There’s something about the way that Anto/Brendan says “Are we gonna find this loose-lipped cunt who tipped me off to the Brits or what?” in Say Nothing that’s hot and I think about it a lot
Something tells me they might not make it to the hospital in time! 🫣👀
Remember when we were chatting about Brendan helping during a big medical moment? Well... 👀😥
Also apologies, I was hoping to have the next chapter up by now, I still need to edit it and I'm hoping to do so today 🥹 I'm currently visiting family rn 🇮🇪 while I'm here, I'll write and edit chapters whenever I find little moments to 💕 The idea of leaving b+u down for a few weeks makes me anxious 😂 the emotional attachment is strong!
I was watching ‘In the Land Of Saint and Sinners’ last night on Netflix. Around 50mins in they pan to a family with two daughters on the beach and it reminded me so much of Una and Brendan
Queen I'm coming from wattpad as a reader since January here to tell you that I haven't really been keeping up and only remembered I left off on B+U's wedding (which is foggy in my memory) due to the fact that this girl is officially off the unemployment chart and I haven't been able to dabble into much of my fav fics for such a long time 💔 Free me from the corporate world tbh !
Is there a way I can kindly ask for a bit of a rundown/summary of whats happened so far? Trustttttt I will get to reading soon ❤️
Ah I'm happy you're off the unemployment chart, but I know it's almost bittersweet because it's nice to have an income again but also, where does our time go 😭 (I feel you on working in the corporate world)
Here is a recap/summary of what happened since their wedding:
Their wedding started a little chaotically with Brendan almost running into the Brits but it ended sweetly with lots of dancing.
Shortly after their wedding, there was a meeting at a farm to prep the cars for London.
Una, Dolours and Mar head to London on a ferry with the cars and some of the lads from D-Company. The journey to London goes smoothly except that Una is unwell.
They park the cars in their planned spots, set the timers on the bombs and go their separate ways. Una's plan is to stay with her aunt and cousin who live in Brighton for a week or so after the mission. She tried several times to convince Dolours and Mar to stay with her but they decline, opting to hurry back home on a flight to Dublin.
Una makes it to Brighton but soon discovers that her friends have been caught. Her aunt and cousin learn of her involvement too. She's very upset and feels very guilty that she didn't do more to convince them to stay with her.
She ends up staying in Brighton for a few weeks, to lay low. During those few weeks she's a ball of anxiety, can barely eat, feels sick. Towards the end of her stay, she feels so unwell that she goes to the hospital where she learns she's having a miscarriage.
She's obviously distraught and upset but can't bring herself to tell Brendan on the phone. A few days later she's back home in Belfast. The only other person who knows about the miscarriage is her cousin. Her parents learn of her involvement with the bombings after learning about Dolours and Mar's arrests and question her about it, they are not pleased.
Una tells Brendan about the miscarriage when they return home to their flat. He's shocked but upset too.
After a week or two, Una visit's the sister's mother, she ends up being able to speak to the girls on the phone from prison, which helps her a lot.
They go on a handful of missions together, Una is eager to do more for the cause after what happened with the girls. Brendan gives her a gun (she asked him for one).
B+U go on their honeymoon. They travel to a wee town on the coast and are glad to be away from everything for a weekend. It's also her birthday too, he gives her a little kodak camera as a gift.
They notice more checkpoints around the city and are more cautious about being out and about. Brendan shows Una how to make bombs and they chat more about possible missions and things they could do that could be more impactful for the cause.
One day, Brendan and Gerry are caught by the Brits. Una doesn't find out until later in the day and is very upset. She finds the station they are being held at and the peelers are very unhelpful.
She eventually learns that he's been transferred to Long Kesh along with Gerry. She heads into work and learns that she will be treating a prisoner from Long Kesh in the morning. It turns out to be Brendan who has been badly beaten during his interrogation by the Brits. He ends up collapsing mid exam and other doctors take over from Una as she is upset.
While Brendan is in surgery, Una is questioned at the hospital by a peeler and a Brit. It's a very tense conversation, they inform her that they know of her miscarriage which alarms her. She's called to her supervisor's office and is let go from her job.
Brendan wakes up from surgery and he's fine. She finds it hard to tell him that she's lost her job but he soon finds out. He reassures her things will be fine. His father visits him in hospital and Una meets him, they get along well.
Brendan returns to Long Kesh. For the rest of the summer, Una tries to keep herself busy despite not having a job. One day, she's captured by the Brits and is brought to the station. Just as they start interrogating her, Brendan is brought in and forced to watch and listen. It's a rough moment for them, both are verbally and physically abused. It ends with Una being stripped searched to the point where she's standing naked in the room, surrounded by seveal troops. Brendan almost turns himself in but is stopped. Una's father shows up and is able to take her home after threatening the sergeant.
Una spends the rest of the year visiting brendan in long kesh and trying to move on from their traumatic ordeal. He tells her he plans to escape and needs her help.
Dolours and Marian's trial starts, they are each sentenced to 20 years in prison. They declare that they are going on hunger strike almost immediately.
Around Christmas, the Brits show up at Una's home and she has to flee. She manages to escape and hide in their flat.
After months of preparation and planning, he escapes at the end of January by hiding in a bin lorry that leaves the internment camp. He meets Una on a town outside of Belfast. She sourced a car for them so they won't be recognised. They manage to cross the border and head to Glenbride.
It's a cold winter's night and they end up colliding into a stone wall as they near the cottage. They are both fine but use the first few weeks in Glenbride to recover. They soon buy a new car and Una finds work as a live-in nanny for a wealthy family in Dublin. Brendan finds work with the same family, working on their farm outside the city.
Things go well in Dublin, they are able to live normally under new identities and some changes to their appearance. Una gets along well with the children and family.
Brendan hears from leadership in Belfast and decides to train lads who are new to D-Company. Lads travel down from Belfast every second Sunday and they secretly gather on the farm. He teaches them about weapons, bomb making and tatics. Some weeks, Una teaches women similar things and how to help with the cause too.
They monitor the sister's hunger strike through the media. It gets to very worrying stages but are relieved when they stop their hunger strike.
In the summer, Una discovers that she's pregnant. They are both not surprised and excited about it. Later in the summer, Brendan starts smuggling weapons and ammunition from the docks to the farm, gives them to the lads at training to smuggle back to the border.
In the autumn, Una helps the children go back to school and prepares for the later stages of her pregnancy. One Sunday in October, Brendan comes back from the farm early, stating that they've been caught by the head of the family who appeared on the farm, mid-training session. They are forced to leave immediately.
They leave Dublin. The family report them to the police (saying that brendan and Una have been spotted in Dublin, no other details were given).
They end up heading to Sligo, there's a disagreement or two between them during this time. After staying there for a few days, they end up finding a house to rent in a very remote area of county Donegal, right on the coastline.
Sorry I tried to make it as short as I could without leaving out too much 😅 Thanks so much for reading the fic 💕
Will they have a safe birth for their first child? 👀 They’re awfully isolated if they had a medical emergency…
It's funny you mention this because I'm actually editing part of the birth right now 🫣 and you're right! there's a lot of things they need to take into account for it to go smoothly or if they had a medical emergency. They're so isolated and far away from the hospital and family and they also don't know or trust anybody locally yet 🥺
