers, but won't tell anyone how it happened, and he has a cat. He's never seen without the cat and won't let anyone touch it. You're pretty sure you heard it talk once, but you may be wrong. Much like Marty McFly, he is inexplicably best friends with an ex-Catholic astrophysicist. And now the guy who skipped out on his GSCEs is somehow going to be a doctor and you have no idea how that happened.
i think some of you need to read this
Asriel: You saved me. I owe you my life.
Marisa: No thanks. I’ve seen it and I’m not very impressed.
okay but making mary gay in the show is SUCH a choice I’m so impressed
she’s the serpent. she’s temptation, the cause of the fall, of eve sinning. in the magisterium’s—the church’s—view, she symbolizes evil, the corruption of innocence.
but the point is that they’re wrong.
the point is that the fall was a good thing, and it is her telling her story to these children that heals the entire world. and so having a gay woman and her experience of love be the catalyst for that, maligned as she is by the people in power, just…
AAAAAAAA
you never believe them when they tell you that hdm will end up obliterating you emotionally you just read the books and/or watch the show thinking "hey this looks cool" and now you're crying because its the end and this bear just ate his dead best friend as a symbol of honor, this girl had to leave her literal soul behind to save ghosts from suffering, two of the most high - chemistry asshole parents ever just fell down a hole for eternity to give their kid a future and two preteens who finally understand they're in love just had the literal universe tell them "lmfao u thought" and split them apart forever
but yk it's fine because at least we got to watch a lesbian scientist making friends with wheel elephants and climbing trees while thinking about love and marzipan.
Marisa: Asriel and I have this easy chemistry where we finish each other’s-
Asriel: -sentences
Marisa: Don’t interrupt me.
Mary’s chapters in The Amber Spyglass vs everybody else’s chapters in The Amber Spyglass:
bon appetite
